I'm saying it someone who didn't know about the hacking found the Demi Lovato nude photos, why would it be immoral for them to look at them?
and where exactly was this under discussion? if you unwittingly see random images and don't know where they came from, that would probably not be immoral, but no one was talking about that.

Why would it be immoral if others looked at it, though? If somebody was curious and decided to look up Demi Lovato nude on google without knowing about the hacking, why would it be immoral? Because some actors have posed nude, or had nude scenes in movies before. So, it's not always a shock to see a celebrity nude. And maybe they wanted to know if they ever had a nude scene. And then they find those pics. So, why would it be immoral?
where the hell did "without knowing about the hacking" come from?

Yeah, because youve already started out with the intention of having someone hack (immoral) and distribute them to you (also immoral).

if theyre already out there and youre curious enough to look and not share it or make it a big deal, its not immoral IMO. Def somewhat questionable but not immoral
ok, if your friend hacked someone's phone, obtained images off of it, and then later randomly shared them with you, would it be immoral for you to "enjoy" them? (in this case you are aware of where they came from)

I think the act of paying someone to hack a phone would be the immoral thing. But you could probably say the same for the viewing it... for that purpose. As they used illegal means to obtain the photo. Where everybody else who just happened to see it on google would have found it "legally"...
it would be an immoral act *every time* you viewed them

we're not talking about legally, we're talking about morally

if you hired someone to hack it for you, obtained them, and then viewed them, the act of viewing them would be an immoral act (right?)

she'll never know how many people actually saw it

ok so you're saying that since it being on the internet is effectively *as if* the whole world has seen it, that it then doesn't matter whether or not one particular person views it, because the effective amount of harm done already included that view.

that seems to make some sense, but I don't think I like the idea that that can change the act of viewing it from an immoral one into a not-immoral one.

I've realized (I think) that I can audially hallucinate when between sleep and awake mode (though practically in awake mode which is what makes it so weird). I'll be mostly fully conscious dozing comfortably, and then think of something and then immediately hear it. it's kind of like how dreams work, but you actually *hear* the sound which is very confusing.

The main example I have is that I could legit hear a squirrel running on the roof. I imagined someone shooting it off my roof with a BB gun. And then seconds later heard the shot, heard it hit the squirrel, and heard the squirrel make a half-cartoon animal dying sound. I actually thought that it really had happened, but I've since assumed it must have been some kind of hallucination.

The other possibility it that you find out this picture is on the internet, and you can't get it removed because that's not how the internet works. No matter how many people see it, all you know is that it is there, and people can see it. Even if no one looks at it, you know it's there. It's not going to hurt you more every time someone looks at the picture, what hurts is that the picture is available for anyone to see.
ok thank you for actually posting something reasonable.

so, you're making a distinction between an image being viewed, and an image being made available for viewing.

I don't think that works because if an image is being made available for viewing and *no one sees it*, (and you know no one saw it), then no harm is done. harm is done by the actual (or potential) viewing.

what you're saying is the mob mentality thing again. you're saying that your one view has decreased to infinitesimal importance such that it can be considered effectively no longer immoral/harmful. you're diluting your immoral act. the question is, is this justified? is it indeed no longer immoral once it has reached a sufficient level of "saturation"? ("enough other people are doing this that it no longer matters if I do it too"?)

well let's see... if zero people see it, that would be completely relieving, because the amount of embarrassment would be zero. if exactly 1 person saw it, that would almost not even be embarrassing, except in association with that one person. if 100 people saw it, similarly it would be low embarrassment relative only to that 100 people. if literally everyone in the world saw it, that would be maximally humiliating. why the hell do I need to explain this?

Except you never stated why. The person isn't going to be more or less hurt because someone they don't know at all is looking at it or not. If it's someone they know personally, it's a different story, but someone completely random, it makes no difference whatsoever.
this was the issue I was getting at earlier. I think the only reason you can say "it makes no difference" is because of mob mentality: "everyone else is doing it so it doesn't matter if I do to".

pictures are hacked by someone else...
  • specifically for you; you obtain them and "use" them -> not ok (right?)
  • specifically for you and your friend, you obtain them and "use" them -> not ok (right?)
  • specifically for you and your friends, you obtain them and "use" them -> not ok (right?)
  • for everyone in your... town?, you obtain them and "use" them -> not ok? ok?
  • for everyone in the world, you obtain them and "use" them -> all of a sudden ok?
the size of the distribution gives the impression that the feeling of responsibility has been diluted down into insignificance, but that shouldn't change the *morality* of the act. (should it?)

There's nothing to disagree with. People have different moral compasses. Subjectivity is not objectivity.
morality is about rules that help groups succeed. such rules are objectively true. they objectively promote the success of groups. you can argue that they are partly subjective and partly objective, but the same can be said for most or all things. everything has a subjective component, because we can only observe it through our own perceptions; everything has an objective component since/if it exists. (probably exceptions somewhere.) but the notion that whatever you decide is moral is what is moral is false. moral rules promote the success of groups; anything else is not moral (or possibly amoral).

(personally I enjoy a good philosophically interesting conversation. this is something I'm not decided on and would have naively sided with you when I first entered the thread; I may yet given the right argument.)

you guys are conflating the concept of considering an act to be immoral oneself, and for "society"/everyone-else considering an act to be immoral. obviously you don't care if everyone else thinks something is immoral if you don't agree. the question is, do you care if you think it's immoral?

I guess a conversation like this can only go on so long since we start to lose grasp of the flow of the conversation over time.

that doesn't make any sense. moral/immoral is the value judgment of the act. if you're saying you don't care about the value judgement of one scenario versus another, then what metric are you using to differentiate them instead?

act A => immoral => ok
act B => immoral => not ok

really I think you're just goal post shifting. you want to be able to be ok with this without having to defend it. I don't know why you'd want to discuss it in that case though.

I was going to post something like this before but I didn't want to do my usual over-analysis of things. But...

Jen definitely has a point here. There is a sort of moral chain here. To keep it simple:

Is it immoral/unethical to hack someone's phone, take their images, and (let's say "enjoy") them? Yes

Let's break it apart:
  • is it immoral to hack someone's phone? Yes
  • is it immoral to then copy someone's images? Yes
  • is it immoral to "enjoy" someone's images that have been obtained in this way? Yes
  • is it immoral to "enjoy" someone's images that have been obtained in this way, if I had another person obtain them for me? Yes
So, at what part of this are you removed from guilt?

The only thing going on here it seems is "mob mentality": everyone else is doing something immoral, which means that it's ok for me to do the immoral thing too.

great game so far. randomized campaign maps are great, so multiple playthroughs aren't identical (they're slightly less interesting that way though). tech and unit tree is determined by 4 separate choices (2 weapon techs, race, and "secret tech" (kind of like element or faith)), making for a lot of interesting combinations. feels like it has the most solid design of any of the age of wonder games so far, though I'll probably always like 1 the best.

some cars' night-time headlights are basically full highbeams with a shade over it to keep them around waist level, and activating "highbeams" just pulls back the shade. problem is if they go over a bump or you are otherwise below the oncoming car, you just basically get full-on highbeams.

though I think they still may not be quite as bright as whatever regular highbeams are. regular older-style highbeams aren't just a little bright, you can feel them burning into your retina when you aren't even looking at them.
