Topic | [VGMC] d49: DNF FW15C/What Am I Fighting For, ENDYMION/Revenger |
GameBopAdv 05/15/19 5:21:07 PM #36 | DNF FW15C (ALL PHASE MIX) ENDYMION Match 1 is quite easy but Match 2 is quite not. Had to listen to the two of them a few times here to make my decision. Ultimately what made the difference for me is that I find myself disliking the high strings and overall orchestral focus in Revenger like those war-ready trumpets, but it's still a pretty cool song with those digital elements, they just aren't in the focus. I don't mind the high strings in ENDY. I appreciate how much I've had to think about decisions already in Set 3. --- luigi says: "and" |

GameBopAdv 05/14/19 2:16:20 AM #193 | Trying to figure out my top 10 is difficult, there's like 20 and my rankings of them really begin to blur together, but there are 5 that fairly easily stand out most to me (in no real order here) FCFF - Grosstown Traffic CrossCode - The Ultimate Experience Great Sluggers - Full Base Pokemon UltraSun/Moon - Ultra Recon Battle Das Geheimnis der Happy Hippo-Insel - Area 5 EDIT: okay I did some more thinking and I think going forwards onto my top 10 would go (also in no particular order outside of the difference between top 5 and 10): DKC2 - Mining Melancholy Terraria Calamity - Murderswarm Secret of Mana - Steel and Snare Pacman CE2+ - Pac Twin Attack Smash Bros 5 - Dark Man Stage man so many of these were from Division C. --- luigi says: "and" |

Topic | [VGMC] d45: Decisive/Uwabami, palm tiny hand/Don't Turn Off, EXSPHERE/Final Song |
GameBopAdv 05/11/19 12:01:37 AM #13 | Uwabami Don't Turn it Off Class::EXSPHERE_NOSURGE; LoH:CS-DC -- The first 1:20 of this song is far too emotional moody piano for me, but once the real meat of the song begins it gets pretty good, I especially like the warping digital keyboard notes going up & down in the back. I'm not as interested with the more symphonic strings in more of the focus, but the synths used in this song are real nice. But while the song does fun stuff with those synths I feel like it mostly just stagnates with one cool thing with them over and over rather than letting it develop, and mostly focuses on just the slower moody stuff in front. Uwa Bami is much better for me here. C-PoaTH -- At first I thought from the name that the game was CLADUN and was hoping for something like the Cladun song which was pretty cool. This is extremely not that for me. This is mostly just slow emotional moody singing with mostly just basic piano backing, some of my least favorite stuff. At least it kind of "expands" at about 2 minutes in, but really there is very little for me here. Other song is also vocal but it's my type of pacing with more of my type of instrumentation, so there is a lot more for me there. D3-TFS -- More singing, wow. I kinda like the bells going on in this song, and the wild, uncomfortable warp thing going on at 1:20 through 1:40 is a really neat thing. In some ways though I don't like that the song just kind of, repeats it. I feel like that lessens it's impact. Maybe they should've changed things up with it some of the times. Anyway, this is another vocal vs. vocal but this one is more gentle, emotional & natural, whereas the other is more harsh & mechanical. And while I usually say "natural" in a "dislike" sort of way I do feel like it works decently better than how I normally find it here with more exotic sounds like those bells, but harsh & mechanical is much more my kind of way. Topic | [VGMC] d44: Dark Man/Dead Neon, Twilight/Me Vs U, Courtyard Garden/Face Myself |
GameBopAdv 05/10/19 8:12:14 PM #48 | Dark Man Stage Intersection: Me vs. You Escaping the Courtyard Garden (wow if I did the first letter only thing like some people are doing it spells die wow spooky) SSBU-DMS -- Man this match is a thing. I'd say these are two of my three favorites on this half of Bracket D (though I don't immediately know where the third lies in relation to these two). This song is great, love the active drums and all the great digital synth sounds. I'd say those are the strongest points of this song but the actual melody and whatnot isn't weak, but not a lot worth saying about it either. Other strongest parts I would say are like the very beginning & loop point, like 2:09 where that one synth just fades out in the back while the strong bass notes play onwards, as well as the little "dark" buildup at 1:44. Dark man has the better ditigal sounds but I kind of feel like I can get slightly more behind Demon Truck's actual "song" (melody tune notes). But, if anything that's really slight, and I guess Dark Man's strengths outweigh Demon Truck's. But either song advancing here would be good! AE&L-SoT -- Some interesting instrumentation and good variety in the types of styles presented in this song, and a fun, almost chaotic swapping between them. But it's got vocals in the focus and I don't want 'em, especially that main singer's voice. That said there really is some fun energy in this song with a really great, wide range of styles presented, which does include emotional sad stuff I don't like though. Hmm, even if it didn't have those lyrics I'm not sure if I'd vote for it. Because this song's real strength is all of it's fun variety and stuff, whereas while Steam Intersection is a bit more "limited" in the genre it focuses on, it does it real well at getting tones & keys that work Really well for me, and I realize that like, :36 and especially 1:27 of it come off stronger to me than any of the moments of SkyTwilight. But maybe that's just because I'm too Angry About Voices. Or maybe not, whoo knows? RT&tET-EtCG -- This song manages to come off as very... plain to me. Maybe I'm still offput by the churchland organ. The melody progression at 1:21 sort of reminds me of Little Big Planet I guess, and it's pretty cool right there I suppose, but like I said, the song seems too plain. The persona song is really plain too. What is with today? I prefer the instrumentation of PersonaSong but there's something about the actual notes that seems...gross to me. For that reason I'm going with Court Yard Escape, I guess. --- luigi says: "and" |
Topic | [VGMC] d43: Field of Hope/OOPs! All Artifacts!, Blue Rad/Fairytale, Tiebreaker |
GameBopAdv 05/09/19 4:55:32 PM #41 | Field of Hopes and Dreams Fairytale Poison and Solitude Ignith of the Final Attack Dr-FoHaD -- While I really like the bassline of this song, especially the digital synth for it, but in the variety of focuses this song has, it's all things that I don't particularly care much about, -- piano, high & child-like strings, saxophone, peacefulish mood, and as a result this song kind of falls flat for anything beyond background music for me. The little fluttery thing the piano does is kind of neat though, especially as a transition between sections, and I like the little addition at 1:16 that's like birds adding to the song, but they're more like abstract concepts of birds which is cool. The radio quality at the intro is interesting, but also why is it even there, but on the same hand, why not? As I said earlier though this song doesn't really rank that highly for me but it does beat Ooparts. RH-BR -- Orchestral battle-ready determination. Kind of alright but also kind of generic to me, but at least I can enjoy the mood. I do like the beat that picks up at :47 though. When it goes away at 1:33 it feels like my interest takes a significant drop as the mood gets moodier and the fun beat is replaced with a focus on high woodwinds. Well not really I guess as the two serve different purposes but one goes away and another is added in and I don't appreciate this trade. T-B -- My strong dislike of vocals makes this match closer than I like but I am just not particularly sold on the churchland music. I will say I think I didn't mention in yesterdays writeups that I liked how the downstepping tuba stuff at 1:47 in Castlevania song sounded but it's not enough. --- luigi says: "and" |
