There's a lot of classic literature that's very dense and difficult for an unaccomplished reader(i.e. most high school students) to fully comprehend and appreciate.
It's why you see stuff like To Kill A Mockingbird and The Grapes of Wrath so much: they're very straightforward stories(and at least the former is legitimately great.)

I still can't believe they invested more money in Bortles, though I recognize he's merely mediocre now.
I can say that with authority, as being a Bills fan has taught me just how wide a range there is between mediocre and bad. And between bad and Nathan Peterman.

Gladius is fun, even though it's slow-paced, long, unbalanced, and feels vaguely unfinished(because it was apparently rushed).

Yes! That is very much the subtext, isn't it? And Harry doesn't know how to relate to someone with so different a perspective, when his life, difficult though it was, has largely rewarded his particular approach things. I also love that Scorpius is also a little atypically masculine, willfully rejecting a lot of the stereotypical performances in favor or something more true to himself. And of course, it's the tragedy in his own family that forces Scorpius to take ownership of his emotions and mental well-being at such a young age. Scorpius's sense of self is a foil to Albus Potter's insecurity.

There is clearly good stuff here, a lot of marvelous potential that just didn't pan out.

Yeah, I actually really liked Scorpius. The parts featuring Draco were also pretty good, because we got some insight into how he dealt with things re: Potter and Voldemort. Shame the plot was such a far-fetched mess it had to rely on time-turners.

So? It DID happen. Lenin wasn't exactly in a rush to hold elections or otherwise empower the people politically. I really hate the modern interpretation of him just being a terrible racist. His views on other people (including white foreigners) stems from his legitimate xenophobia. His views weren't political. He was a secluded guy that didn't really get along with anyone and was literally terrified of going outside or seeing people not like him. Actual racism was only a part of his particular neurosis and it's also one of the most important factors in his work. It's so reductionist to just say "This old dead guy was racist i don't like racists bad man"; especially when people bring up that fucking cat as their strongest supporting evidence every time. He had a lot of issues and his life sucked but we wouldn't have the stories we do without it. His views were taboo but they greatly enhanced his story telling.

I was curious about his books.

He is a fantastic writer and you should absolutely read them. But it's also vital to acknowledge that he was super racist and that it crops up in his work.

It sucks. The man had some cool ideas, but it sucks that he was such a wingnut. He's also from the time period where opinion on that was starting to turn a bit, making him look even worse.

My problem about knowing the artist is that I always wonder how much of their views bled into their work.

Yeah, Lovecraft is really disappointing, because he was extremely and unrepentedly racist until the end, and it definitely poisons his work. It's particularly disappointing given many of his contemporaries actually got better on the subject over time(such as Robert E. Howard, best known for various Conan the Barbarian stories). And Tolkien made the dwarves Semitic because he thought Hebrew was cool and was really grossed out by racists reading his work as endorsing racism(and there's some evidence he was working on some stories to make that harder).

It really didn't, since Sinema is going to win by a fraction of a percent(IF she does win: Maricopa County has red pockets and any outstanding votes from those would benefit McSally). It was just a good year for Democrats(in terms of relative support, not Senate map) and the retiring Republican incumbent is hugely unpopular.

Because the gap in the Senate race and Agricultural Commissioner race have both narrowed enough to trigger a mandatory hand recount, whereas the Gubernatorial race has narrowed enough to trigger a mechanical recount. Recounts generally don't result in a large change of vote totals, but the Agricultural Commissioner race is separated by something ridiculous like ~500 votes, so that result could well change. Nelson's race is more of a long-shot, and Gillum really doesn't have any hope, barring something verging on fraud.
