Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII) The Good: I enjoy Lightning's character in Final Fantasy XIII because she displays a hard exterior, but she pretty clearly has a soft side, which comes out when she's around Serah and Hope. I really enjoyed the chapters where Lightning and Hope were journeying together just the two of them. She almost takes a motherly concern toward him as she sees how much his desire for revenge is consuming him (although I'm sure there's also a part of her that's thinking that if Hope DID kill Snow, it honestly wouldn't be that bad). The Bad: Honestly, Lightning probably would've been higher just on the basis of Final Fantasy XIII. Once Square literally started deifying her and starting forcing her down our throats, I got a little sick of her because she just became a Creator's Pet. She's kind of a prime example of how Square just doesn't seem to "get it" nowadays. The Best: Snarky Lightning is the best Lightning. Her Comic Book Guy impression with "Worst birthday ever" probably tops the list, but she's got so much good snark in the game. Also, I'm pretty sure Hope is the only party member Lightning doesn't punch or slap at some point. My personal favorite is her punching Snow in the face, him getting back up and trying to talk to her, and then her punching him in the face again. --- |

| LeonhartFour 08/01/18 10:47:23 PM #75 | 14. Vivi Ornitier (Final Fantasy IX) The Good: Vivi is one of the most inherently likable characters in the series. He's got the classic black mage design and a childlike innocence. His struggles to figure out who and what he is make him easy to sympathize with, especially when you visit the Black Mage Village and they're all attempting to understand something they don't have the capacity to grasp yet. I also like his wonderment and fascination with the world, especially when you visit Dali and he's just going around like saying stuff like, "Gee whiz, a windmill!" The Bad: Vivi's insecurities and naivete make him easy to be taken advantage of, especially early on. I think his interactions with Puck are kind of awkward because Vivi regards him as a friend and the game tries to make you think it's reciprocated, but it never feels like it to me. Also, his talks with Zidane can be kind of weird sometimes, like the time that Zidane decided that the best way to take Vivi's mind off of things was to take a leak together. The Best: The scene with Black Waltz No. 3 on the cargo ship is super good, with the look in his eyes as the other black mages tumble from the ship and then Vivi blasting Black Waltz No. 3 with a fire spell. I also love the scene in the Wind Shrine between him and Steiner, with the latter saying, "I trust you, Vivi," right as he charges into the fray. It's a really cool scene. --- |

| LeonhartFour 07/31/18 10:01:32 PM #65 | 10. Yuna (Final Fantasy X) The Good: Yuna is a wonderful character. She has one of my favorite designs in the series. I generally dont use summons or summoners much in Final Fantasy, but shes the exception. I like the way FFX uses summons compared to other games, and I like her unique animations with how she interacts with her aeons. Plus, you can cheese a lot of storyline bosses by stacking up aeon Overdrives, and theres nothing quite as satisfying in the post-game than hearing the tink of Yunas staff and seeing 5 digits of damage. She has a great relationship with Tidus, and they are easily the best couple in the series. Stay with me until the end. Please. Not until the end. Always. So good. The Bad: I actually like Final Fantasy X-2 more than most (I got the Perfect Ending, which requires a 100% file and was totally not worth all the time that took based on the quality of said ending), but Yuna is not a reason why. Whether shes getting jealous over Lenne or somehow considering Rikku the role model of who she should aspire to be, its just hard to believe this is the same girl from FFX. I can almost forgive that aspect of it because maybe theres a part of her that wants to be a normal girl now and she has no real idea of what being normal means, but the inexcusable part is at the end where she talks at length about how she regrets what she did at the end of FFX. That should never have happened. The Best: And this aspect of Yuna in Final Fantasy X is exactly why its inexcusable. The best part of Yunas character is her resolve to bring an end to Sin, no matter what it takes. Theres literally a song in the game called Yunas Determination for a reason (eat your heart out, Undertale). Even when everything shes known and believed in crumbles around her, Yevon turns against her, and Tidus even offers her the easy way out, she wont take it. When the time comes to make her choice about the Final Aeon, her speech to Yunalesca is so great. Everyone focuses on Aurons speech before the battle (and for good reason), but Yunas speech is excellent because it puts her resolve on full display. Once again, she refuses to take the easy way out. It would be so easyto let my fate carry me awayfollowing this same path my whole life through. But I knowI cant. What I do, I dowith no regrets. --- |
