They are certainly more neutral than Breitbart and all these other places that spread blatant misinformation and conservative narratives and justify it by saying they're the "balance" to other media. It doesn't make sense to complain about all of these places being biased and then watch/read news that's even moreover biased, but more palatable.

I find one of the best news sources for US news is the BBC. They lean left, but they're not nearly as invested in the outcome of the story so they tend to just report the facts.

I know you "anticipate it", but as often as possible when I share a source here, it's the BBC version.

I agree with you. I don't remember what links you've posted, but if you're consistently posting the BBC, you're damn near the only one.

We've gotten to the point where I can't think of any non-blatantly conservative source that is accepted by conservatives. People are dismissing NYT, WAPO, CNN, the New Yorker, NP goddamn R. Network news, cable news, print news, internet based news, podcasts, none of it is legitimate anymore. It doesn't seem distinguishable from simply not wanting to believed negative info or info that challenges a world view.

And I anticipate someone trotting out the BBC or AP or something, but that's clearly not what's linked or shared here or elsewhere. It's always Breitbart, Daily Wire/Caller, Fox News, Gateway Pundit, Washington Times. All sources that coincidentally tell conservatives what they want to hear.

its not really weird at all when you consider that representative democracy is a game of social networking and backroom alliance forging

and men who've been playing that game for 40 years have much closer alliances with each other than the women who joined it 10 years ago

note that 'not weird' is different from 'not bad'

it is bad.

I'm being sarcastic in defining patriarchy, exclusion, and old boys clubs as "weirdness". By weirdness, I mean it's not a natural or obvious result, it's not something that's "just the way it is", it's a direct effect of a social system.

I'd submit to every possible type of investing, take a lie detector, absolutely anything that would make me more likely to be believed. I'd want my friends to testify under oath too, especially the one who was alleged to be in the room. Especially if my defense is that I wasn't even there and so it literally couldn't have been me, that would be found out and my accusers and the people who helped them would be destroyed by the public. I'd be honest about my actual flaws that I actually have if I had a drinking problem or a being an asshole problem.

Because his ideology cannot account for modern contexts when it comes to economic regulations because he has a view of government power that's rooted in political ideology and conservative versions of historical narratives.

You can't have a growth in constitutional civil liberties under Kavanagh because his idea of civil rights is pegged to a times when civil rights barely existed and whole groups of people were explicitly, maliciously excluded from civic, social, or political equality. As Scalia admitted, his worldwide view doesn't even get you to Brown v. Board. That's worrying.

People with marginalized identities economically less powerful people, etc are all going to stagnate or backslide the entire time he's on the court.

Yes. Giving criminals all these rights is half the reason they've gotten so bold. Start putting a bullet through their head, right there on the courtroom floor, the second the judge says "Guilty" and watch how quickly it stops. Even those who get off on technicalities will be scarred for life by all the blood on the witness stand and will think twice before offending again.

What about people who are falsely convicted?

Okay - let's change that. As soon as the judge rules "Guilty", the criminal is asked "Do you plan to appeal?" If so, they've got 24 hours to file the appeal or they're dead; if not, bam, bullet. If they have no further avenue of appeal, bam.

If they're in a prison labour state, then life without parole works too, but fuck using life sentences in places where prison is basically just a hotel you can't leave.

So you're all for killing innocent people if they can't prove it or file the appeal on time?

If you've just been told "you've got 24 hours to file the appeal or you're dead", that's... probably going to be the only thing you focus on, unless you're actually guilty.

And there's no need for them to prove innocence. The obligation is still on the state to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. That doesn't change.

If you're not trolling, you're straight up violently insane and ignorant of history. We've lived through times where the dp was used willy-nilly and it wasn't a crimeless utopia. Crime was much higher, people still stole frequently. People were simply killed for disproportionate stuff.

Furthermore, you're completely ignoring the concept of due process and how your rules would be used in a racist, sexist, and classist way...just as it was when we already did it.

Not just "innocent until proven guilty", but going out of their way to try to discredit the accuser based on internet sleuthing.

She was already caught in a lie though. She said that his friend witnessed the entire thing happen, but he spoke recently on the matter and said that this event never happened in the first place. So either two people are lying, or one person is lying...

I can't help but think logically and scientifically, so I'd need to see some physical evidence to believe what the accuser is saying. The fact she was paid by Feinsteine to come forward makes the accusation extremely suspicious. Otherwise, you're deciding the fate of a man's career and life based on a high school rumor that has zero physical evidence behind it, that an "eye-witness" named by the accuser says didn't happen.

He said he didn't recall. And of course he did because otherwise, he'd be publicly admitting to being an accessory to attempted rape. You're talking about science and needing a high level of evidence to prove someone's guilt and destroy their life and reputation. But you're willing to take an inconclusive statement and use it as conclusive proof that the accuser is a politically motivated liar, destroying her life and denying her assault.

Why didn't this come out much earlier? If it was actually serious or really happened, you think that it would have been brought up... you know, right after it happened? Maybe it didn't happen at all like the accuser said, and it's just a politically-motivated scheme to stop him from being nominated to the SC. Do you have any evidence at all or any source with evidence? The timing is just too perfect for this NOT to be politically-motivated.

