ElatedVenusaur 03/18/18 9:54:12 AM #27 | It begins? |
Topic | I hope Trump fires Mueller. |
ElatedVenusaur 03/18/18 9:52:45 AM #7 | Doom_Art posted... tbh I'm not confident the GOP would put any consequences on Trump for it This. Hopefully Mueller has some kind of kill-switch in place though. |
Topic | Imagine if the US or UK declared itself "a nation for white people" |
ElatedVenusaur 03/17/18 6:01:24 PM #27 | The cruel irony is that both the modern Israelis and Palestinians are descendants of the ancient Israelites. The former are descended from those who left(either by choice or exile) and the latter those who stayed and eventually converted to Islam. There's also the Versailles Treaty dimension to the issue too, because that thing messed up everything it touched on, but I digress. This is a terrible development and represents a further degradation of modern Israel. |
Topic | What's there to do in Idaho? |
ElatedVenusaur 03/17/18 5:49:01 PM #6 | https://visitidaho.org/ Probably every state has one of these. Idaho probably can't afford to advertise, or Michigan just really wants New Englanders like me to visit. |
Topic | Funimation asks Nintendo on Twitter when Goku will join Smash. |
ElatedVenusaur 03/17/18 5:27:42 PM #83 | Goku in Smash would definitely own. It's also probably more likely than playable Ridley. |
Topic | Trump's lawyer calls for Rosenstein to end Mueller probe |
ElatedVenusaur 03/17/18 5:25:47 PM #21 | It wouldn't surprise me if he did, honestly. Mueller's been following the trail, and is probably well within his immediate family(Don Jr. and Jared Kushner are probably dead-to-rights). He's getting increasingly desperate(and is also an idiot with idiot lawyers), so he's probably going to end up Saturday Night Massacre-ing it, except it will be even dumber and more transparent than when Nixon tried it. The likes of Jeff Flake and Ben Sasse will be livid, but nothing will happen until after mid-terms. Even then, there probably won't be enough votes to convict in the Senate. |
Topic | Jeff Sessions fired Andrew McCabe |
ElatedVenusaur 03/16/18 11:15:10 PM #17 | I take a certain grim pleasure in seeing the president the FBI intentionally helped elect screw them over as hard as the rest of us. With that said: https://twitter.com/abcpolitics/status/974833862462394370 Sounds like McCabe plans on going scorched-earth on Trump. |
Topic | Republican Jeff Flake says republicans might not deserve to lead |
ElatedVenusaur 03/16/18 6:47:31 PM #3 | Does anyone like Jeff Flake? |
Topic | Was Bill Clinton a good president IYO? |
ElatedVenusaur 03/16/18 1:39:21 PM #18 | Nope. Gutting welfare was a terrible mistake, and then there's everything else. We've had a run of mediocre-to-poor-to-terrible presidents of late. |
Topic | James Mattis linked to massive corporate fraud |
ElatedVenusaur 03/16/18 12:16:58 PM #45 | This is troubling, but there's no evidence to suggest it was anything more than a lapse in judgment. We all make mistakes. |
Topic | Are you afraid of death? |
ElatedVenusaur 03/13/18 11:06:48 PM #5 | I have far too much left to do to go and die now. So yeah, it's scary to think about. |
Topic | Holy shit; democrat leading the PA special election at ~53%! |
ElatedVenusaur 03/13/18 11:05:13 PM #165 | 0AbsoluteZero0 posted... Keep in mind that these PA districts were so laughably gerrymandered in favor of Republicans that the PA Supreme Court declared the district map unconstitutional. The new districts drawn by the court will be used in November and are going to be much more equitable. This district won't even exist in November, IIRC. Looks like Lamb is going to pull it out though. |
Topic | Holy shit; democrat leading the PA special election at ~53%! |
ElatedVenusaur 03/13/18 10:55:45 PM #138 | Capn Circus posted... Looks like Lamb is only ahead by 95 votes, according to CNN. It doesn't get much closer than that. Looks like there are still some votes left in Westmoreland. Razor-thin margin here. |
Topic | Holy shit; democrat leading the PA special election at ~53%! |
ElatedVenusaur 03/13/18 8:38:34 PM #10 | Don't go counting chickens before they hatch. This is probably going to be close, and it's much too soon to say who has won. |
Topic | GOP abandons tax cut messaging in PA special election |
ElatedVenusaur 03/13/18 1:44:54 PM #4 | Ex-Kefiroth posted... It's gonna be a close one. Yeah, definitely, this is a really red district, the GOP's struggles notwithstanding. We'll find out real soon though, so there's that. |
Topic | I'm starting to think that Trump is showing specific favoritism towards Russia. |
ElatedVenusaur 03/13/18 1:42:24 PM #24 | UnholyMudcrab posted... Steve Nick posted...UnholyMudcrab posted...Steve Nick posted... Guess what: the only thing that can force Trump to carry out his duties is Congress, so this argument is purely academic. The president isn't supposed to ignore Congress, but he can if Congress lets him get away it(which this Congress will). |
Topic | How is cryptocurrency useful |
ElatedVenusaur 03/13/18 1:17:49 PM #17 | It's great for illegal stuff. |
Topic | Ok, somebody tell me why this Trump-Stormy Daniels thing is a thing |
ElatedVenusaur 03/11/18 6:01:57 PM #21 | It's a distraction that gets air time because it's a sex scandal, and sex sells. And it can easily be reduced to a sound-bite and gossiped about endlessly. It's much better filler than talking about our gun control crisis, tariffs, Dreamers, or anything else that actually matters. |
Topic | Best Rick and Morty episode |
ElatedVenusaur 03/11/18 12:29:50 PM #9 | Something Ricked This Way Comes(already mentioned), Rest and Ricklaxation(the opening sequence alone makes it great), and Auto-Erotic Assimilation(Unity!) |

