These events paved the way for the Adventists who formed the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They contended that what had happened on October 22 was not Jesus' return, as Miller had thought, but the start of Jesus' final work of atonement, the cleansing in the heavenly sanctuary, leading up to the Second Coming.

wow, so an entire denomination that persists today was founded because they didn't want to admit that this guy was completely talking out of his ass

Ehh, I am part of that religion. The religion itself has transformed to a more healthy-living type religion and is pretty distanced from this event at this point.

what if we rephrased the question "would you go to jail for a rape that you didn't commit if it meant that 10 actual rapists were punished?"

Then it becomes a slightly different case. In the original example, you have no special interest in the case, and nothing to personally gain or lose, when the innocent person is some random. When it's yourself (or even someone you know), that changes things, and I suspect people's answers would change a lot.

I think for a lot of people choosing to release the innocent, they treat the stranger as if they were a person they knew or cared about. Empathy is about caring for others even when they don't have a direct connection to you.

It doesn't matter if it is a stranger or my mother in this situation. My thought process would go the same way (though my emotional response would differ).

Season 1 was ehh. It was trying too hard to be the old show, with a little "Disney Channel Sitcom" thrown in.

By the second season though I think it found its groove and did its own thing. Seasons 2 and 3 are much better I think.

A good example is Kimmy's daughter. In Season 1, she had that "Disney Channel" smugness that you typically see in the tween stars. But by season 2 they dropped her "I'm too good for this family" schtick and she became just as wacky as the rest of them.

Overall the show has been able to balance their cheesy humor with their adult references and their metahumor so they are not overdoing any of them.

My masters is in education.

Yeah you should have taken the fucking job and grinded out a year or two of experience and hopped

I started out making $36K with a BSME, that was after I turned down an offer for $42K because I thought it was beneath me.

Hate to break it to you but this isn't 1975 where your masters guarantees you a $150,000 job with a corner office and a secretary that blows you

Jesus Christ. I had a mental breakdown because I was making that in factory with zero degrees, and I felt overworked, overly poor, and under appreciated/utilized.

Quit my job and went back to school for STEM.

I can't even imagine imagine making $36k and being back in that situation with a degree. Like, what are we even doing with our lives.

FWIW I boosted my salary with raises and job hops:

2013: 36K
2014: 42K (raise)
2014: 54K (hop)
2015: 60K (hop)
2017: 70K (raise)
2018: Probably 75K or 80K with my bonus

Just gotta play the game

This is similar to me. Graduated with my master's in Education. First job was $30k. Got a promotion that paid $32k plus a live-in apt and food expenses. I just got a different job at another school that pays $64k. Took about 5 years for all that.

Education has pretty poor entry level salaries, but advancement is pretty decent if you can move up the ranks quick enough.

Growing up low-income, there were not that many shows that I felt portrayed the type of environment I grew up in. I always assumed being poor was universal, but then I've learned there are different types of poor.

For instance, while I grew up in an environment as seen in both "Everybody Hates Chris" or "Hey Arnold", my wife grew up in an environment closer to "Shameless".

Just curious to see what shows represented your childhood or current situation (if any).

I know I missed a bunch of shows (particularly older ones) but I only had room for 10.

TopicWhy do low income people say vegetables and fruits are expensive?
Zanzenburger
08/30/18 3:42:59 PM

DoomSwell posted...
As a low income person myself, let me try to answer. TLDR in Bold.

Vegetables taste bad, but they're fine as a filler in stirfry; which is a "trick" we use to make meat into multiple meals. Thats just a bag of frozen vegs, fresh have the same problems as fruit...

Fruits aren't even a side dish, they're a light snack. They go bad quickly, which means you can't stock up if you only have gas/money/time to go shopping once a month. Sometimes you're limited to what a single store has because of transportation...

Junkfood can be incredibly cheap (most food the dollar store carries) and can be very filling. Plus it has a shelf life of forever; you can spare some pocket money to stock up for months where your AC or Heating bills cut into your normal food budget. lose a job, pop a tire, at least you're not hungry.

Meat is expensive but worth it when we do. What we actually buy a lot of are canned food like corn beef hash and pasta like mac & cheese or ramen. We also get a lot of chips to go with sandwiches and burgers.

I came in to post this. Glad someone already did. While I have the luxury of living a middle class lifestyle now, I grew up in poverty and I saw all the tricks my mom tried to keep our family fed.

The biggest point I'll make is that fruits and vegetables are expensive because it is hard to stock up on them, as mentioned. You can buy a can of tuna and that will last you forever but buy some bananas and they won't last you till next weekend. Poor folk don't have the luxury to gamble with their food that way.

And grocery trips are a planned expedition. We would go grocery shopping once a month (sometimes twice if we were lucky) and had to survive off of whatever we purchased. This encourages buy packaged foods.

I feel like the Minions movie qualifies. Take the most obnoxious part of the Despicable Me movies and give them their own movie.

Not a movie, but I feel like the main plot driving Stranger Things Season 2 was a direct result of the backlash over how carelessly they glossed over Barb's death in Season 1.

Also the entire premise of Sausage party seems to make fun of the fact that most movies with anthropomorphic objects and creatures tend to ignore some harsh realities about existing in such a state.

For one thing, safety laws wouldn't let children be janitors for the same reason teachers can't be janitors. There's state and federal regulations about biological contamination training that has to be had to clean things such as blood, mucus, or other bodily functions. You'd be surprised if you saw how often you have kids bleeding in schools or throwing up in hallways. Janitors also deal with dangerous chemicals and do light work in maintenance rooms such as with boilers, heaters, water lines, and electrical closets.

Do you know the amount of liability involved with having children working on those things? Most people seem to be under the impression that janitorial work is just mopping, sweeping, and taking out trash. Budget cuts have forced those jobs to become more jack-of-all-trades. It's why in many schools even teachers are discouraged from doing janitorial duties outside their own classrooms.

It's silly, and thus more disarming for the viewer.

Natural smiles are hard to pull off on camera, and look very awkward if not done right. Kinda like what this guy said:

The23rdMagus posted...
I don't get this. I get scolded to show teeth when I smile, or open my mouth a little. ("I AM smiling...") How do people do this without the Wild And Craaaaazy Guys act?

Wait, that's probably all it is.

Some people just struggle to smile "correctly" either due to the shape of their face (i.e. smaller mouth) or just lack of practice smiling in public.

Back when I was a TV weatherman, we had smile training. We had to practice on camera and in front of our classmates to create a smile that looked inviting and natural/not forced. Very few people can do that naturally. It takes practice. The open mouth look is kind of a crutch. It's an easy way to move away from the "awkward half-smile" look without much effort. It looks ridiculous when you make a collage of them like shown above, but individually, it's more pleasing to look at than an awkward attempt at a forced smile.

Someone said it best: it's the male version of duckface.

FYI: People with smaller mouths have a harder time pulling off a good smile because their muscles don't expand enough to make something that looks genuine. My wife has this problem. With me, my biggest problem in learning to smile was not showing my gumline when I smiled as I have large gums.

It's really all about practice.

It depends what your goals are in life.

My goals in life are to create. Create and multiply. Not necessarily talking about kids (though that's in my plan), but I like to invest in various endeavors. I've started businesses, published books, and want to continue to do stuff like that. I want to build a nonprofit, a corporation, etc. I like doing impactful work that furthers my interests. I don't think I'll ever "retire" since I plan to work until the day I die. The difference is I want to have enough passive income on the side that I don't have to work to pay bills. The work I do is on my terms doing what I want to do.

As long as I keep myself healthy so I'm not ill at retirement age, I want to to keep doing what I'm doing well into my 90s.
