So the factory belongs to the state or the workers of the factory, depending. Not some rich guy.
the problem is here, where you've split the people into classes and decided that one class should forcibly have to give things up to another class.

with capitalism, (I guess), "workers" have the same opportunity as everyone else to become the next "some rich guy". the state doesn't just move in and even things out, rather people have to earn their way to it. (yes, it doesn't always work out that way, and yes, there's a spectrum here with evils on both sides.)

pretty sure we did that, but not to the extent that we blistered our hand. our hands did get pretty sore though from playing the mini games.

most of my "injuries" are from fighting games, and having to do repeated flame dances and aura bolts, which blisters my thumb after a while.

not 100% sure, but I think to make the race as close as possible. also to maximize the speed of the race, and the number of position changes that occur, all of which (I guess) adds to the excitement. it also makes pit timing critical, since your tire wear makes an enormous difference as to how fast you take each turn.

Is what you mean here that you basically "travel" right away? Whereas in Minecraft you find a place to live ASAP and basically stay put there. So maybe in Terraria you are always moving, and not really stopping?

Games where i gave up on them totally, because of a very difficult bit, are
my list would be 2-3x longer than this, but I've left out a lot of less important games

Icewind Dale 2: Got halfway the first time; got 80-90% the second time (not including lots of false starts)
Doom 64: one level I just could never get past; no idea what I'm missing there; been dying to try again but I don't have the game
Final Fantasy Tactics: I think it was second to last map
Zelda Majora's Mask: not sure counts, but could never figure anything out in the city with the schedules and time travel and everything. *eventually* made it to the third dungeon, but gave up soon after.
Age of Wonders 2 and 3: even though I love this series (am playing Planetfall right now), I never beat most of them, and only beat AoW 1 once.
Starcraft and Broodwar: only beat these by cheating (was too hard and I wanted to see the story)
Planescape: Torment: only beat by cheating which I mostly regret. was not enjoying the gameplay, and only kind of enjoying the story, so I didn't care at the time.
Diablo 1: too hard relative to the minimal enjoyment
Homeworld: almost beat it but not quite; got too hard
Kerbal Space Program: yeah, thanks to my don't look stuff up rule, this is basically impossible to get anywhere in. I tried and tried, but it's insanely challenging.
Lands of Lore: got to a really bizarre level that made no sense, and then got stuck there. wandered around forever but never found what I was missing.
Golvellius (SMS): made it far, but then could never find what to do next. needed to find the aqua boots or something. tried so many times and never got any further. (this was over 30 years ago).
Majesty: never really got good enough at it to beat the harder levels
Netstorm: game is just insanely hard
Nox: never seem to be able to make it all the way
Painkiller Overdose: very hard, couldn't even do the first level
Puzzle Quest: tried many times to get past an Ogre boss, but could never do it, even with a different class
Warcraft 1: very hard game, partly because of the crap UI
Wing Commander: Privateer: loved this game, but I never quite understood how you're supposed to dodge in this stlye of game, and a part near the end you just can't survive unless you can dodge for a very long time, which I couldn't do
FF Mystic Quest: got stuck missing an item
Soul Blazer: same
Illusion of Gaia: last boss
Ka-blooey: game just gets super hard
King Arthur's World: just gets too hard
Lemmings 1 and 2: same
Paladin's Quest: last boss I think; my sister of all people is the only one I know who beat it
Secret of Evermore: last boss
Shadowrun: some dragon boss was impossible; not sure what I was supposed to do
Soldier's of Fortune: game is just too hard
Super Punch-Out: game just gets too hard
7th Saga: game is just too hard
Uncharted Waters 1: I beat 2, but not this. In recent times, I played the heck out of it and basically mastered the game, but it just would never end, so now I'm not even sure if you *can* beat it, but I think you can...
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn: This game's normal is the previous game's hard; I gave up.
Mega Man 9: got stuck on one of the last levels

Games I could never beat due to crashing:
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Grim Fandango

in rare cases, I become super determined and force myself to pull through. it takes too much energy to do that though, so it has to be a great game that's worth doing it for.

in most cases, I give up and maybe try again in 5-10 years.

greenmist01 posted...
One answer said "give up, stop playing, uninstall the game". Who out there does that before at least doing the answer i said?
I have a thing where I practically cannot look anything up anytime ever, with some exceptions. Even if I'm ridiculously stuck I don't want to look anything up. Only exception is if I suspect it's a bug or something. Another exception is Minecraft, where you basically need to look everything up since there's no way to find things out in-game.

