| Panthera 07/26/18 2:19:01 PM #22 | Socialism referring to a system where the government basically controls everything is not exactly some weird fringe idea, it was pretty mainstream until relatively recently when for whatever reason people started using socialism to just refer to anything left wing. Originally, the Soviet Union as it ended up would be the definitive example of socialism, and communism was the idea that such a system would be best off by eventually transitioning to some sort of weird anarchic system that no one can really define or explain. Foolmo and Muffin aren't doing any sort of trolling by talking about socialism as a system that oppose private industry and favours government oversight of basically everything, that's pretty much what socialism has always meant, especially in North America where it seems like the whole "like capitalism but I guess with higher taxes" thing took longer to start being called "democratic socialism" than it did in Europe --- Meow! |

I don't think the first point is really relevant, as I don't think the online gaming environment is anything other than a reflection of society at large and white men being the majority of western society is what leads there not being much in the way of specific slurs for us. If every white guy online never said another bad thing, it wouldn't result in the creation of new anti-white slurs or cracker becoming more common, you'd still basically just see other groups throwing slurs at each other. You'd have to change society as a whole for that to change, I think I agree that it's not bigotry to acknowledge a specific group tends to have a certain problem, however I do think it veers into bigoted territory when people speak as if members of that group are the only ones who have that problem even when there's no evidence to support the claim. I don't want to suggest that white men isn't a demographic with a lot of scumbags in it, just that removing the white male scumbags wouldn't equate to no scumbags existing anymore. --- Meow! |

People do condemn others for racism that tries to use the word preference as a shield, as if it's just entirely natural that you magically were born with an instinctive aversion to all the wildly different looking people who happen to fall under a specific racial label, particularly when the people who fall under that racial label have been marginalized and portrayed as undesirable for ages in the society you grew up in. Because it's obvious bullshit. Being less attracted to black people on average is a preference, not being attracted to black people is not because black people are nowhere near all similar enough to not have far too many exceptions for that kind of generalized statement to ever be true. This is impossible to even make sense of. Where did I say it's "natural" for people to react in any given way or draw any distinction between different situations like you're implying? My point is that in general you're going to have a hard time making a legitimate point on the issue if you don't put effort into detailing how you're determining exactly who is doing the things you're criticizing, since otherwise you are literally just assuming you're right by default. For example, do you think non-white men never say anything sexist? Do you think white women never say anything racist? Safe to say you don't, since those would be dumb things to believe, but the conversation tends to act like it's the case because painting a picture where one demographic is the entire problem is easier to digest than looking at the bigger picture, which is that the mostly anonymous nature of online gaming tends to give people an excuse to be open about their bigotry, regardless of who they are. White men are the majority in online game so we're the most common ones doing it, sure, and there are obviously societal aspects that encourage more prejudice from the majority so that helps make it even more common, but it's not the whole story. It's important to acknowledge it's not as simple as just saying one group of people are the bad guys if you want to have any chance of making progress on the issue. Racism from women, sexism from non-white people, homophobia from people who aren't straight white guys, etc. Bigotry doesn't become acceptable based on the demographic engaging in it, it's wrong no matter what and that needs to be addressed. The process of addressing it will naturally tend to focus more on white men than other groups for reasons outlined above, but entirely overlooking the same behavior from others doesn't help anyone and in fact just gives the shittier members of the white guy demographic reason to justify their persecution complex. --- Meow! |

Why does humanity even exist if this is the best we can muster, you find yourself tempted to ask. But then you find a topic that goes to a whole new level of absurdity. You realize that everything you thought you knew about the depths man could sink to was a lie, as the truth is far too miserable to be easily accepted without hard evidence. It dawns on you that watching the world burn would be an improvement, if only for the scent of the ashes drowning out the stench of the words you see before you. You can no longer see a reason for the entire concept of valuing human life to be a thing, and a part of you begins to wonder whether or not you have any purpose in continuing on. You've seen something so overwhelmingly foolish, so staggeringly stupid, so disgustingly pathetic, that it kills the very idea of happiness and leaves your life a dead, empty void.
