The others, while good-great in various respects, all still share that overly sterile/artificial look. Movies just look horrible now in general, and that is readily apparent in horror films where the look is so often vital to the effectiveness of the film. trappedunderice posted... What I hate is jump scares, they get me almost everytime but damn I want some horror in my horror films. For example, John Carpenter's The Thing was pure horror in the fact that the creature looked fucked up and the thought of not knowing who the Thing was is incredible. Another example is Heavy Metals B-17 scene with the zombie crew. The Thing is like the perfect example of how to instill paranoia and claustrophobia/isolation/helplessness in the viewer.