I've been trying to move away from this a little though, since there are some games I've played through 5+ times over the years, and there are certain parts that I just never figure out. So, eventually, I decide to look up all the stupid things I've missed so I finally know what the heck they are. But usually only after a lot of playthroughs.

k but in an adventure game I've been given a clear objective, and a clear set of obstacles to overcome to reach that objective. Like, the princess has been kidnapped and is being held prisoner in the castle, so let's go to the castle and try to save her.

Yes, in Minecraft, at any point, there's a huge implicit list of things to do at any given time. The game has goals to work towards (feed yourself, protect yourself from monsters, gain resources, attain enough self-sufficience that you can survive exploring far-away lands or especially-dangerous places, obtain enough of resource X that you can use it on a large scale, etc.), but it's up to you which ones to pursue and when.

I've tried a few times to like it. For one, the style having such tiny bricks really annoys me. Only having two directions to explore annoys me (though I guess it's more than that if you include down). The combat really annoys me. And nothing "clicks" when I try to suffer through it all. It's all irritation and no enjoyment.

I guess the question is: when should it "click"? But usually if a game irritates me, I can't get past it. It would have to be boring, not irritating.

the top 10 list isn't too bad. every game I've played on it I can agree was a game worthy of being listed near the top.

paring it down to what I've played:
Minecraft
Mass Effect 2
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Dark Souls

I would move Dark Souls up a lot (and Skyrim down a lot), but otherwise can't complain. The rest of the games I've *heard* are probably worthy of being there too.

they all have their good and bad parts. a while ago I would have said that DS3 was the best of the three, but for some reason I always find myself playing 2 again, and not playing 3 again, even though I thought 2 was the worst and 3 the best.

eventually heard someone mention the reason for this: 2 has by far the most character variability. magic is on par with melee, and you gain way more levels than the other games, meaning you can define your character much more than the other games.

DS3 is the opposite of 2: you level excruciatingly slowly, and magic is unfortunately nerfed. meanwhile the combat encounters and bosses more or less require you to play a very particular way (fast melee), and since you level so slowly, it's very hard to break free from that pattern. so 3 ends up having by far the least character variability, at least on a first playthrough.

So, for which is better... I think they're all good in their own way, each with their own flaws

DS1: amazing first half, poorly designed second half
DS2: most enjoyable in some ways, with lots of early game frustration, some less interesting level design, and great DLCs
DS3: maybe the best most fluid combat, aside from too much dodging, but has some hidden flaws (no poise; magic is barely useful; less character variability); DLC content is some of the best in the series

I missed that this was for a xmas present. Thinking about it, the "Head First" series of books are pretty good for learning fast. They come with a variety of different puzzles and quizzes to test you on each chapter and are written in an unconventional visual way to make it easier to absorb the information.

I think like any technical book series, the quality of the books in the series will vary by the author, and the series itself is more about how the information is presented; so each book may be relatively better or worse than the others. I've only read one and a half of these myself (Design Patterns, and something analysis).

random tips but I don't know for sure how good they are for an actual person trying to learn from scratch:

  • probably try to learn Java. it's more or less just basic pure OOP with few if any unnecessary features. avoid things like C++ and JavaScript that have huge amounts of "cruft" in the language that are hard enough to wade through when you're experienced. ultimately though, learn whatever you enjoy learning.
  • learn how to read documentation. could be the single most important thing. whatever language you're learning should have multiple online references containing every last ounce of information you need to know. it isn't even like a wiki or a game manual, where the information you're looking for may or may not be there. the language and framework documentation should contain 99-100% of the information you need.
  • thing is, this kind of assumes you know what a function and class are, and why you would want to look them up... so, somehow, learn about classes, functions/methods, variables, and how memory is laid out for each one. learn about the stack and the heap. learn about garbage collection vs memory management. these are kind of fundamental things that actually you probably won't learn from documentation or just experimenting. it would take a good 1-3 hour lecture to explain it all, at minimum. some of this is what you learn in 2nd year comp-sci, and it's pretty important.
  • try to have programming projects in mind that you want to work on and work on them. do whatever you find enjoyable and don't worry too much when it turns into a mess. managing the mess is the whole point. try to find ways to manage the mess, and read about clean code practices. https://www.amazon.com/Clean-Code-Handbook-Software-Craftsmanship/dp/0132350882

(I suppose this is all really intermediate advice rather than beginner advice. in uni, except for the intro course, all you're really told is "here's a language; learn it". if you can't learn the basics of a language by yourself (by reading the documentation and experimenting with it), you won't get far, I guess.)