ElatedVenusaur 03/11/18 11:47:38 AM #19 | The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky |
Topic | American man arrested in Japan for severed woman's head found in suitcase |
ElatedVenusaur 03/09/18 9:12:20 PM #20 | IHeartRadiation posted... There's very few reasons to take someone's head with you. Yeah, having a severed head in your luggage is really damning. Like, only slightly less damning than a videotape of you actually severing aforementioned head. The Japanese justice system is going to ream him and we should let it. |
Topic | Jarvis Landry is a fucking Browns player now |
ElatedVenusaur 03/09/18 7:51:30 PM #7 | Josh Gordon/Jarvis Landy/Corey Coleman looks like a pretty good receiving corp on paper. Certainly better than any Tyrod Taylor has thrown to in the past two years. As a Bills fan, I'm happy Tyrod is going somewhere where I can still root for him. He may not be a world-beater, but he's a good quarterback and got a raw deal here. Hopefully we use all these draft picks we've been stockpiling to get a good quarterback, because I'll probably have an aneurysm if Sean McDermott tries to tell me Nathan Peterman gives us the best chance to win(again!) |
Topic | People are speculating a soft reboot for Pokemon, full 3D remake of Kanto |
ElatedVenusaur 03/08/18 3:42:55 PM #24 | It would be cool if it was Kanto+(think what BW2 did with Unova) and included both the Sevii Islands and Johto. Set it after USUM, have at least 300 or so pokemon obtainable pre-post game, have Kanto and Johto forms, etc. You could even have Gladion and Team Rainbow Rocket show up, and do something like Basically, I'm down if they want to blend the old with the new and make an expanded region full of life. I'm not down for porting FR/LG and cludgy nonsense like Golbat not being able to evolve until you get the National Dex. |
Topic | I just watched Thor Ragnarok. Why did ppl love it so much? (Spoilers) |
ElatedVenusaur 03/08/18 11:40:30 AM #34 | Mufflnz0rz posted... Pretty sure this was the opposite of "generic" as far as MCU films go Yeah, what struck me with Ragnarok is that it's funny. Really, genuinely, funny, without feeling forced. The entire sequence with Dr. Strange is a great example. Also Thor running into the Hulk the first time, or Jeff Goldblum(all of the Jeff Goldblum). Apparently, a lot of the dialogue was ad-libbed, and it worked beautifully. If anything, I'd say the movie suffers a bit from Hela being a pretty generic antagonist, Cate Blanchett's performance notwithstanding. |
Topic | Congress has a small chance to stop Trump's disastrous tariff plan |
ElatedVenusaur 03/07/18 7:53:08 PM #7 | I'm sure Jeff Flake and Mark Sanford are deeply concerned. Just buckle up and enjoy the entirely senseless and damaging trade war. |
Topic | Super Bowl Ring player being let go from the Seahawks |
ElatedVenusaur 03/07/18 2:12:48 PM #5 | The defense isn't what it used to be. Age is catching up to some of them, and the salary cap is bearing down on them too, IIRC. Good time for the Seahawks to reload. |
Topic | Apparently Kirby has had enough of Whispy Woods' shit |
ElatedVenusaur 03/07/18 1:23:29 PM #2 | Real talk: that dumb tree is hella dull. Unless you have a power, then you kill him in five seconds. |
Topic | Anyone else called off work cause of the Winter Storm? |
ElatedVenusaur 03/07/18 1:19:50 PM #40 | Just picking up here in Southern Connecticut. Called out anyway: I was supposed to close, but screw that. Regional always drags its feet on closing stores. |
Topic | Suggest some good fantasy/science fiction books to get. |
ElatedVenusaur 03/07/18 11:00:11 AM #21 | I can recommend anything by Isaac Asimov. There are collections of short stories, the Foundation trilogy, and many more things I haven't read. |
Topic | Everyone who voted for Hitler is a terrible person |
ElatedVenusaur 03/05/18 11:16:46 PM #4 | Nomadic View posted... They supported socialist ideologies that he was peddling. It's more that Hitler was blaming minorities, leftists and non-Germans for the country's problems while the SPD and KPD mostly fought each other and the conservatives chose to deliberately enable Hitler by making him Chancellor. The liberals twiddled their thumbs, per usual. |
Topic | Former Trump aide plans to go on live TV and rip up grand jury summons |
ElatedVenusaur 03/05/18 11:13:30 PM #192 | Ruvan22 posted... Serious question from somebody that doesn't know a lot of legal details - can Trump issue a preemptive pardon? Something that would give him immunity from having the subpoena? I'm not a legal expert, but I believe a pardon requires there to have been a crime to be issued. Furthermore, were Trump to pre-emptively pardon anyone Mueller has his hooks in, they would be unable to invoke the 5th to get out of testifying about their dealings(as they have already admitted guilt and been absolved of the consequences by accepting a presidential pardon), meaning they could be held in contempt if they refused to cooperate. And, of course, Trump can only pardon federal crimes: if one of the state attorney generals involved charged some one with something, Trump couldn't save them. |
Topic | Which novels and authors are your favorite? |
ElatedVenusaur 03/04/18 11:14:36 AM #5 | I'm reading The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky right now. Recently, I've read a collection of Norse myths compiled by Neil Gaiman, A Shattered Peace by David Andelman(about the Versailles Peace Conference), and Close to Home, a materialist analysis of women's oppression by French feminist Christine Delphy. |

