TC, all art will have critics. Always. Even if you finished the book, published it, and it becomes a success. There will still be people who trash it.

You can't internalize it. You will never do something that will silence all naysayers, no matter how well done it is.

No one on CE matters. To you anyway. Just get offline and start writing.

TopicWhy do liberals like illegal immigration?
BlameAnesthesia

Troll topic aside, liberals don't "like" illegal immigration. It's about immigration reform. Most sensible liberals don't believe in a true open border, but the current immigration process is bloated, biased, and leaves much to be desired.

The key example are dream act students. Despite the crimes of the parents, the adolescents who came along have spent more of their formative years in this country and received a public education here. They were too young to remember their "home country" and culturally they are American.

To allow them the resources to attend higher education and obtain skilled jobs means that child can be a tax-paying member of society rather than continuing to live on the fringe and not "paying back."

This doesn't just have to be given to them. There could be requirements like those entering the medical field to provide a commitment to practicing in underserved areas. Or military tours, etc.

This way we aren't squandering talent and we aren't punishing children for something outside of their control.

Did you know about the personality disorder from the beginning?

More or less. She had a very difficult childhood, but I didn't really see any red flags in the first 3 years of our relationship. She had some struggles with depression and suicidal ideation at seemingly random times, but we've always worked through it. I also felt that she never "split" me, a common symptom in BPD patients. She definitely had the impulsivity, but that was something I valued in her. We went on several vacations over the years spontaneously that were absolute adventures. So back when we had all the time in the world as college students, we had a great life. I also have a background in psych, so I'm a very patient and understanding person, especially for these types of things. So the stability for her was something that was new to her and she showered me with so much love and affection for years because of it.

But she has a difficult time putting healthy boundaries with people she meets, emotionally. To her, it was always an insistence that "she knew where she was emotionally" so when we spent most of our time together, this wasn't an issue. When I was consumed by med school, her lack of boundaries led to some men in her life to seriously pursue her. Eventually it became this gradual slide where I felt increasing distance from her until eventually I discovered she was having an affair with her research PI/former professor who was twice her age.

Towards the end/a bit before the affair there was an increasing unease in her in that she was discovering feelings for women as well and that she was bi. We were in the process of working through these and I was trying to discover where I was comfortable in her exploring these seeing as she didn't really come to terms with it until after we were married. Then there were talks of polyamory.

Eventually I just sort of realized that these are just manifestations of her illness. Sexual promiscuity is a feature of BPD, and after some time I simply wasn't enough for her. After some time, the constraints of a marriage got to her. She has developed a genuine belief that no one person can meet all of one's needs, so she thinks the logical conclusion is to be in multiple relationships.

I'll never get romantically involved with someone with BPD again. I think on some level I was arrogant enough to think that I could "fix it." That providing that stable unconditional love would eventually make it "go into remission."

What caused the divorce

Long, long story. The spark notes version is a combination of having a significant other with borderline personality disorder and the unholy demands of medical school. During the hardest two years of med school, I wasn't able to put in as much into the relationship relative to the first few years we were together. This led to a growing distance that culminated in her having an affair.

Become comfortable with myself again.

Been married for 4 years (together for 7). Getting divorced. Entering single life in my late 20s is going to be an adjustment. I've been so used to having a partner that it's simply uncomfortable being alone. This year will be one of reappraisal--of what I want out of my life and what type of person I want to be, rather than the person I was when I was in a commitment that I thought was going to endure the rest of my life.

Also I become a doctor this year, so this will be a big year in terms of learning how to fill those shoes.

A bachelor's in psychology is not adequate for work within the field. Many people equate psych with mental health/illness. That's only a sliver of the umbrella of psychology. A psychology degree has intrinsic value in terms of entrepreneurs or if your work can benefit from a scientific view on behavior.

In terms of job opportunities, it will help you get hired at places that simply look for a bachelor's level of education. The value the degree bestows requires application of it's knowledge; it's not an assembly line into a related line of work.

