I used to watch late night Cinemax with my father sleeping in the same room or in another room. Volume muted, fingers laying on the recall and mute buttons just in case. I really risked it there <_<

There were also times when those channels would randomly become unscrambled for a day or two on my TV and that was pretty cool.

When I got older and actually started deeding. I did the same thing a friend suggested and recorded the computer screen with an old camcorder. I even put the headphones up to the camera's mic so it would have sound.

And of course magazines in the woods etc..

No, not all TVs have HDMI CEC or whatever you call it.

Did you check the TV settings? The feature might be off by default or called something different.

Basically.

When I had a Roku stick hooked up to my TV. All I had to do was press any button on the Roku remote and it would automatically switch inputs. It was very nice.