ElatedVenusaur 03/02/18 11:08:07 AM #11 | s0nicfan posted... ElatedVenusaur posted...Not all Islamic sects were/are against the depiction of Muhammad. The Mughals, for example, were very fond of depicting him. Not exactly, but the Ottomans ended up favoring more conservative schools in part to emphasize their status as the Caliphate, and never you Syrians, Kurds, Mesopotamians, Egyptians, etc. mind that the Turks are running the show. And, of course, the most influential sect in modern (Sunni) Islam is Saudi Wahabbism, which makes most 7th-century religions look forward-thinking. |

Topic | Dear Mr. President. There are too many states nowadays. Please eliminate three. |
ElatedVenusaur 03/01/18 11:34:35 PM #9 | Ok, we'll merge the Dakotas, because why not? Fold Idaho into Montana(we'll call it Montandaho), and partition Wyoming. Then let us merge Alabama and Mississippi, just so we can get Puerto Rico in. That probably won't actually make people care about it like they should though, but it's worth it shot. |

ElatedVenusaur 03/01/18 11:19:15 PM #15 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huN376F3QTg&t=45s For those who don't remember. These games never scared me much, but the Forest Temple definitely has an eerie vibe to it. |
Topic | Trump admin has double the turnover rate of any previous admin. Triple Obama's |
ElatedVenusaur 03/01/18 3:14:18 PM #5 | It's funny, but the turnover stories are little more than chaff compared to his judicial appointments and other malfeasance. |
Topic | Turkey slipping on women's rights. Now lowest of developed nations w.r.t work |
ElatedVenusaur 03/01/18 10:10:54 AM #20 | Authoritarianism is on the rise once again. Liberal democracy has brought a crisis upon itself, and it will be we who suffer for it. |
Topic | why do republicans believe so many conspiracy theories? |
ElatedVenusaur 02/24/18 10:53:10 AM #11 | Reality is hard on them, and their ideology is driven by fear and suspicion. |
Topic | It seems more cops were outside while the guy was shooting. |
ElatedVenusaur 02/23/18 10:59:22 PM #13 | If cops won't do their jobs, how can you expect people without training to? It's insane. The solution is to do as much as possible to remove guns from the equation, just like other countries have (successfully!) done. |
Topic | Stellaris 2.0 / Apocalypse hype! Releases Feb 22, TOMORROW |
ElatedVenusaur 02/22/18 3:45:56 PM #14 | Mikablu posted... I care. I just don't have the money to get the expansion just yet. You've got Cherryh though! My first 2.0 game is still in its early stages. I border some marauders and Hegemonic Imperialists(they're Egalitarians like my Paxalus though, so relations aren't bad. Yet.) The entire sector is infested with amoebas, which complicates the building of good borders. I've lost two scientists to aforementioned marauders and the Dimensional Horror. I'm going to have Destroyers soon though, so that should take care of the amoeba problem. Haven't met anyone else yet, but the new border system leaves me constantly torn on where to build outposts. |
Topic | Progressives shout 'burn her' and threaten violence against NRA speaker |
ElatedVenusaur 02/22/18 3:40:04 PM #122 | I don't feel sorry for her one bit. That's what Dana Loesch went there to do. To incite anger against herself and the NRA, to attempt to make villains out the victims of a mass shooting that was abetted by the NRA's own political activities, so that they themselves could play the victim. So that they could muddy the waters. For that is all they and people like Dana Loesch ever do. Demonize the victims and the aggrieved. |

Also, way back when, just after Utopia, they did a Twitter poll on what the next major patch/expansion should focus on, between War, Diplomacy, and Body Pillows. War won. Perhaps Diplomacy is next? |
