The norms are almost wholly the construction of liberals, and much of the liberal objection to Trump is about his violation of those norms. Liberals aren't much for subversion; you're thinking of progressives and leftists.

Alternatively, it's possible that some norms are held in higher regard than others.

I don't think the distinction is that clear-cut. Progressives and cultural leftists merely take the same impulses into overdrive.

Go to an art museum in a major city, and see how many times you can count descriptions of modern art using terms like "radical" or "subversive". These exhibits are seen by millions, and I really doubt the intended audiences are merely the far left. The "empowerment" ideology in opposition to traditional norms is mainstream.

Not all norms. A lot of people on the left want to reject what they see as Christian, white, and conservative norms.

Exactly, but they applaud norm-breaking almost as a good in itself. They break golden calves out of pleasure. Now Trump does the same to theirs. Where's the applause?

How often do you read that some movie star or pop culture figure has broken some yet another norm of gender, sexuality, or race to uproarious applause? "Subversive", "norm-breaker", "iconoclast", are but a few terms of praise bestowed on them as they crush the values of Middle America.

But who in America today is as truly and deeply a destroyer of norms as Donald J. Trump? See how many flee in the face of true subversion!

Perhaps some of our norms may have had value after all?

I forgot how many religions have "gay people should not be allowed to adopt" as a major tenant of their beliefs.

Fuck religion, all it does is hurt people.

brb, gonna shut down all the homeless shelters and soup kitchens in town since they're just hurting people

now you're thinking like a republican!

If withdrawing public funding causes your charity to roll over and die, then something was fundamentally flawed with your charity this whole time.

I'm not sure what public funding withdrawing and charities dying has to do with most of them being religious but okay.

People would rather charities die and the weak suffer, than admit that it's mostly religious people doing this type of work.

Apparently Yale Law students don't think Yale Law School should be proud of yet another of its alumni going to the Supreme Court.

Apparently, the school is supposed to oppose a Republican president with a Republican Congres from selecting a Republican judge, who happened to go to Yale, even though it has no power or ability to change any of that.

People dont say bless you out of respect, they say it cause they were taught to as kids and now its ingrained. The reason youre mad she doesnt say it? Youre expecting to be shown respect for something your body does involuntarily, because youre never shown respect any other way.

It's a quirk of our culture. What is so bad about maintaining that?

Do you people want to live in a bland world where we can't interact with each other in any way except the literal, or whatever some cultural tsar proscribes for you?

Even worse are the ones who get mad that you didn't thank them for saying it. As if they think they're actually saving your soul by saying it, and you're an ungrateful shit for not appreciating that.

It's a common courtesy that shows you respect the other person.

Literally no one thinks you are calling upon God to bless that person for having a nose fart. What is so bad about maintaining a quirk of our culture??

When people are angry or drunk they usually say what they really think, even if its blunt or somewhat needlessly hurtful. Women generally understand how this works but guys might sweep it under the rug and act like it doesnt hold as much weight as it really does. Even if, as in this case, theyre the ones who do it. She probably gave you a lot of chances to change and really did like you.

I didn't deny that those feelings had some root. Once I was calmer, I tried to explain exactly what I meant, and apologized a lot for the words I used.

But yeah I probably screwed this up for myself.

Don't remember exactly how the argument came about, but I said something to the effect that I give her a ton of emotional support and she gives nothing to the relationship.

I always backtrack from the language I use when I'm angry, but she's had enough.

Damn yo. If what you said is true well then you're better off. If not, well then you need to work on you.

I think it's true to an extent. She's fairly needy, while I'm pretty stoic.

But it was wrong for me to say she doesn't give me anything. I was just lashing out in anger, which I tend to do. I pleaded with her to let me take some time to work on communication so we can avoid future arguments, but she basically doesn't think she can go on.
