I remember a few years ago a lot of California was experiencing a similar problem, and eventually heavy rains roared in and took care of it. I remember Sacramento and the big lake there before and after the drought. Huge difference.

Hopefully they figure out a way to manage the Colorado river better. With advances in agriculture (specifically using machine learning and autonomous farming tools for more dense farming and less water waste) I'm optimistic that this challenge will be resolved.

Actually, Arizona has a lot of ground water and can handle itself fine, it's judt that Phoenix is growing too fast to sustain it.

I live in Phoenix, I've intentionally not put down any permanent roots here.

Extremely energy inefficient way of sourcing water. The Colorado River was already supplying an unfathomable amount of clean water AND a unfathomable amount of energy. Desalination plants are like slamming on the accelerator will the car is shifted in reverse.

Hmm, well make the plants be hybrid hydro power stations, use solar panels and windmills or make them nuclear.

Do you wanna drink river water with animal pee forever?

I would rather exploit and preserve the most accesible renewable resources first, so yes. It's simply a matter of economics.

This appears to be too serious and not controversial enough for CE to argue about.

This does seem very concerning and I am surprised this is not being shared more in the media. I do wonder what our (as in, society's) back up plan is for when we ever reach critical levels of water shortage. How do they decide who gets the water? I'm hoping they'll find a solution but things like this make me wonder.

Just fear mongering. Other sources say we are good for years to come. They are planning now for water alternatives in 2040 when it's expected to be more of a serious issue. This is literally the last thing on my mind as a Las Vegan.
