There's a lot of classic literature that's very dense and difficult for an unaccomplished reader(i.e. most high school students) to fully comprehend and appreciate.
It's why you see stuff like To Kill A Mockingbird and The Grapes of Wrath so much: they're very straightforward stories(and at least the former is legitimately great.)

I just wish it had the balls to admit that Albus Potter is gay

Yes! That is very much the subtext, isn't it? And Harry doesn't know how to relate to someone with so different a perspective, when his life, difficult though it was, has largely rewarded his particular approach things. I also love that Scorpius is also a little atypically masculine, willfully rejecting a lot of the stereotypical performances in favor or something more true to himself. And of course, it's the tragedy in his own family that forces Scorpius to take ownership of his emotions and mental well-being at such a young age. Scorpius's sense of self is a foil to Albus Potter's insecurity.

There is clearly good stuff here, a lot of marvelous potential that just didn't pan out.

Yeah, I actually really liked Scorpius. The parts featuring Draco were also pretty good, because we got some insight into how he dealt with things re: Potter and Voldemort. Shame the plot was such a far-fetched mess it had to rely on time-turners.

That's very over-broad logic. I mean, it implies that no ideology has ever killed anyone, even implicitly violent ideologies(which Stalinism most definitely is). That's perhaps a vastly more generous standard than we should be using.

Stainism should never have happened. If you read up on the Russian Revolution, Lenin never intended for Stalin to take power and instead wanted Trotsky to take his place because he knew how insane Stalin was.

So? It DID happen. Lenin wasn't exactly in a rush to hold elections or otherwise empower the people politically. You can argue that that was necessary while the Civil War was raging(certainly there was a lot of hand-wringing over the fact that the Paris Commune spent months having elections while the 3rd Republic gathered up its armies to crush it), but that doesn't explain the after. Lenin was also responsible for empowering Stalin in the first place: he was Lenin's left-hand, basically, going back to before the Revolution. Lenin knew Trotsky and Stalin hated each other, but prepared no contingencies, and, of course, Stalin had long controlled the Soviet bureaucracy.
It is a shame: a Trotskyist USSR would probably have been better and a much more interesting and instructive failure than the one we got.

I really hate the modern interpretation of him just being a terrible racist. His views on other people (including white foreigners) stems from his legitimate xenophobia. His views weren't political. He was a secluded guy that didn't really get along with anyone and was literally terrified of going outside or seeing people not like him. Actual racism was only a part of his particular neurosis and it's also one of the most important factors in his work. It's so reductionist to just say "This old dead guy was racist i don't like racists bad man"; especially when people bring up that fucking cat as their strongest supporting evidence every time. He had a lot of issues and his life sucked but we wouldn't have the stories we do without it. His views were taboo but they greatly enhanced his story telling.

It sucks. The man had some cool ideas, but it sucks that he was such a wingnut. He's also from the time period where opinion on that was starting to turn a bit, making him look even worse.

My problem about knowing the artist is that I always wonder how much of their views bled into their work.

Yeah, Lovecraft is really disappointing, because he was extremely and unrepentedly racist until the end, and it definitely poisons his work. It's particularly disappointing given many of his contemporaries actually got better on the subject over time(such as Robert E. Howard, best known for various Conan the Barbarian stories). And Tolkien made the dwarves Semitic because he thought Hebrew was cool and was really grossed out by racists reading his work as endorsing racism(and there's some evidence he was working on some stories to make that harder).

Here at this final hour, in this quiet place Harlem has come to bid farewell to one of its brightest hopes -extinguished now, and gone from us forever. For Harlem is where he worked and where he struggled and fought his home of homes, where his heart was, and where his people are and it is, therefore, most fitting that we meet once again in Harlem to share these last moments with him. For Harlem has ever been gracious to those who have loved her, have fought her, and have defended her honor even to the death.
It is not in the memory of man that this beleaguered, unfortunate, but nonetheless proud community has found a braver, more gallant young champion than this Afro-American who lies before us unconquered still. I say the word again, as he would want me to : Afro-American Afro-American Malcolm, who was a master, was most meticulous in his use of words. Nobody knew better than he the power words have over minds of men. Malcolm had stopped being a Negro years ago. It had become too small, too puny, too weak a word for him. Malcolm was bigger than that. Malcolm had become an Afro-American and he wanted so desperately that we, that all his people, would become Afro-Americans too.

There are those who will consider it their duty, as friends of the Negro people, to tell us to revile him, to flee, even from the presence of his memory, to save ourselves by writing him out of the history of our turbulent times. Many will ask what Harlem finds to honor in this stormy, controversial and bold young captain and we will smile. Many will say turn away away from this man, for he is not a man but a demon, a monster, a subverter and an enemy of the black man and we will smile. They will say that he is of hate a fanatic, a racist who can only bring evil to the cause for which you struggle! And we will answer and say to them : Did you ever talk to Brother Malcolm? Did you ever touch him, or have him smile at you? Did you ever really listen to him? Did he ever do a mean thing? Was he ever himself associated with violence or any public disturbance? For if you did you would know him. And if you knew him you would know why we must honor him.

Malcolm was our manhood, our living, black manhood! This was his meaning to his people. And, in honoring him, we honor the best in ourselves. Last year, from Africa, he wrote these words to a friend: My journey, he says, is almost ended, and I have a much broader scope than when I started out, which I believe will add new life and dimension to our struggle for freedom and honor and dignity in the States. I am writing these things so that you will know for a fact the tremendous sympathy and support we have among the African States for our Human Rights struggle. The main thing is that we keep a United Front wherein our most valuable time and energy will not be wasted fighting each other. However we may have differed with him or with each other about him and his value as a man let his going from us serve only to bring us together, now.

Consigning these mortal remains to earth, the common mother of all, secure in the knowledge that what we place in the ground is no more now a man but a seed which, after the winter of our discontent, will come forth again to meet us. And we will know him then for what he was and is a Prince our own black shining Prince! who didnt hesitate to die, because he loved us so.

Because the gap in the Senate race and Agricultural Commissioner race have both narrowed enough to trigger a mandatory hand recount, whereas the Gubernatorial race has narrowed enough to trigger a mechanical recount. Recounts generally don't result in a large change of vote totals, but the Agricultural Commissioner race is separated by something ridiculous like ~500 votes, so that result could well change. Nelson's race is more of a long-shot, and Gillum really doesn't have any hope, barring something verging on fraud.
