I've been having blurry vision, pain in my eyes, issues focusing/my eyes have been crossing (involuntary eye movement)/double vision. The left side of my face has been going numb and tingly. I've had problems with my balance and my gait has been weird. Issues with my bowels like really constipated often. I've had a lot of lightheadedness.

I've been constantly fatigued for no reason even though I sleep for at least 8 hours a night. I started getting some sexual dysfunction which I attributed to my antidepressant even though I've been on the same dose for like 3 months but it just started in the past month. I had my psychiatrist okay me to go on a half dose of what I was on though just to see.

I've been having a lot of mental fogginess, short term memory problems, a hard time remembering words, and speech issues.

I've also been having pain in my kidney/lower rib/upper belly area which I thought might be my kidneys because I have enlarged ureters but that doesn't really cause pain. But I was looking up early symptoms of MS and I guess there's something known as the "MS hug" which is tightness around the rib/upper belly area. It's also called dysesthesia. So it could be that.

Idk I'm not trying to webmd myself but those are a lot of symptoms that are similar to early symptoms of MS so I was like shit. I thought a lot of the stuff may have been because of me stopping drinking but it just seems to have started in the last 3 months or so. Then I had an event in college too where they said it may have been linked to MS. So I figured I'll get a referral. I just really don't want to get diagnosed.

Fibromyalgia maybe? And Idk if it would explain all of it, but some of that could definitely be PAWS.

If I do I'm seriously just going to fucking dump my boyfriend because he's not going to want to be tied down with someone who is going to be disabled because he's way too active for that and I'm going to move into a studio apartment and become a hermit who just goes to work until I can't anymore and then I'll just stay alone until I die. It's fucking pointless to try to have a relationship because I'm not gonna suck someone into that. I've seen how my parents are so why bother.

If that's how you're going to play things, at least get some sugar gliders. Amazing animals that make demonic noises and only love one human.

It's not about volume or debilitation. It's about whether or not you can honestly stop drinking. If you can start drinking and put it down and not have any type of abnormal reaction/obsessive thoughts about alcohol or drinking you're not an alcoholic. When an alcoholic drinks they can't stop thinking about alcohol and when they'll get their next drink. They may have dry periods but once they pick up their first drink it's on again. The obsessive thoughts are what makes someone an alcoholic.

A normal drinker doesn't sit at work and think, "Man, I can't wait to get out of here so I can go to the store and buy a fifth so I can get drunk tonight." and then obsessively think about it all day. A normal drinker may think, "Can't wait to have a beer with my friends tonight!" as a casual thought but they won't think about it all. day. long. obsessively.

Alcoholics also have a physical craving for alcohol. When they're not drinking their body WANTS them to be drinking. So much so that they can actually have a physical pain. Or when they start drinking and don't drink as much as they'd like or they don't get drunk they get a physical pain because of it because they want and need more alcohol to be satisfied.

When I used to drink almost every day if I'd go out to dinner and only drink one drink I'd just sit there and think when, "When are we going to be done so I can go home and get shit faced" and I'd have such a bad feeling in my stomach because that's all I wanted. It's a sad way to live. It's not fun at all.

This is so spot on.

Liquor stores in my state close at ten. Back when I was half-assing trying to quit I would just tell myself I wasn't going to buy any that day. This would go well until about 9:30 or so. I didn't feel pain, but I would suddenly get really anxious and irritable. My face got sweaty and my skin would itch. Then I'd usually go grab my car keys.

And honestly, now I have almost 6 months sober and I JUST completed FIVE MONTHS of treatment and I still have thoughts of how I want to drink. I don't get the physical craving, thank goodness. But I sit and think about how I could be drinking or how much less bored I'd feel if I were drunk right now. Sometimes I salivate thinking about drinking.

That was me for about six months, then it got a bit easier. Everyone's different obviously, but now it's mostly cramories - a weird feeling that's difficult to describe that is kind of like a mix of a craving and a memory. Like I'll be at Chipotle in the evening, notice the time, and then glance across the street at the giant liquor store. I don't get an urge to go over, but I'll think about how I used to and how easy it would be to walk over. I'd be there in two minutes.
