Japanese parents will always respond negatively to children who look different unless the particular area has a relatively high concentration of foreigners (and even then, they still might).

The reason is fear of the different and unknown. When Japanese people see someone who doesn't look Japanese, they assume they're foreign. Even if you are a native-born Japanese citizen. As a result, they assume you can't speak Japanese and, more critically, can't understand and follow Japanese rules.

This is because homogeneous societies tend to view their system as special and fundamentally incomprehensible to outsiders. The most we can be expected to do is imitate it. That's not to say that some foreigners don't cause problems, but the issues arise even if we don't.

The unfortunate reality is that a lot of Japanese people just don't get it. They don't get why their behavior needlessly harms others, and attempts to bring it up means you're rocking the boat. And boat rocking is unacceptable, so they are even less likely to listen.

Japan has crafted a society that is almost miraculously resistant to change in key areas.

I'm sure there's a correlation, but they aren't the same thing.

For one, loli is not necessarily a sexual attraction whereas pedophilia is.

Second, pedophilia is exclusively the sexual attraction to prepubescent children. Loli, on the other hand, can contain various conflicting and/or multifaceted depictions, since the subjects are both not real and designed to target fantasies instead of reality.

I mean I feel the same about straight characters too, I want them well-written. I'm not sure what you mean by dog whistle but I don't think I'm asking for much for just a good narrative, straight or gay. :/

Also Corn go plow a gay field or something, idk

The reason it's considered a dog whistle by some is that it's not really pertinent to the conversation. Characters being well-written is kind of a general hope that everyone should have for all the characters in their media of choice. So making that a specific request when it comes to LGBT characters sounds suspect. After all, regardless of whether the characters are well-written or not, there's no problem with having LGBT characters in a game or any other kind of media. No need to specifically say you're okay with it only on the grounds that they be well-written.

For many people, they often feel some great "loss of status," or that they've "lost their place in society." It goes back to what Darkman said about being able to live with something. And having one's entire social position torn out from under them can very quickly cause serious mental distress and become something the victim "cannot live with."

It's a similar reason to why people who are bullied can be susceptible to suicidal thoughts. It can come with the sensation that you have no place among your peers (who make up your immediate "society").

Is that decided upon in the lore? Or was that just the standard/previous record to successfully get from points A to B?

So how did Life is Strange "get away with it"?

Market penetration is a factor, true. Criticism often comes with mainstream attention. But more to my point, it doesn't matter why fans like the games. It matters how they are billed and presented to consumers. QD bills itself as an interactive narrative game. AA bills itself as a detective puzzle game.

Right, but it's a matter of presentation. In AA, it's presented like you're solving a puzzle. That's what the game is about, and good storytelling helps prop it up. QD games, on the other hand, are primarily about performing the narrative which happens to include mysteries.

And it's the history of visual novels that makes Japan more receptive to these sorts of games. Whereas in other countries there's still a strong expectation of "challenge." If that challenge doesn't seem to be there, it "doesn't count" in their minds.
