He uses lobsters in particular because they have a nervous system that is very easy to understand and map out, in addition to having independently evolved social behavior. He uses the nervous system as a way to express how psychology is rooted in biology and that there are proximal causes underlying the ultimate causes of our behavior and mood. So did people just act as though the flaw of linearity was worse than it actually was?
