Its a guinea pig corset to help her achieve that hourglass figure. Okay, its really just a roll of tape. It was sitting there with Guin and I held a treat on the other side, so she crawled into it lol

Just came across this while looking through some old pics. Guin was still a little thing and small enough to burrow into my pocket

Im convinced she would do it again, if you let her.

I know Teddie might very well try, even if she wont really fit... Really hard to get her out again, if shes trying to hide in a space she cant do a 180 in.

Yeah, shed probably try but I dont think she would really fit in my pocket anymore lol. And it is a pain to pull them out of spaces they cant turn around in.

So I got a guinea pig bonding question for yall.

I got two male guinea pigs both around 5months old houses together but separated by a divider. I did that because Tuxedo is a little bit younger than Brownie. My mom suggested I put both of them on my bed to play with them. I did. And it was a disaster.

I put Tuxedo on my bed first because he was easier to grab then I picked up Brownie and placed him on my bed. Almost as soon as I did that they started sniffing each other then a fight broke out. They became a big flurry of thrashing and jumping up and down biting. I didnt even know guinea pigs could do that. I thought they would be cool since Ive seen them lay close to each other along the divider.

Im just wondering if this is normal and how to get them to get along.

Sucks that they fought. You had the right idea trying to physically introduce them to each other on a neutral ground, rather than in one of their cages which could be perceived as territory. However I wonder if what you saw was just standard dominance behavior, as SuperVegito mentioned. This can be normal, especially as theyre first introduced and working out their pecking order. There can be chattering, posturing, mounting, ear nipping, and so on that is normal and not cause for much concern.

Id take a minute to read this article, especially the part about guinea pig body language. What you perceived as a fight may not have been a real one at all. Its got a lot of other good tips about introducing your piggies.

I love how they purr like cats when they're happy and my old one used to acknowledge me when I walked in the room.

I had one that lived for like 5 or 6 years iirc. She was sweet but I kind of neglected her as a kid, like I didn't change her water or food as often as I should have etc. When she died I felt guilty for a long time but I think overall she had a good life

5-6 years is on the high end for guinea pigs, so she had to have been healthy.

Yeah, for all the guinea pigs Ive had 4 or 5 years seems to be around the average lifespan. A lot of sources say 5-8 but that seems a bit high in my experience. Then again for a long time I didnt realize I wasn't giving my pigs the proper diet (not enough hay), so that may have been a factor.

Hah, I never thought about that. Funny thing is Guin actually loves those cat treats. I give her tiny pieces of lots of things to try, interestingly enough she goes crazy for beef jerky.

I dont think thats a good idea, considering guinea pigs are carnivores...

True, I would never give her any significant amount of jerky. Just two or three little bites about the size of the tip of a pen every once in a blue moon. Who knows why she loves it so much, but she starts sniffing like crazy whenever theres an open bag nearby. It cracks me up.

Baby guinea pigs (even if close to 2 months old) are tiny yet adorable.

Mine the day i got them was very flighty. Teddie even tried to jump off mom when picking her out of the transporter the first time

Yeah, theyre almost all skittish at that age. Guin was actually relatively calm when I held her at the pet store, thats one of the reasons I chose her.

@M-Watcher it is the case that some guinea pigs are just less social than others. Of the two I have now, one is much more personable than the other. Thats just how it goes. And thats hilarious that your puppy got in the cage, its too bad you didnt take a picture of that moment

Yeah, accidental injuries can happen even if the other animal isnt aggressive towards piggies. Ive read that you shouldnt house rabbits with guinea pigs because rabbits back legs are strong enough to easily hurt a guinea pig by mistake.

Oh btw to the people that told me that cats are cool with guinea pigs. Turns out you guys were right (at least so far).

My cat kinda just sits in front of their pen and watches them. He hasn't done anything shady (yet) but I'm also supervising him. I would never leave him alone with them though.

Be very careful, you can let them interact with cats but only while supervised at all times. A while back I had a guinea pig who managed to chew her way out of her cage, and my roommates cat attacked her and she ended up losing an eye. It was pretty awful

To my knowledge thats not a positive sound.

I dont know man, most of the pigs Ive had make that purring sound when theyre relaxed and being petted. Its very similar to noises they make when startled or annoyed, but it differs a bit in tone and length. Thats been my experience, anyway.

The purring noise they make when you pet them is my favorite animal noise.

If its purring thats something i think is a bad sign (IE i dont like this), but there is a comfortable grunting noise Teddie makes, that could be confused for purring.

And she only makes it when relaxed and petted.

My guinea pigs also make a purring or chortle sound while Im petting them. Its similar to the sound they make when theyre startled or annoyed, but not quite the same, and I can also tell from their body language that theyre relaxed and happy.

Very cute piggies, Im glad you posted. That stinks that Tuxedo has been skittish since the vet visit. Ive never had an issue like that so Im not sure what the best way to handle it is. Itll take some patience and gentle care to get Tuxedo comfortable again, but Im sure you can do it.

I love the pics @SuperVegito2487. The brown and orange one is my favorite, very cute piggie. Sorry to hear about the little one you recently lost. One of the only downsides to guinea pigs is their relatively short lifespan. Anyway, Im sure you took great care of her and gave her a good life.

Im also curious what kind of cage or housing you use for your pigs. I got a hutch for mine a little over a year ago, and its been fantastic. I just line the bottom with towels and plastic, and put a little paper-based bedding in the upstairs area. Its so nice and roomy compared to the old cage I had.

I worked for a pet store chain for about 7 years, and always tried to sway people into getting a guinea pig over a hamster. The return rate for hamsters was honestly shocking, over 50%, mostly due to bites. Guinea pigs overall make a much better pet and a biter is very rare.

Yeah, guinea pigs are so much better than hamsters and gerbils. Hamsters arent very affectionate and the ones my sisters had didnt even like being petted. Theyd try to escape the whole time and yeah, they bit too.

Id say theyre much better pets, though my experience with ferrets is limited. The ones Ive known were not friendly and smelled awful, lol

I had ferrets and rats growing up. My old lady had chinchillas. Neither of us had pigs.

My buddy does and they are always squeakin, but he loves em!

Thats odd, mine have always been pretty quiet. The most noise they make is when they hear rustling plastic because they associate that sound with getting treats.

Guinea pigs are the greatest small pets out there. Theyre inexpensive, easy to care for, and affectionate. With a little bit of handling they become very docile and amenable to petting. I have two guinea pigs at the moment, Guin and Peg.

RrTLkqk

This is Guin. Shes almost three and is super sweet. She likes chilling on my lap and will burrow into my shirt whenever the opportunity presents itself.

uuBaRtP

This is Peg standing up for a treat. Shes just over a year old. While not quite as personable as Guin, shes a nice piggie in her own right.

I know Ive seen a few others like @SuperVegito2487 @OffTempo @ManicPlumber77 and @RiderofHogs post about their guinea pigs on here before. Are there any other fans out there?
