CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Before he turned 40, Roland G. Fryer Jr. had earned tenure at Harvard, received a MacArthur genius grant and won the most prestigious award for young American economists. He stoked a national debate by concluding that police officers show no bias in the shootings of black men.

But his rapid ascent has taken a troubling turn as Harvard officials review a university investigators conclusion that Dr. Fryer fostered a work environment hostile to women, one filled with sexual talk and bullying.

The findings, reviewed by The New York Times, found that Dr. Fryer had engaged in unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature toward four women who worked in the Harvard-affiliated research lab he created. In one case, his persistent and pervasive conduct contributed to stress that resulted in the accusers taking disability leave, the investigator found. The investigator could not substantiate some allegations, including one asserting retaliation by Dr. Fryer.

Harvard is still investigating a similar complaint from a woman who worked in the lab a decade ago. That woman says Dr. Fryer made what she considered sexual overtures, then retaliated against her after she rebuffed him.

Harvard is not expected to take action until officials have finished investigating all of the complaints against him, according to people familiar with the process. Possible outcomes include a reprimand, suspension or dismissal.

As an African-American, Dr. Fryer has been a trailblazer in rising to the top tier of a field dominated by white men. He was, at 30, the youngest black professor to be granted tenure at Harvard.

Now 41, he is one of Harvards best-paid faculty members, earning more than $600,000, the universitys 2016 tax filing shows. He has brought at least $33.6 million in grants to the university, according to a rsum on his Harvard web page.

The sexual-harassment accusations have unsettled the economics profession, which is struggling with a history of bias against women. Dr. Fryer was recently elected to the executive board of the American Economic Association, the most prestigious body in academic economics, and the group says it will consider the Harvard inquirys conclusions when they are released.

Dr. Fryer told a Harvard investigator that any sexual banter in his office was related to his research and in the spirit of academic freedom. He wrote in his response to the complaint that certainly no one ever brought to my attention that I ever said anything that made any employee uncomfortable.

But in interviews with The New York Times and for Harvards investigation, former employees described Dr. Fryer as a bully and the lab as a place where sexual jokes and comments were routine, and where employees were expected to laugh along with the group or risk being isolated. Documents and interviews suggest that Dr. Fryer was told repeatedly over the course of 10 years by employees and by at least one university official that his conduct was out of line.

Public universities need to be elevated higher in the rankings. There are some that are up there, but most of the top 50 universities in the US are private. One possibility is that more people will start applying to them and then as a result they will get more selective.

In reality, Communism is a system, that when actually executed as it should be, works much better than any other system for a government structure.

In reality, people pursue their own agendas more than the common good, which causes the system to be incredibly corrupt. You can't blame them for doing so either, as if you lose a position of status in a communist system, good luck ever getting it back. The government runs everything. It's not like you can go find a new company and have a fresh start.

Let's draw numbers on the balls to track them, shall we?

Box 1, Gold 1 = #1
Box 1, Gold 2 = #2
Box 2, Gold = #3

You choose a box at random. This is 1/3 probability. You choose a ball at random. This is 1/2 probability (within that box).

Okay I believe this is correct. Another way to think of the final answer is to say that if one were to run this experiment thousands of times, they would pull out another gold ball 2/3 of the time that the first one they pull out is gold.

I don't think this is true, actually. I have heard calls for segregated communities, neighborhoods, etc. from the anti-gentrification crowd in these groups. So that's not the creation of an entirely new state, but certainly the creation of segregated neighborhoods.

You do realize that the attitude expressed by TC is exactly why liberal costal elitists, no matter how many millions of them there are shouldn't have a strong say in parts of the country (90% of it) where they look down on everyone from there and couldn't begin to give a damn about either.

So when people, and I'm sure TC is one of them, cry about the EC come election time. This attitude. This exact thing is why it's there and never going anywhere.

This is why we should return to a more states' rights oriented system as opposed to a system where the federal government runs loads of things. Think of how the average person spends way more in federal taxes than what they send to their state.

It's probably better if we let states run most things at this point, otherwise the coasts and Middle America will keep clashing.

the US actually funded and provided support to the Taliban. They provided weapons to Afghanis who were resisting the Soviets.

A decision that Jimmy Carter still defends to this day. I agree with him.

I'm not an expert on the War in Afghanistan or anything, but I've read articles that indicate our real problem there is that we can't stop Pakistan from sheltering the Pakistani Taliban and other jihadist groups that then provide support to the Afghan Taliban. It's not like we are still struggling against the exact same guys we armed 30 years ago. Most of those guys are probably dead or retired. Maybe some are in leadership positions, but still, the real issue is the support they are getting in the present day, not 30 years ago.

What do you mean?

It's a long story but basically I grew up in a town with lots of really religious conservatives and stuff so no one would have dared asking something like that in HS except for the "bad kids", and those kinds of kids weren't in the advanced classes and were segregated off in a different part of the school.