here's the progression that university courses use (at least the ones I took):
  • learn basic procedural language concepts (variables, ifs, loops, functions, etc.) (semester 1)
  • learn basic oop language concepts (classes, objects, references, etc. also IIRC they introduce stacks and queues) (semester 2)
  • learn assembly and machine language. convert between the two. convert between assembly and C. understand the C calling convention. write programs in assembly that call C functions. write programs in C that call assembly functions. (this teaches you a lot about the stack.) (semester 3)
  • learn more advanced assembly, writing graphical and interactive programs in pure assembly. (semester 4) (this was fun, but I don't think it was very useful. the previous course was the most useful one.)
  • learn about "abstract data structures" and how to implement and use them. they also taught about the heap here. (semester 3 or 4)
  • "programming paradigms". learn the difference between OOP, functional, and logical programming. implement the same project in all three over the course. (semester 4)
  • from there, learn actual applications of programming, going off in various directions. graphics, databases, scientific computation, etc. (semester 5+)

Are you talking about space 4x games? If so:

Endless Space 2: probably the best 4x space game right now. combat is not that impressive though. (IIRC you basically choose a general strategy (by choosing a card for each of 3 stages of the battle. kind of works like football plays, where you choose a play the best you can, not sure of which play the opponent will choose.)

Master of Orion 2: it's pretty old now, but it probably has the best (2D) space tactical combat ever made. the game is not well balanced, but that can be seen as a good thing. does a *lot* of great things that have yet to be surpassed by other games.

Master of Orion (4): only played a bit of it. didn't seem terrible.

Stellaris: a really weird game with extremely chaotic design philosophy. Paradox doesn't seem to know what they want this game to be, and they keep changing directors. it's kind of a mess, but can definitely be enjoyed. IMO it's getting better over time, but damn is taking a while (like 3 years now). requires buying bucket loads of DLC to get the full experience.

Sins of a Solar Empire: I feel like if you want space combat, this might be the game to try. It kind of plays like Warcraft 3 with spaceships, which may or may not sound appealing. (not an exact description but there's definitely a similar vibe.)

GalCiv 2: a solid space 4x game that can be enjoyed a lot, but doesn't really do anything in particular all that great.

GalCiv 3: I wanted to love this but I hated it when I tried it. payed full price too. will have had a ton of development time since then, so not sure what it's like now.

what I'm saying is not even about actually having kids. my point is that I think there's likely a potential psychological tendency (not for everyone) towards unhappiness without them in your life (any, not just your own). the point being to be aware of this as a potential source of depression, (maybe, maybe not, up to the person), so that you can at least be aware of it, and if you so choose, work towards it somehow; or maybe work harder on being a positive presence in the lives of the children that you do already know. I think there are a lot of people that might not even consider that as a possibility for their depression, but they might find something they didn't realize was there if they know where to look for it.

not generalizing anyone, just putting forth a potential plausible sounding explanation for a problem

you guys are acting like I said that all depression is caused by not having kids, and that everyone should necessarily have kids. you don't even need to have them, just being around them can help, maybe, if you're depressed and your depression is a certain kind of depression.

I know plenty of people who are happy doing what they are doing without having children around...
I did expect these kinds of "I don't want kids" responses, but you guys are going way overboard putting words in my mouth.

There is literally no point where you can't keep teaching yourself, and the 30s sure wouldn't be that point if there was one.

I think that comes across as "Bring a new human being into the world just to entertain you." which is an especially bad idea when someone is depressed.

Also to hell with having kids.
I didn't suggest you should do so haphazardly. I'm saying at that age it starts to make more and more sense psychologically. A single middle aged man is definitely going to start to be depressed for these kinds of reasons, generally. At least it's a plausible explanation. If you're jaded to heck like a lot of people here are, being around children can be a great way to help that.

I think it's partly that at this part in your/our lives (assuming around 30+ somewhere) we're supposed to have kids.

Now that I have nephews, they spice up just about everything I get them interested in. Any time they do anything it's practically immediately "wow!"; they get surprised and excited by the most mundane things.

Basically, you've run the course of what you can teach yourself. It's supposed to be time to start teaching your little ones what you've learned.

it's strange that English doesn't have a plural second person pronoun. The closest we have to one is "y'all", interestingly both a plural second person pronoun and a contraction, but whenever someone says "y'all" they get shit on for having lazy English.

it is, or was, "ye"

my previous manager... I don't have a lot good to say

my current manager is maybe not "smarter" than me, but he's better than me in a lot more ways than that
