TopicAmber Guyger trial live (police shooting of man in his own home)

First day wasnt too eventful outside of the defense trying to get a mistrial early on. Only three witnesses were called, including Amber Guygers former partner who she had a sexual relationship with.

Also since it keeps coming up, Botham Jeans front door was fully closed but unlocked because he had recently got back from running an errand. Its speculated that he rushed in (maybe holding something) and forgot to go back and lock his door. He was on the couch eating ice cream when Amber barged in.

So far most of the discussion has been around what pieces of evidence should be allowed into court. Her defense tried to declare a mistrial due to some info leaking but the judge shot it down.

Its supposed to start back up in about 5 min.

Terrible situation all around. Not sure what she deserves for killing that guy. Wasn't his door ajar when she went in? Who leaves their door just open?

Im also from Dallas and have lived here my whole life. So I have more interest in this case than usual. Im not sure what the proper punishment is, and Im unsure if murder is the correct charge. Definitely manslaughter though and she should be punished to the full extent.

This is a link to live coverage of the Amber Guyger trial. In case youre unfamiliar or forgot, this is the case in which the police officer (Amber Guyger) mistakenly went into Botham Jeans apartment, believing it to be her own. Once she realized someone was in the apartment, she shot him in self defense. Botham Jean was not a criminal under investigation and was simply in his apartment. In fact he was a literal choir boy who sang in the choir at his church and worked as an accountant for PWC, one of the big 4 accounting firms. The shooting was the night of September 6th, 2018. Trial started at 9am central time.

I once had a case where it was basically a domestic violence dispute. During the jury deliberation, someone who worked for the court brought in the police report from the incident. Literally everyone ignored it and kept deliberating like it didnt exist except me. I was shocked. Like really? Nobody else even wants to read this critical piece of evidence?

i reeeeeeally hope I never have to rely on 12 randoms to determine my innocence.

She's suing target because someone tried to stab her?

You need to explain the story in the post Shablagoo, a lot of people can't click links or watch videos if they're at work on their phone or something and now the story is confusing/contextless so no one can chime in their opinions

Michael Turners friend is stabbed by a mentally ill homeless man several blocks from the target. Turner and friends chase after the man and find him in the target where he breaks Turners hip with a shopping cart and then stabs Allison Meadows.

The Meadows family is suing Target for damages.

Suing Michael Turner is just Targets way of trying to blame someone else for what happened under their own roof. The family certainly doesnt blame Mr. Turner and they are thankful he was there that day.
-Attorney for Allison Meadows (stabbing victim)

I havent watched the news story or read the article yet but based on this summary, Target did nothing wrong and the Meadows family has no reasonable case against them.

Wow you have such a bad take on this and clearly have zero fucks given that the husband was tricked and believe the child is still his problem financially.

If a baby is adopted that is one thing, but this woman cheated and has the husband raising some other mans load.

I'm going to say this as plainly as possible:

If you could raise a child for eight years and then turn your back on them for any reason, you are not a good person. You are allowed to be angry at the mother. You are allowed to be frustrated and hurt. If you abandon this child, who views you as their father and their world, you are a complete monster

Do you feel this way about step parents who get divorced?

To the people saying that theres no off/on switch, this literally happens with step-parent situations every day and nobody bats an eye. One day youre taking care of your step kids as if theyre your own. The next youre divorced and no longer taking care of them emotionally or financially. Nobody calls you an asshole for stopping.

I generally dont have an issue with felony murder laws. I think the original purpose was to hold everyone accountable for crimes committed in groups, even if only one person pulled the trigger so to speak. This prevents criminals from pointing the finger at each other and saying I didnt kill anyone!...which may technically be true but their involvement in the orchestration of the original crime ultimately lead to the killing. Without felony murder laws, many murder convictions might not happen because determining exactly who pulled the trigger can be difficult or even impossible if none of the people there (the criminals) are willing to testify against their buddy. With felony murder laws, the justice system holds them all accountable.

That said, Im not 100% sure this is the best application of the laws but at the moment Im not fully against it.

Damn man. I snapped 3 tendons in my ankle back in 2012 while playing basketball . Had to have surgery and go through physical therapy. I was back to physical activity about 8 months later. To this day though, the ankle has never felt the same and wont fully stretch/bend. I still run on it and everything but it has a lower tolerance for standing still than my good ankle. I tried roller skating back in 2016 (on a date) and my ankle was just not having it.

Can never close your bedroom door

Couldnt play video games or watch tv from Monday through Thursday. This rule was eventually relaxed around 6th grade.

Couldnt have more than one box of cereal open at one time. So if someone else opened the Cheerios, I couldnt go and open the Fruity Pebbles until the Cheerios were all gone.

My mom also had this really weird rule about going outside. You can only go outside once. If you come back in, you have to stay in because I dont want people going in and out of the house. Like, if I walk back in shed be like why do you keep going in and out of the house!? And Im thinking holy shit I forgot something. It was stupid

As someone who teaches math in my spare time (all subjects up through Calc 2), I think it's important for people to understand that decimals, percentages, fractions, and ratios are all really just different ways of representing the same idea, part of a whole. It blows my mind when I run across adults who genuinely don't know what a percentage is or how to find a certain percentage of a certain number or even what the answer means.

Also please focus on the WHY when solving problems. It goes a lot further with helping kids understand the material.
