Oh goody, we're back here.

Chapter 2, eh? If this is how long one chapter is, I'm in for the long haul, aren't I?

And all of these new units know nothing, they're only slightly higher leveled and have slightly more HP. Glad they just handed them out to me.

This looks to be a little too easy so far. Guess they're just handing out free EXP to give the new units some levels. At least it's justified in-story, so I appreciate that.

Yay, we get the OP bullshit that Wiegraf had.

...did I just get softlocked? One of my units is charmed, but they're not moving at all.

Here is some noob advice if you want to better understand the mechanics of the game - [Spoiler tag is just in case you want to play with no advice]

Faith = Anything magical like how much you heal, how much damage you dish out and take with Black Magic, and how often a Status Effect will effect you. Low Faith you will be healed for less, Haste and Protect will miss you more often, you will do less damage with spells, but you also take less damage from spells, and there is a less of a chance you're get a debuff placed on you

Brave = Reaction %. Ramza starts of with 70 Brave, so you have a 70% chance to use your Counter Tackle or something like Auto-Potion. Also effect some damage

Since you asked, hit Triangle and select AP to see the entire turn order. If you want to cast Fire and want to see when it will go off, highlight the spell and press Right. This will tell you want it will go off - RUtJKvN - This doesn't work for Jump, though. Fucking bastards!

Wait in place, you'll get your unit's turn quicker. This isn't the exact numbers, but just go with me. If you have 100 CT (Combat Time, you can see it blow MP. This is your turn bar) and you move and attack, it will go to 0 CT. If you just Attack and don't Move, this number will only go to 25 CT, meaning you'll get that unit's turn quicker.

I'm sure you know this already, but attacking from the Front is harder than hitting from from the sides. You don't get the extra AC from Shields if you're attacked from behind or the side.

Females are better units because you get a tiny bit more boost from the other gender, and you fight mostly male units. Also, Dancer is much better than Bard

Even though they're great units, don't roll with a team full of Ninjas that have Barefist, lol

Thanks. I am aware of some of this thanks to my playing A2, but the non-A2 explanations are very much appreciated.

Once again you are using open world games when Metal Gear Solid is a linear game. He explained the reason MGS is structured the way it is really well and you just hand wave it because you seem to not understand how it is meant to work.

The shrines in BOTW are just as linear as any other game. You're ignoring the substance of this example and focusing on technicalities that don't address the my actual argument.
Swagnificent119 posted...
You keep using this example and I can't tell if it is trolling or you really just don't have any idea what you're talking about.

But no, that's not how it works. MGS "mechanics" are present throughout the whole game, the "mechanics" are the basic stealth gameplay.

What you keep referring to as mechanics are actually stage/environment hazards (outside of the weird C4 mechanic you have an obsession over).

And you keep using the example of "What if this one enemy only showed up in one place throughout the whole game, that's what MGS does!"

But it doesn't, because enemy units and stage hazards are different elements with different functions in the gameplay.

You're giving an arbitrary definition to "mechanics" to ignore my point. Call them whatever you want, they're still parts of the game with lots of potential to make the gameplay interesting that goes completely untapped throughout the entirety of MGS1, only being used once or twice at most. Search lights, the Nikita, snow, puddles, C4, wolves, poison gas (to an extent), and moving underwater, just to name a few, are all very underutilized. Arbitrarily define them as not being mechanics doesn't make this not true.

Like, I really can't stress enough that MGS is meant to be a linear game and you're looking at it as if it is or should be an open world game.

It's best to view each area as a stage, and thus, each stage has it's own thing.

Dock is the puddles
Helipad is snow and searchlight
Tank Hanger is noise floor
Armory is fall away floors and false walls
Nuke Storage is item restriction
B1 is guard search while staying hidden
B2 is dealing with gas and using the nikita
Tower is a combination of sniping sections, action evasion, rappelling and using the stinger
And then Fernace and Warehouse And Hanger are the Pal Key things.

Each stage presents a new thing to deal with, where as an open world would build upon existing things.

That's not how anything works. You can still build on previous concepts with a linear progression. Imagine if, just for example, the Stasis shrine in Breath of the Wild consisted entirely of stopping the spinning platform, and then the game never touched it again, or if Resident Evil 4 only had 1 Plaga in the entire game and it was in a room by itself. That's what MGS does with basically all of its mechanics.

So you played on Easy. Gotcha.

I played on Normal. Maybe I did interact with him, but every guard's dead in 3 shots, so he's not exactly an obstacle. Twin Snakes, on the other hand, with its 4 guards, actually challenged me quite a bit, especially since I ran out of M9 ammo halfway through. Wet footprints still had zero impact, though.

It's half and half, really. Most non-stealth sections only have one possible way through, which corresponds to using one item (cigarettes, C4, the Nikita, etc.). Most bosses are only damaged by one weapon (grenades, the sniper rifle, the Stinger, etc.); it's up to you to figure out what, in both cases. Plus, MGS almost completely drops the stealth gameplay once you enter the first tower.

wrong.

the codec literally tells you what to do every time .

Okay, so it's half stealth, half a puzzle that gives you its solution.

Wouldn't this be a complaint about every Metal Gear Solid game?

Metal Gear Solid 2 never really tests you mechanically like the VR Missions in Substance does

Metal Gear Solid 3 is loaded with useless weapons you are never required to use, multiply that by 10 for MGS4.

Metal Gear Solid V literally penalizes you for using most of the stuff in the game.

Yes, that's a substantive criticism of 2. 3, on the other hand, gives you all sorts of wacky shit you're not required to use, but can help you immensely in progression if you know how to use them. Even so, 3's progression isn't nearly as item-based as that of 1 or 2, so it hurts a lot more when you're given (or have to backtrack to get) a new item only for it not to be used beyond the surface level. Same goes for 4. Haven't played V (though it's in my Steam Library), so I can't speak for it.

Blame that on Konami of America. I'm pretty sure most of the international versions had VR Missions bundled with the main game minus maybe the ninja missions.

VR Missions was released a whole year after the original.

I said "as a game". The game likes to one-off a lot of its mechanics and throw them away, never to expand upon them again. The story is a different story (although the voice acting hasn't exactly aged amazingly either), but it never tests you mechanically like VR Missions does. The game has so much it could do with its systems but just decides to do nothing with them.

LET ME BE CLEAR: MGS is a very enjoyable experience (minus the backtracking). I'm just saying that it could have been so much more because it had the systems in place to test the player's usage of weapons more, but it just never did, and it's lackluster in that regard as a result.

whats your party like?

Everyone except for me is level 5; I'm currently level 6. Pretty much everyone has black magic and time magic down, and I've additionally got a monk, knight, and white mage on deck. I feel severely underleveled right now, as I'm fighting level 9 and 10 enemies.

Anonymity means never having to admit you were wrong.

Also means that no mod who isn't Error has to deal with constant harassment.

Hard light is impossible, so

Did you ever watch Yugioh past the first season?

i know what a duel disk is, obviously, i'm a huge yugioh fan, but i've never heard of a dual disk
