All right, I watched the second episode of the Persona 5 anime. I'm really digging this OP! ED, not so much. The aesthetics and presentation are pretty good, although not always the best. They did an All-Out Attack complete with the Joker finishing pose, but it was just a plain red background instead of his normal one. The next episode previews are designed to look like the post-battle victory screen though, so that's really cool.

Also, I think I already like the anime version of Ryuji better than the game one, although Joker actually being able to communicate with him probably helps. Joker's characterization is pretty great so far, too. He's a little more self-serious than anime Narukami was, at least so far, but he's got a sense of style and knows it, so he's not afraid to show it off.

I also finished season 9 of Frasier! Down to the last two seasons now!

I like the fact that the only reason Edgeworth jots down information about the passionflowers is so he can remember the name (further evidence that he's not great at remembering the names of non-human things).

also pretty sure the explanation of where the name came from is the only reference to Christianity in the series (and probably to any real organized religion at all)

All right, I'm finished with the last Hyouka book, although apparently there's a separate short story and some drama CDs that they've also translated, so I'll read those, too. The last story in the sixth book was, fittingly enough since we discussed this quite a bit recently, a very Yukiko-esque character arc for Chitanda, although one that's from a different perspective that veers in a different direction. Chitanda's circumstances as a wealthy and noble heiress to a longstanding household estate aren't really something any of us can relate to on a personal level (or at least I assume so). That's part of what makes her plight interesting though. We see it from Hotaro's perspective, which is a point of view most of us understand since he's just your average dude (well not entirely but you know what I mean).

Obviously I can't say too much since it'd be spoilers and I'm pretty sure no one here has read it so there'd be no point in elaborating anyway, but I was impressed with the level of sympathy and kindness Hotaro showed toward Chitanda's situation, all things considered. The books never call it love and almost seem to go out of their way to avoid presenting them in any sort of romantic situation (the anime is a little more overt in that regard but thankfully never too much so), but I've said it before about Hotaro and Chitanda: Their relationship is clearly special without having to give it some "official" designation.

The way the story ends is also left rather vague, so I guess it's left up to the reader's interpretation as to what ends up happening. I think it leans toward one outcome over the other, but both possibilities are viable, so that's neat. I certainly hope that's not where the series ends because there's still room for more to be told if the author wants to continue it. Apparently, this separate short story was written only six months ago, so I guess that means there's the chance of still more to come.

In Trails the 3rd news, I'm guessing Chapter 6 is going to take up a pretty huge chunk of time just by looking at all the monument slots it takes up on the overhead map thing. I finished Kloe's monochrome school thing. Felt like I was in Timeless River in KHII for a minute there! I figured out the trick to the place pretty quickly, although Kevin listed it in the journal as well for good measure! We had to do a couple of boss fights against the Ravens and then against Philip, which was pretty awesome. It wasn't a hard fight by any means, but it was just a cool experience, especially since he had a unique S-Craft just for this battle.

I did the Moon Door about the Mercia Orphanage children. That was kind of sweet and cute, all the while maintaining the mystery of whether what happened to Mary was a dream or reality! Then I did the Maybelle/Lila Star Door, which was pretty excellent, especially once Anelace entered the picture to play private investigator. Maybelle and Lila have always been two of the best minor NPCs, so it was cool for them to get a little episode of their own, especially since it was lighthearted most of the way through and kinda touching at the end.

Speaking of Anelace, she's the required party member for the next section, called the House of Mirrors. They said I had to bring the sword-wielding gal, and my actual first thought was Julia, but everyone was sure it was Anelace, so I figure the game isn't going to deliberately try to mislead me here! Apparently, it's the Ouroboros Lakeside Base...only mirrored. It's a little on the nose, but fine. It'll have to wait until tomorrow though!

