I worked in Silicon Valley in the early 2000's, so I did pretty well. All the house flipping and crazy money flying around made people very wasteful. Couch doesn't match the new drapes? Get rid of it. New flat screen doesn't fit in the TV cabinet? Toss it. New gadget came out with slightly higher resolution or faster processing than the old? Junk it. Looking back it was crazy what people would throw away.

My dad met this Afghani guy who had just come from Afghanistan to the US on a lottery. He knew nothing about America and didn't know english, it was like a completely new world for him.

Anyways, he got himself an apartment but didn't have any furniture. One day my dad goes to his place and sees that the place was fully furnished. My dad was shocked but didn't say anything, the guy didn't even have a job yet! When my dad finally asked him, he said he had been going on the street and seeing all the cool stuff people were throwing out and brought a lot of the stuff home and cleaned them off a little. A lot of the stuff looked perfectly fine to me.

The next recession is going to be a doozy. The Republicans have already shot 2 of the 3 bullets the government can use to stimulate the economy, lowering taxes and lowering interest rates. The only bullet remaining is increased government spending, and with the already exploding debt thanks to Republican tax cuts, that may not be possible.

Obviously there will never be a time when no one is buying clothes, but certainly there can come a time when less clothes are bought (and demand for them goes down) if they ever had the buying power to satisfy not only their need to stay warm and covered, but also their fashion sensibilities a little...By that I mean that of course if people have the extra cash, then most of them will go out and try to buy clothes that make them feel a little better about themselves, or express themselves more specifically, etc. They will want to be a little extra, you know.

Then there will of course be some frugal people who will just buy whatever they need to replace clothes that are old or stained or torn, etc. So again, I'm not talking about achieving some absolute collective adequacy for volume of clothes...but certainly demand can go down via less overall desire for clothes due to having bought more.