I'm about to become a physician and I'm glad I majored in psychology during my undergrad as it helps with how I interact with both patients and colleagues. I would never stay at just the bachelor's level with psych though. I'm also biased in the bachelor's of science route as opposed to arts. The former will emphasize more harder sciences into your education and a college-level understanding of biology, chemistry, and physics really helps ground one's education in psychology when you can really view behavior in terms of mechanisms and as emergent phenomena deriving from biology and chemistry.

DA:I is kind of unique in that it had a single-player MMO sandbox feel, but the pacing is definitely awkward. You can skip certain zones entirely if you just play the main story line, but if you delve into all the game's content, you over level fairly quickly.

In terms of depthness of lore, Witcher 3 is a good option. Open-world, really story driven, the side-quests are actually engaging for the most part.

If you're just looking for a fantasy setting action RPG, Dragon's Dogma can scratch that itch.

I actually take some issue with the overall meta. There are a lot of mobility perks, which make LMGs handle almost like an SMG. But they have better range, recoil, and you never have to reload.

All the specialists are essentially overpowered. Their abilities are basically guaranteed cheese kills.

It makes for a very neutered experience where everyone gets kills and "participates", but really puts a ceiling on those matches where you personally dominate.

A decent bit of the map rotation is just older recycled black ops maps. So it's nostalgic, but after that feeling is over it just comes off as lazy.

I like it more than WWII, but that isn't saying much. I also can't stand Blackout. It's a giant campfest and the twitch nature of CoD doesn't translate to battle royale very well. Zombies seems solid, but I haven't played much of it.

I understand the criticisms. I only played vanilla Destiny 1, so moving onto 2 felt fresh and improved. Allegedly, the expansions in D1 improved the game a lot, so to most who played the expansions felt like D2 was a downgrade in terms of content.

While the expectation that vanilla D2 somehow surpass D1 with years of content additions was a bit naive, I can understand their frustrations because why not just continue adding to the D1 platform? Designing an entirely new game was most certainly a business decision.

D2 as a stand alone game provided enough content for your typical AAA title. But to fans of the first title, it felt more like a $60 expansion pack.

I hear the opinions of the game are more favorable now with this recent expansion. I imagine if there is ever a D3, there will be a repeat of history. D3 content won't match what D2 developed into over the years and you'll get more disgruntled fans, but the company will have made their money.

I think Jon is the most virtuous. People born into birthright tend to be pricks, or otherwise are ignorant to the plights of the masses.

Jon was raised by a very fair and noble house, but was also an outsider, and his birthright hidden from him. This necessarily humbled him relative to the rest of Westerosi elite. He willingly chose an option of duty and service most only choose out of necessity after committing crimes. He suffered through a hard path and became a natural leader as a result of those experiences.

None of his current standing is by choice. He does not seek power, and if anything, shirks it. He has all the good virtues and qualities of Ned, with the addition of having the fire of Targaryen blood. In other words, he is a more assertive Stark, or a more tempered Targaryen (depending on your point of view). It's the perfect blend of traits and why the series is "A song of ice and fire." He is the only logical ruler of Westeros.

Spending $2 on a single ticket for the entertainment value given a historically high jackpot is hardly the worst somebody could do. It's a short, fun craze for people to distract us from our lives. I didn't like bloodborne my first attempt at a playthrough, but like a year later I tried it again (after having finished the rest of the souls games) and loved it.

Ultimately if you are a fan of the souls genre, the natural progression is you evolve past shields and play more and more obscure builds. You try and "git gud" using literally anything and take it as a challenge. Bloodborne just happened to be a game that had that philosophy in mind from the get go because From Software knew people just turtle behind shields as an easy way out.

Actually give bloodborne a chance and get good at being aggressive. Then go back to any of the DS series and you'll have so much more fun doing obscure builds rather than going a quality build with sword and shield.

