Would love to hear the tipz so first of all, as ppl say, 3 months salary is BS. buy what you can afford, what you're willing to pay, etc. first thing to know, and this prob sounds obvious, is that the diamond & the ring (setting) are potentially separate purchases, and probably the most bang for your buck way is to find a diamond dealer for the diamond and get the ring from a jeweler, who will set the diamond. this is kind of a pain though, and for me i ended up buying both the diamond & setting from a jeweler. for the ring, most popular & common setting is white gold, and these are pretty cheap depending on what kind of band you like. i ended up getting my fiancee (now wife) a platinum band because im kind of into jewelry and like how platinum ages, but white gold is the most common and if i had to do it again i'd probably get white gold for the band in order to have more money towards the diamond. now for the diamond. there are four criteria that a diamond is judged on: color, cut, clarity, and carat. diamonds have the 4 c's rated by a group called GIA, the Gemological Institute of America. NEVER buy a non-GIA certified diamond, because a GIA cert is pretty much the only way you're guaranteeing the value of your diamond. This is important if you ever sell it, for insurance purposes, etc. now back to the 4 c's. most people only know carat, which is the weight of the diamond. a lot of people have this mentality that your diamond has to be over 1 carat, but that's bullshit. carat is one of the biggest factors for how the price increases on a diamond; the difference between .95 carat and 1 carat could be a couple hundred dollars, even though there's no possible way you or your girlfriend will ever be able to discern .05 of a carat. this is a good place to save IMO if your gf isn't status-y. cut is how the diamond is shaped. most people like round cut diamonds but it depends on the taste of your gf. the GIA cert will give a quality to the diamond based on how precisely it's cut. this is something you can eyeball, and an "excellent" cut isn't a huge price hike so it's nbd. color is how clear the diamond is, the clearer the better. this is on a scale of D to Z, D being completely colorless and Z being a gross yellow color. Clarity is the measure of little imperfections inside the diamond. These are called inclusions; a flawless diamond will have nothing in it, but a more imperfect one will have little specs in it. When you go to the jeweler, they'll give you a little glass to look through (a loop) and you'll use this to view the inside of the diamond and look at the imperfections. the key here is to kind of find a balance of the 4 c's that works with your budget. for example, maybe you or your gf would like a higher quality diamond but don't care how big it is, or maybe you guys care more about the size of a diamond and can deal with not as clear of a color or the presence of a few tiny inclusions. honestly my best advice here is to not stress over color, clarity, etc. don't worry about scores all that much. if it looks good it looks good, and if you're happy with how it looks, it fits your budget, etc, then pull the trigger and dont worry about what the score is on some piece of paper. lmk if you need more info, i have more shit i can probably get into Thank you so much for this, it will definitely be helpful.