Started Chapter 6 in Trails the 3rd. Now we're outside of Grancel in the Erbe Scenic Route, huh. All those stone monuments that are there in real life are acting like the Doors do elsewhere in Phantasma. Looks like I need Kloe for this first one, which is convenient since she's already in my party! I've also switched to Renne's Remote Ability over Josette's because the hefty EXP boost is worth the small loss in sepith gain and item drop rate, especially now that I have the Divine Eye gem, which combines Eagle Eye, Information, Fortune, and Sepith Vein all into one, along with Scent, which is lame, but I've already discovered that Haze overrides it, so that's good.

And I got that Divine Eye quartz by doing the Olivier/Mueller Star Door, which was pretty great. The tension between Olivier and the Chancellor (pretty neat that we got to meet this guy finally) was excellent. And hey, it's Lechter again! Seems he's been a spy for the Chancellor for quite some time, even when he was a student at Jenis. I feel like this still isn't the last we've seen of him, even if it means he doesn't show up again until the Cold Steel games or something. I can see why they shifted the scene to Erebonia for Cold Steel, too. That place is rife with political intrigue from the looks of it.

I don't think there's an archetype that hasn't been done well or badly before.

Except maybe kids, they're always bad.

Yeah, but I'm talking about general success rate here. Some archetypes have been done well more often than others. Of course, on the same note, if you do an archetype well that's usually not good, that might be the most impressive thing, like Nanako being a great kid character.

Renne doesn't fit the bill on any of those though.

de Killer is the biggest source of dark humor and the greatest comedic bit in the series

he's also great at absolute deadpan humor

so yes 2-4 is JFA's funniest case

1-4 is also PW1's funniest case

I'll have to wait until after AJ, DD, and SoJ to rule on those, but I'd go ahead and venture a guess that 6-5 is the funniest SoJ case. It might be 5-3 for DD though.

that's the easy part out of the way

the long haul starts next

Gumshoe trending in the right direction there to hold on to #2 in AAI1's number of lines but I think that's probably going to be his biggest segment since he's actually your partner for the investigation here. I think he's quite a bit less involved from here on out. Franziska is pretty big during Middle since she's the only one who joins Edgeworth in any part of the Allebahst investigation.

1-5 definitely tries to be funny but usually fails. 3-5 trial day 2 has plenty of humor just from Godot alone. 3-5 is also peak Gumshoe on both days in terms of comedy.

4-4 does have Brushel, this is true. Dude is hilarious. Valant has his moments as well. You've also got Misham going Psycholock, but that's about it. Most of 4-4 day 2 is pretty humorless. It's probably the most "serious mode" Phoenix ever gets (and he's investigating alone the entire time, which takes away a lot of opportunities for humorous interactions).

5-5 has its moments with Ponco, Blackquill, and even the Phantom. 6-5 day 2 has plenty of hilarious moments like Ga'ran declaring you guilty just for the heck of it and rewriting laws in the middle of court, and Amara's testimony in general has humor sprinkled throughout the whole thing. The one-liners don't stick out as much in an epic case since the drama is always the most memorable aspect there, but they are certainly always there. They just don't have as many comedic setpieces. They're usually relegated to one-liners and stuff, but they're always there.

it requires change in the sense that yes it's obviously not those exact words but you can pronounce the name as is and understand the pun

I like it better as a pun because it's simple. I never said Jacques Portsman was a bad pun either. I just said I didn't "get it" at first because I didn't pronounce the name properly, and you for some strange reason keep trying to explain to me why it's a visual pun despite that. Like, if it was visual, then there wouldn't have been any issue of me getting it wrong because of pronunciation. The Anglicization of the name is, in fact, a problem with pronunciation.

NeoElfboy posted...
E1-5 is one of the funniest cases in the series after the rest of AAI isn't that funny. Not what I would have expected for a final case but welcome nonetheless.

epic cases often have the very best comedic writing so I'm not sure why you wouldn't have expected this

even so E1-5 is one of the weaker epic cases in terms of comedy

only E2-5 is worse but I'd probably blame that on the fan translation and the fact that AAI2 is often a little too self-serious in general

actually 4-4 also might be worse because that case takes itself pretty seriously too
