Is it full freedom of movement, though? What about off roading? Or just driving around town? Or taking a different route home and such?

Presumably you can alter routes as desired, and manual override would allow for off-roading.

I was going to say people who hate driving and therefore think others shouldnt get to drive themselves (everybody who wants self driving vehicles) will move goalposts and claim the crash would be worse if it was just a human driver.

You people are so predictable.

Technically, a group of rational, reasonable people saying things that are well-substantiated by experiments, statistics, and facts is indeed a predictable outcome, but I'm not sure why you think pointing that out is worth making a post. Seems kind of obvious to me.

Though I don't think anyone's saying the crash would be worse. The lady died. Vehicle-pedestrian crashes don't really get much worse than that unless the driver decides to run over the body a few extra times to make a bigger mess.

WastelandCowboy posted...
Why didn't the human inside the vehicle take control?

As nice as the idea of leaving a human with manual override is, by the time that human realizes that there's a problem that requires action AND that the car isn't taking that action, it's generally going to be too late to do anything. That's compounded by how easy it is to stop paying attention when you aren't actually the one driving, which dramatically reduces reaction time.

It's also very possible that the person just popped out so suddenly that nobody - man or machine - would have been able to stop in time. That does happen sometimes. That's why it's being investigated.

Cake decorating is something I haven't done much of. I did get a set of piping bags for Christmas, which I've used a couple times since then, but anything really fancy is still far beyond me. They did come in really handy for the last batch of cupcakes I made (red velvet with white chocolate cream cheese butter cream), since piping a nice swirl is a whole lot nicer than spreading icing on. That's a very impressive cake, though.

I'd say so. As far as savory stuff goes, I need more experience to develop the intuition needed to adjust spice palettes on the fly, and that means I'm not quite up to heavily deviating from recipes, but I do find that I have a really good eye for recipes that will turn out well, and I can follow them well. When I do cook without a recipe, it tends to turn out well, but those tend to be simpler dishes, seasoning-wise (salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder being the staples).

Now, baking? That's where I'm pretty awesome. I'm not able to make up my own recipes for cakes and the like just yet, because that involves a greater understanding of the underlying chemistry than I've got, but I'm at the point where I'm synthesizing recipes from multiple other recipes to make some pretty wild things, like a chocolate mousse mille-feuille covered in chocolate ganache, or a chocolate tart with a layer of candied clementine slices garnished with candied orange zest. Just last night, I made a basic cherry pie with a storebought chocolate crust and canned filling, then topped it with a bit of ganache and some ground toasted almonds to make a surprisingly gourmet dessert. Baking is definitely my forte, kitchen-wise.

If muslims in the UK dont have to handle purchases of bacon and alcohol at international chain stores, why do christian bakers have to dress a wedding cake for a homosexual wedding ceremony?

Because Christian bakers aren't handling gay people.

Put less absurdly, making a cake for a wedding isn't participating in it. There was a less-publicized case a while back where a photographer refused to photograph a gay wedding on the basis of religious objections, and I actually sympathized with that one, because photographing a wedding is a far more personal, intimate matter. You have to pay close attention to the whole ceremony to capture the good parts. You have to very intently watch the grooms/brides kiss you you can get that shot. The photographer is an active participant in the wedding, and that's going to be a profoundly uncomfortable experience for anyone uncomfortable with homosexuality. As wrong as that homophobia may be, inflicting that kind of discomfort on somebody is also wrong, and isn't going to fix anything.

Making a wedding's cake, however, is only slightly more involved than paying taxes to maintain the road the limo drives on. The baker is not a participant in the ceremony. The only reason they even know it's a gay wedding is because of the names they were asked to put on the cake; even bakers that are present at the reception might otherwise have a hard time figuring out whether a gay couple at said reception is the wedding party or just well-dressed guests. Baking a cake doesn't enable the wedding, it just means they have cake. As such, refusing to bake the cake is nothing more than a petty act of spite; the impotent death throes of a dying class of human that refuses to accept the world we now live in. Discriminatory spite should not be tolerated.

bulbinking posted...
Doesnt that make you mad getting judged? You should sue them for refusing you service that goes against their religious teachings!

Ah, but here's the thing: They aren't refusing service. They're refusing work. They aren't discriminating against people.

If you go to an alcohol-serving establishment and the only staff on at the time are Muslims who refuse to serve alcohol, you would indeed have a legitimate gripe with the establishment, because they've failed to provide the advertised service to you (by ensuring that there's somebody working who can serve alcohol). You wouldn't have grounds for a discrimination lawsuit, obviously (you weren't discriminated against), but in extreme cases you might be able to manage a false advertising one.

Now, if it were a case where you ordered alcohol with your meal in a restaurant, and the Muslim chef refused to prepare the meal you ordered because you were drinking, that'd be discrimination. Though even then it's not really comparable because the chef would probably just be fired, given that it's not the business owner making the decision to discriminate. It's not really an analogous situation.

We have successfully, all but eliminated diseases that were once very devastating to mankind.
It's hard to believe there are human beings out there who want any more proof than that, that vaccinations work, and are awesome.

The problem is twofold, really:

-Because we've almost completely eliminated these diseases, they're no longer visible enough to be considered credible risks by many people. This means more visible side effects (real or hypothetical) are given more weight in the risk assessment than they actually should be
-The pharmaceutical industry has a long history of lying through its teeth to get people to pay for stuff that's unnecessary and/or does more harm than good, which has undermined people's trust in medicine

It's understandable that people are skeptical. Still wrong, but it's important to understand why they're wrong instead of just berating them for being idiots (since then they just keep being wrong).

This strikes me as being a lot like video game testing, in that it superficially looks like a good deal (get paid to play video games/masturbate all day), but the reality is that most of your time is going to be spent playing/boning dysfunctional ones. "Ow, this one hurts," isn't going to be met with "okay, we'll get a new one," it's going to be met with "try a different angle," "try some more lube," "see if this minor adjustment will help," and "why aren't you hard anymore?" That last one is probably why porn star experience is an asset, since they're accustomed to keeping it up despite being uncomfortable and for extended periods of time.

thats a laugh considering most liberal crybaby sallies call for an "assault weapon ban" when handguns kill way more people.

Even when correcting for the numbers of each that are in circulation? Or for the numbers of each that end up used in crimes (particularly mass shootings, since that tends to be the focus of such discussions)? I don't actually know; I'm curious if you (or anyone else) has stats on the matter.

what even is an assault weapon

A buzzword that activists have latched onto without actually taking the time to define it, but generally it's used to refer to anything that is more suited to military engagements than any civilian purpose. Large magazines, anything resembling automatic fire (including a number that do call for bans on automatic weaponry, seemingly not realizing that automatic weapons are already illegal), that sort of thing.

It's not charity. It's rewarding and encouraging them to come.

That reward would be the actual award. A millionaire is not going to be more likely to come be recognized for their accomplishments if they get a year of free bananas out of it. They can very comfortably afford their own bananas.

But if you are giving away a years worth of fruit for free,

you know that everything in those bags are paid for, right?

By somebody who then chose to give them away for free. It's an act of charity toward people who have no need of charity, which is just wasteful.