"Real world" is such a weird euphemism.

It acknowledges the world isn't "fair" and no one really "has your back" (except maybe if you're born into money). It emphasizes your own agency in "making it", whilst de-emphasizing luck/chance that also factors in to one's "hard work" when it comes to success. And it passively accepts the current state of affairs rather than opening up a possibility that attempts to change that status quo.

So older people who are still "stuck" in life use it to rationalize away why life is hard, and older people who are successful use it to ignore what role chance played in their success.

Basically it means hard work can lead to success, but not always.

A lot of places require the winning announcement to be public, so people would know. Even if people in your life didn't solicit you (they would), you'd get swaths of letters, bombarded online, and stalkers who run into you asking for hand outs.

You pretty much have to go the lawyer route to set up a trust to accept the winnings in order to remain somewhat anonymous. And also you wouldn't want to just stick it in a single bank. Banks are only insured a couple hundred thousand dollars. So you'd need countless of accounts. Most people with that kind of capital would have to put it in investments, treasuries, etc.

It would actually be extremely difficult to just "stick it in the bank and go back to work."

Most likely heading towards divorce with my wife, who happens to have borderline personality disorder.

I just got done watching episode 5 with the heist of the lost book chapter. That encounter at the end where she holds Owen up at gunpoint is the perfect metaphor to what it's like being with someone with borderline. Owen's response of "you didn't need the gun" was spot on too, along with his acknowledgement of how easy it is to get absorbed with someone with borderline, despite it's toxicity.

I had my suspicions from previous episodes (the scars on her back were a big give-away). Owen is obviously a paranoid schizophrenic, but early in the series I saw a lot of my wife in Annie.

So that scene with the debriefing and the way she answered the questions, only to get that print out of her diagnosis. Just hit me like a ton of bricks. I never really perceived or attributed my wife too much to her borderline. People are obviously more dynamic than a diagnosis, and I've always seen her stable otherwise.

But hindsight is 20/20 and the more I reflect, the more I see how that borderline dynamic contributed to the deterioration of it all, without going into too much detail. And the stress of divorce (myself included in instigating due to the grief) exacerbates it to a point where it's more obvious.

So yeah, I'm impressed with this show. A lot of attention to detail and it's eerily relatable to me right now.

You could use someone else to deliver that...."message", but any time you do you risk leaking the information, the person turning on you, etc. It's too high risk with someone as important as the presumed person in the prophecy.

Harry had ancient magical protection at his aunt's house due to his mother's sacrifice. Even Voldemort wouldn't have a way around it. As powerful as Dumbledore is, keeping Harry with him would be the more dangerous route. Also, in some way I think Dumbledore almost preferred it that way. He probably saw his upbringing as humbling and it was important to keep him sheltered from the wizarding world during his childhood for reasons that are not so obvious.

Imagine believing TC actually posts on CE while being an ER Physician on duty

First off, medicine is a language. There is a way physicians communicate that your armchair "doctor" can't replicate. So it's pretty easy to tell here who is the real deal or not. Second, if you've spent any real time working in an ED you'd understand it's not necessarily always go-go-go. There are definitely lulls, especially on overnight shifts. Or sometimes your hospital is so full upstairs that the ED goes on what is called "diversion" whereby any new patient is just walk-ins and not by ambulance. I've spent several hours with nothing going on before. Third, she's not an ED doc, but hospitalists admit patients from the ED, therefore they are aware enough to discuss the patient's course prior to being admitted.

ImTheMacheteGuy posted...
A hospitalist is someone who... hospitals? >_> (I actually don't know. I've only ever seen the title when you've mentioned it here and I haven't bothered to google it)

A hospitalist usually refers to an internal medicine doctor who attends over inpatients in the hospital (in contrast to outpatient clinic). It can also refer to pediatricians or family docs who also attend inpatients.

Best example--Dr. Cox and J.D. (once he finished his residency) from the show Scrubs were both hospitalists.
