| green butter 07/20/18 4:02:00 PM #10 | my observation, since my wife watches the (god awful) show: in terms of the "nerd culture" angle, the feel just isnt right, probably because it's a mass market show about a niche audience. like for example, that episode where sheldon is agonizing over whether to get a PS4 or Xbox One. people laugh because they know those are the two new video game consoles, sheldon is putting too much effort into a dumb/childish decision, etc. but we all know here that the real Sheldon would not be caught dead playing on a game console... we all know that he would have a $6000 gaming PC and would brag about its benchmarks daily, but of course this would be lost on middle america audiences. and thats really the crux of it, the nerd culture angle of the show is just window dressing, with the meat of the show being that 90% of it is about these awkward guys talking about girls, dating girls, wanting to date girls, marrying girls, having sex with girls, etc not that i have a problem with the nerd culture element of the show, it's just not very clever. --- |

| green butter 07/20/18 3:52:30 PM #5 | if you dont mind getting pushed around then get a spot on the floor, feeling the energy of the crowd while you see & hear the performance is a pretty mindblowing experience imo, there is a lot of spiritual energy there. to me, listening to a band and seeing them live are two completely different experiences. get there before doors open so you can get a good spot, stay out of the mosh pit if you dont want your ass kicked, if you're trying to sneak in ganj then tell your gf to keep it in between her boobs, since you'll probably be patted down at the door. have fun, concerts are a blast --- |

| green butter 07/20/18 3:32:49 PM #20 | Questionmarktarius posted... green butter posted...Just had a meeting about this today at work actually. without revealing anything identifying or proprietary, the situation is basically that the networks know they're on their way out and just keep jacking up the prices for their channels to get whatever money they can while it's still there. this ultimately hurts the smaller cable providers (aka MSOs, and there actually are a bunch) because they have to struggle to pay fees someone like Comcast can easily do, and this is on top of other fees (i.e. the city takes a cut of cable sales, known as franchising fees). the biggest culprit of this is pro sports, lots of people want this and the networks charge a ton for it, because without the NFL a lot of ppl will not have any motivation for cable TV. the future for media is all in streaming, wifi,etc. margins are huge and cable companies are investing a ton into them, even in ways you cant see (i.e. cable companies buying their own netflix servers so the users have faster connections). right now it's just a transitional phase. --- |

Just had a meeting about this today at work actually. Ultimately streaming is the best option for all involved and once the older generation dies off we will see its benefits more --- |
