I don't know if I'd call WW the single best Zelda game, but it's #2 or #3 at absolute lowest. It definitely has the best story and characters, tons of memorable moments, and some excellent boss fights. It also has some of the most forgettable dungeons in the series (Tower of the Gods is pretty good, but that's it). I personally enjoyed the sailing aspect and vastness of the world, but I can understand why it's divisive.

Annie even admits towards the latter end of S3 that she's just infatuated with Jeff because he's pretty much the Everest of a woman wanting to turn a bastard into a good guy.

Becuase he's an Unsent who Hades pulled out of the Underworld, so his KH arc actually ties into his FFX arc. Prior to this, the closest tie to their source material that the FF characters had was that Tidus and Wakka...um, spent some time on a beach in their game?

I'm sure one of the FFT masters has a build that makes full devastating use of his special class, but with my limited brainpower I never figured out how to make him work.

No offense, but the Japanese original is trash if that's the case. I wouldn't pay money for it again (I gifted my copy to a friend), but someday I wouldn't mind the opportunity to give the DS version another chance and see if my opinion of it improves.

The god-awful retranslation absolutely killed it for me, sucking all the life out of the characters and needlessly switching weapon names over to Final Fantasy equivalents (and before you think me a biased purist, I actually quite liked the retranslation on the GBA FF 6, in spite of such classic handles as Atma and my namesake Master Pug getting unceremoniously dumped into the dustbin of history). I didn't stick with the DS version long enough to make it to the postgame content (which is rumored to be good), but the new side dungeon that has you slogging back and forth between Prehistory and Medieval to build a rope bridge or some shit was the worst kind of tedium, to the point where I dropped that halfway through as well.

No. If it took 12 years to make it was probably in development hell. Also I never played the side titles and the story is confusing af. I have no desire to play a bunch of other games to understand that garbage.

I'm with you. It especially demotivates me when people say certain spinoffs are just as important as the numbered titles. It's a shame as it was always a pretty cool crossover.

just because a game isnt numbered doesnt mean its a spinoff.

If it looks like a spinoff, sounds like a spinoff, plays like a spinoff, and is marketed like a spinoff, it is no one's fault other than the developers that it is perceived as a spinoff. Squeenix chose to let Nomura slap a black leather longcoat on everything that moves and scatter the story over half a dozen side games instead of getting off their asses and keeping the numbered series moving, and I think they'll be in for a rude awakening when they expect the non-hardcore fanbase to sit through a recap vid and plug themselves back into the story; this is even worse imo than FF XIII expecting you to care about the plot by reading a bunch of menu-based cliff notes to get immersed in the narrative when it can't be bothered to weave exposition naturally. KH3 should at the very least get critically savaged for the hole it's dug itself into; I guess I don't wish financial failure on the game, but if it happened, it would be deserved.

Because it's a series I originally loved that arguably elevated the concept of fanfiction, before it rapidly and irredeemably devolved into regular fanfiction. Among other reasons that I won't really get into because I really have lost all love for the franchise.

So I take that back, I guess I don't really have a strong stake in seeing KH3 bomb apart from a detached sense of catharsis. On the other hand I should have been more invested in seeing '76 bomb, since I have a more vested interest in the future of the Fallout and ES series. KH, FF and Squeenix have been lost causes for awhile now.

Erm, no. Excellent game, but...

- too one-note in tonal variety. Consistency is good and a game doesn't have to be as off-the-wall as SotN to be fun, but Super Metroid had very well-defined shifts between zones in terms of music, art style, and vibe. Hollow Knight has somber dark tunnels, somber dark mossy cave, somber dark rainy city, etc.

- past the halfway point of the game, the devs got in the bad habit of taking the sadism of their boss fights and platforming challenges one step past the point of enjoyability, to the point where I lost interest in finishing the game right at the end because I simply didn't have any patience left for it.

- people have complained for years about metroidvania games hiding cool shit behind nondescript breakable walls. Hollow Knight doubles down majorly on this, hiding things far more unique than missile tanks behind thoroughly unremarkable walls.
