He was built up to be the best fighter ever, then a handful of Sons of the Harpy take him out in like ten seconds. D&D wanted a shocking death so they chose Selmy. The actor (who was one of the few that actually read the whole series of books) told them his character should still be alive, it fueled their drive to kill him off sooner. There was a convention or something where they tell the story but don't name drop who it was. Pretty big oversight that Sandor was in a city engulfed by fire and yet never had to confront his crippling fear of it, considering this was a detail that the show pushed so heavily even up to just two episodes ago. It was mildly poetic that he sacrificed himself to destroy his brother in a lake a fire, but it would have been better if he'd more obviously had to finally confront and overcome that fear to do it (say, there was a wall of fire visible to Sandor behind Gregor, Sandor gets a familiar yet momentarily lapse of paralytic fear, and then finally breaks through it and pushes both of them into it). I think that was the point. He fought the undead and was surrounded by fire to save this little girl who he helped mentor and become her surrogate father. And then he could see what a woman she had became. He did his part for Arya/humanity. He was a changed person. He was no longer the old Hound but a new person. An actual person. And he was finally going to stand up to his fears (fire/The Mountain). Qyburn and Cersei were friends though. As much as either character can have a friend at least. She's the only one who accepts him and supports his bat shit craziness. And vice versa. If you look at all their scenes together, Cersei's tone in her voice is much softer and friendlier than with anyone else. Maybe even more than Jamie at times.