What bothers me the most about this whole thing is that these accusations are being trumpeted by The Washington Post, which is essentially a leftist propaganda outlet. It's just a leftist version of Breitbart... they openly said they wanted Hillary to win, so why would I trust what they say about one of Trump's nominees when there is no evidence to back the claim up and it happened so long ago that no one has any recollection of the event?

It came out in 2012 in private. She's told doctors, her husband, Congress people etc before he was ever nominated. She's taken and passed a polygraph and may even be willing to testify in front of Congress. We know by now that many victims try to move on without reporting or are scared to accuse a powerful person. It makes sense that this is coming to a head now because he's about to be appointed for life to the goddamn Supreme Court and will have power over women's rights and many other things. The timing isn't suspicious, it's exactly what you'd suspect. She talked about it years ago and now she's talking about it to stop the guy from being untouchable.

As for the Washington Post.....everything you posted there is an absolute joke. Breitbart is a white nationalist/alt-right rag aimed purely at stoking conservative prejudice. The Washington Post is a highly respected organization with actual journalistic ethics that exposed Watergate.

capitalism at work

Monopolies that are the product of government bureaucracy preventing competition from taking place != capitalism. Stop tagging me.

you must have a very specific and narrow definition of what capitalism is

Dude you really should read a goddam book or something if you think that is what capitalism is.

At what point do we acknowledge that in a system where money is speech and money buys access, platforms, legitimacy, and influence this is gonna inevitably happen? Any system that allows the wealthy to have such outsized influence is going to end up this way, so it sounds like a pretty inevitable consequence of our form of capitalism, or at least one that would require a lot to separate out. This defense sounds a lot like the "it wasn't true" socialism defense that comes up after a self-proclaimed socialist country fails.

According to this logic, we'd expect that all the titans of industry from the past would've never been toppled. But that's simply not true. In the top 100 companies today, IIRC most of them are new companies that were formed in the last 20 or less years.

What happened to GE? What happened to Kodak? Etc.

I'm not sure I really get it. You seemed to be saying corporate collusion with government to raise barriers to entry through regulations and government favoritism is why things like this happen. But then you're highlighting new businesses as if to say the barriers to entry aren't actually that high. I'd argue that the huge companies become hulking behemoths that fall behind the time and are chiefly concerned with making safe, steady gains, and other companies exploit obvious gaps that expose how out of date those companies are. I'd say it's during this stage when companies try to collude with the government to block competition, but it doesn't matter when you're selling analog cameras at the start of the digital revolution. The fundamental problem there is that the companies have the power to do this, and you can't limit that power without limiting their speech.

That doesn't really apply to examples like the one TC posted though. There are actually high barriers to entry there, but that's due the time and resources to create a new, effective drug. Most of the basic research is actually done/funded by the government, these companies spend most their money on marketing and stock buybacks, not research. Then they price gouge because the demand for the one pill that's keeping x group alive is pretty easy to keep up nearly regardless of price because people enjoy living.

Not really. Most people don't inherit any wealth, and rich families lose most of their money by the 3rd generation that inherited any. As long as your grandparents and parents reproduced and didn't royally fuck up, you're basically on the same footing as everyone else.

I disagree. I'm from a fairly poor white family but I had one advantage: my grandparents.
My grandpa was an officer in the Air Force. They were well off and taken care of even in their later years due to his pension. I got my first car because they were able to afford it, I was able to go to a college out of my home state because they lived there and allowed me to stay with them, when my mom left my dad they were able to pay her rent so we had a place to stay. Etc.
If I were black, my grandpa would not have been as successful. If he hadn't been as successful I would not be in the place I am today.

My parents and grandparents were poor farmers from a third world country. Being white didn't give me any special advantages that a black male my age didn't have access to.

You weren't associated with all the negative stereotypes associated with black males your age. You weren't a victim of race related discrimination in housing, employment, education, policing, etc. You weren't stuck in a racially segregated housing project as a person trapped in inter-generational, race related property, surrounded by others in the same situation. Your parents were not limited by pre-existing racism and started over when they came here, which counts for a lot (I attribute my personal success to this factor as an immigrant and child of immigrants) etc.

None of this is to minimize your accomplishments. You're clearly an intelligent guy who probably works significantly harder than average. But to say a black man your age wouldn't likely face numerous challenges based on race that didn't...that's unlikely. Especially since I think you mentioned living in the Chicago area in the past.

I grew up in an area that was mostly black. Lived in the same exact type of housing and had access to the same exact type of schools.

In fact, my parents had nothing and were worse off when they came here than many black families who at least had something. The only thing I can agree with you on is policing, but that's about it and most black people don't ever have that type of horror-story experience with a cop.

What about the stereotyping? What about the generational aspect of being in the same place over time? What about the different ways that your skin color alone affects the way people behave towards you. I agree that bad housing is bad housing while you live there, but it's not equally easy for a black family and a white family to leave that situation due to differences in employment, loan discrimination etc. You may have gone to a terrible, segregated school, but people of different races aren't treated equally even within a school considering effects like the school to prison pipeline.

I don't doubt that you put up with a lot of BS in terms of your poverty and living situation, but others had that, plus race based challenges, minus the type of parents who can decide to go to a new country and start over successfully.
