Are you actually interested or not? I definitely understand it's adding more plastic and people should point that out. A good outcome from this would be for Starbucks to feel that people want to reduce their plastic consumption and they should improve and continue this idea. Hopefully other companies would follow suit and maybe even try to one up them. They won't do it if people aren't interested in recycling their drink containers (you know, like no one was before this story came out).

It's easy to just say there's no point in recycling at all because it's not our fault, or it's too late, or we don't want to give up our conveniences. I'm not some recycling zealot and I throw my Diet Mtn Dew cans in the trash. The federal government is unlikely to fix it or enforce similar restrictions whether it's liberal or conservative. It's not ideal to entice companies to reduce their environmental impact with our business and likes and tweets but I find it more realistic than other options.

It's definitely disappointing they didn't get this right. I know you really like talking about that one part so I'll mention it several times in this post. They fucked that up. I enjoy thinking about the entire situation and how this affects the larger picture.

Yeah, I've heard that argument a lot. I don't romanticize the impact of recycling. We are definitely already fucked. In some ways part of the marketing here is selling the illusion that you're not actively poisoning the earth every day you exist w/ everything you do.

Well, there was another post that said the straws fuck up the recycling machines because of their annoying shape. Seattle's banning straws in general so they must feel that eliminating straws in particular will help the facilities run smoother. Seattle takes their recycling pretty seriously, I don't think Starbucks really expects the average middle america customer to make any contribution to our nationwide recycling no matter how many grams they're throwing away daily. It would definitely clearly be best if the lid used a half gram less plastic. But maybe they are just trolling people with Parkinson's which would be kinda sick.

Well, I guess your point is that the only form of environmental trash activism you'll accept can't be inconvenient to any number of people at all and can't ask for any effort or input from the masses of people who are actually the ones using all this shit. Which I don't necessarily disagree with because I think we're just way beyond the point of fixing anything. But at the very least I would like to give corporations the impression that reducing negative environmental impact is good marketing and a worthwhile thing for them to do.
