It is after midnight there now. There were issues with delays in certain areas and it's not clear if everyone has finished voting. There hasn't been any widespread violence, but there was some kind of altercation somewhere where 2 people were killed.

It's going to apparently take a few days before the results come in so sadly we won't get news on the results tonight.

No, except for maybe Shadary (#3), but instead of capitalism he prefers a kleptocracy where the state just steals from the people to feed the regime's greed, and in return the people receive nothing.

Fayulu (#1) and Tshisekedi (#2) will not be anti-capitalist. They are too smart for that.

If he wins, it's basically guaranteed to be the result of a fraudulent election. The most recent poll put him at 19% support.

if i were betting i'd bet he will win.

I don't know, the fact that his victory would mean an obviously rigged election could mean that the Kabila regime might not go through with it.

Look at how big these crowds are. This was a campaign rally for Fayulu. If the elections are rigged, the people will take to the streets. The security forces may not be able to contain it.

On December 30th 2018, the Congolese will go to the polls to vote in a presidential election.

This election was originally supposed to take place more than two years ago in December 2016. It was then delayed to December 2017, and then again to December 2018. It was actually going to take place on the 23rd but then the electoral commission had to delay it for another week because they supposedly were not ready.

In other unfortunate news, the regime has announced that several provinces in the eastern part of the country will not be able to participate in this election due to the ebola outbreak and other ongoing violence in those provinces. Needless to say, the people in those provinces are furious and we are likely to see some major rioting in those areas tomorrow as the rest of the country goes to vote.

There are many candidates running, but three that stand out

1) Frontrunner Martin Fayulu. He spent 20 years working at ExxonMobil, gradually working his way up to Managing Director before eventually leaving the company. The most recent poll put him at 47% support.

ezZYYBF

2) Felix Tshisekedi is in second place in the polls. His main claim to fame is being the son of the famous Congolese politician tienne Tshisekedi who recently passed away. The most recent poll put him at 24% support.

W7Mluf3

3) Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary. He is running as the establishment candidate, having been endorsed by current leader (dictator) Joseph Kabila. He has been performing poorly in polls that have been taken, but it is feared that the regime will try to rig the elections in his favor. If he wins, it's basically guaranteed to be the result of a fraudulent election. The most recent poll put him at 19% support.

9dvaoxK

This election is a huge crossroads for the future of the country. It stands a chance at being the first peaceful transfer of power since the country's independence in 1960. For the first time in almost 60 years, the country could have a leader who is actually trying to improve the country instead of just being a kleptocratic dictator who steals from the people to enrich himself and his cronies. Alternatively, this could end up being a rigged election that sparks a massive violent revolt against the regime. If this happens, we will likely see bloodshed on an unimaginable scale.

My heart goes out to the Congolese people. This has the potential to be a pivotal turning point in the history of their country. I hope for the best.

The ranking so far is:

1. Sorcerer
2. Sage
3. Warlock
4/5. Wizard/Necromancer
6. Witch
7. Mage

Sorcerer has won by a pretty clear margin at this point. It's also the one I think is the most powerful. Another interesting takeaway is that Sage has clearly beaten out both Wizard and Mage. Warlock also did much better than I thought it would.

[The Zimbabwean] Government has pledged 2000ha to the African Union for the Wakanda One village to be shared by Zimbabwe and Zambia as part of joint development efforts across Southern Africa.

Wakanda One village is a concept that seeks to rope in Africans living in the Diaspora in spearheading development at identified sites on the continent.

The pledge comes in handy in the countrys re-engagement efforts where it also seeks to court Zimbabweans in the Diaspora to contribute to the nations economic turnaround.

President Mnangagwa has also set an ambitious target to turn Zimbabwe into an upper middle-class economy by 2030 with tourism, agriculture and mining driving the vision.

In an interview during the inaugural Intra African Trade Fair, which ended on Monday this week in Cairo, Egypt, African Union Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the US, Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao, confirmed President Mnangagwas pledge recently.

I met His Excellency President Mnanagwa recently and he offered us 2000ha for the regional Wakanda One in Victoria Falls.
The offer also comes in when the Zambian Government has also offered some land across the river in Livingstone. So we are looking at building the village straggling the border between the countries, she said.

Zambia has offered 132ha for the project.

The Wakanda One village concept expresses a desire by African leaders for all people of African descent the Diaspora to return home and participate in building the continent.

Wakanda One the building of African Centres of Excellence across Africa is looking at building five centres, one in each region, which serve as growth nods for each region which should have downstream benefits for the population.

It will provide state of the art healthcare facilities using advanced technology and onsite pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Okay, but it seems silly to go after a historian. It's not like our political leaders call up a bunch of historians and ask them for advice on critical foreign policy issues.

We barely stuck our foot into Syria. It really is not comparable to either Iraq or Afghanistan, which both involved regime change and nation building. People are vastly overestimating just how committed we ever were to Syria.

Between Afghanistan and Iraq, Iraq is the one that actually worked out better. They control virtually 100% of their territory now, and we are just providing a small amount of training/assistance. There are definitely concerns about things like the influence of the Iranian militias, but it's not a warzone like it was a few years ago.

In Afghanistan, the government only controls like 50-60% of the territory maximum. It's a much more dire situation. It still is a real warzone.

Both had different objectives though didnt they?
Afghanistan was about preventing the taliban from harbouring the terrorists that helped plan 9/11. Iraq was about regime change.

Yes, but Afghanistan also involved a regime change. Before we went in, the Taliban were running the government. It was officially the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

We overthrew that government and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan was put in its place, along with a constitution and an electoral framework whatnot. That new government is now trying to stay in power without being overrun by the Taliban (and other groups).

How come the US seemed to be undermining their own agenda by agreeing to talk to the taliban?

We're not undermining our own agenda. The hope is that peace talks could lead to some kind of agreement. The Afghan government has said that whatever happens, the Taliban must follow the constitution, and the Taliban say that they will never recognize the constitution because it is un-Islamic, so it's not likely that these peace talks will actually accomplish anything. Still though, better to have an open dialogue I guess.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-46626115

Why did Mattis resign then? He's put up with so many of Trump's boneheaded decisions that if this was inconsequential, he'd have shrugged it off.

The BBC article underestimates the work that still remains to be done to defeat ISIS and doesn't put serious weight on Turkey's ambitions to wipe out the Kurds.
