Today's trope is Dem Bones. Here is the link: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DemBones

Animate beings constructed from ossific material in their entirety are a very common form of The Undead in video games, but much rarer in other media, to the point where, as an object of fear, they have become slightly camp. They're cousins to the Zombie in spirit, but remain explicitly separated in the public consciousness by the lack of muscles and other juicy bits. A likely explanation for their ability to see and hear and indeed their status as Perpetual Motion Monsters is a necromancer used Functional Magic to raise and operate them. Thus, these creatures are firmly inhabitants of Fantasy works. You might know them as skeletons. We call 'em "Dem Bones".

There are human, non-human, and weirder variants, and in 99% of their appearances, they're enemy Mooks. Their prevalence in RPGs is owed to Dungeons & Dragons, which established them as the slaves of necromancers. When they aren't Mooks, they're usually liches, which are much nastier, because they tend to be powerful mages. Skeletal spellcasters who are not liches are rare, but not nonexistent.

Often enough, Dem Bones are reused in the same game la Underground Monkey. Expect, in the spirit of a Zombie Minotaur, to find double-category monsters, like a skeletal mammoth or dragon. Many games have even tougher skeletons that are colored red. This could be because the red ones are a little more skilled and covered in the blood of hapless adventurers who couldn't best them.

A prominent variation is a being composed of just a skull without a body. In this case, their ability to attack may be a simple bite, or through magic spells. They may or may not also have the power to defy gravity to compensate for the lack of legs. As trope examples indicate, there are a noticeably greater number of friendly talking skulls compared to the rare friendly skeleton.

TL,DR: Living skeletons.

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Best of the Trope!

Here are the rules. Each day, I will post a trope from TV Tropes, and each poster can name up to three examples of that trope. Whichever nomination gets the most mentions wins! Posters may also name as many Honourable Mentions as they like, but they are purely optional and will not count towards the running score. You may look at the TV Tropes page for that day's trope for examples, but you do not have to pick all your examples from the page. You can nominate whatever examples you like, as long as they qualify for the trope. Each trope will last around 24 hours before the next one goes up.

Posters may also nominate any tropes they wish to see come up during the series. This is optional, and you don't have to do it every day, or at all. Tropes will be randomly selected from the list each day, except for some occasions where I will pick a thematically appropriate trope that may or may not be on the list.

Here's the list of previous tropes, so if you wish to nominate some tropes, check on here that it wasn't previously done. http://board8.wikia.com/wiki/Best_of_the_Trope

If Trump declared himself a god, he should go all-out with it, really exaggerated and bombastic. I'm thinking fashioning himself after the God Emperor of Mankind from Warhammer 40K, or maybe dressing up as M. Bison, but with a MAGA hat and the American flag as a cape.

Of course, that probably isn't going to happen, and I don't live in America so it's a moot point for me anyway, so I'm just having fun imagining it. It wouldn't be fun if it actually happened though.

Today's trope is Magic Knight. Here is the link: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagicKnight

Most mages are of the Squishy Wizard variety, able to work eldritch wonders but not take a punch. And most warriors are Magically Inept Fighters, able to deal and take devastating damage, but their range is limited to the length of their weapon and they'll have trouble with problems they can't bludgeon to death. But who said you can't have the best of both worlds? Whether they're a wizard who picked up a melee weapon and some spiffy armor, or a warrior who learned to cast a few spells, the Magic Knight is every bit as deadly with both spell and sword.

For the purposes of game balance, they'll either be weaker at sword and spell than a pure fighter or mage, generally slower, somehow otherwise limited to being defensive or offensive, or they'll be The Hero, who is expected to be the most powerful character anyway. Usually, the Magic Knight will specialize in a particular class of magic (attack or healing, for instance), effectively making them a hybrid of only two "classes", rather than being an out-and-out "Jack" of all trades. However, being a total Jack-of-All-Stats is also possible, depending on the game.

Another form of balance may be found in their spell loadout. Instead of the wide variety of spells a normal spellcaster can use, they tend to focus on Status Buffs and direct attack spells. Other typical abilities for this class may include infusing their bodies or weapons with elemental powers. Doing the same with Standard Status Effects is not unknown either.

TL,DR: This character is equally proficient in both magical and physical combat.

Geralt (The Witcher)
Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

Today's trope is The Reason You Suck Speech. Here is the link: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheReasonYouSuckSpeech

One character delivers a speech to another character on all the reasons why that other character sucks or is a horrible person.

the speaker has a point, even if they're villains. To give a speech about it, the speaker has to have thought it through and can usually have more than one reason why you suck. This is because the writer of the story has also thought it through. Compare to Calling the Old Man Out. Also compare Talking the Monster to Death where this is meant to kill or redeem a villain. Could also be a Take That, Scrappy! where someone tells a hated character what the audience feels about them. This can lead to failure if the character receiving the speech Can't Take Criticism.

Today's trope is Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence. Here is the link: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence

The character ascends to a higher state of being, even becoming a god. It can result from other supernatural causes, but is most often used as a character's fate after they die, in a riff on the idea of a heavenly afterlife.

It is mostly a way to pay off a character. Or play off, in some cases. A way to put the character on a bus, though that's not all that it's used for. If the writers should need the character back, it can be very easy to reverse, in which case the character will De-Power as a God in Human Form. Sometimes the accession isn't even meant to be permanent if the writer needs some way for a character to enter a higher plane, then leave with something important like knowledge or a new power

TL,DR: A character leaves their mortal shell, and becomes some form of powerful spirit.

Today's trope is That One Level. Here is the link: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThatOneLevel

There are times in video games where, instead of a boss becoming infamous for being frustrating and/or difficult, a level does. It could be that it is infested with Goddamned Bats or Demonic Spiders, is really long, lacks items or checkpoints, is home to That One Boss, is home to That One Puzzle (or at least one with a Guide Dang It!), has you trying to outrun an Advancing Wall of Doom or otherwise sticks you with auto scrolling, tasks you with keeping a NPC without any basic survival instincts alive, has a different mechanic in play (often from a level-specific Unexpected Gameplay Change, such as a Stealth-Based Mission or Action-Based Mission), or is The Maze level. If you experience frustration and anger at a level that may have one or more of these things, congratulations: you're playing That One Level.

Escort Missions, Slippy Slidey Ice Worlds, Under the Sea and Down the Drain-esque stages tend be more receptive to becoming these levels. For an optional level that is intentionally difficult, see Brutal Bonus Level.

TL,DR: This level is infamous for being particularly difficult.

Today's trope is Cruel and Unusual Death. Here is the link: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CruelAndUnusualDeath

Some deaths not only suck, they suck beyond the telling of it. The extremely painful and particularly gruesome, morbidly embarrassing deaths that leave the deceased absolutely no chance to retain any sort of dignity, forever. Deaths that transcend from being merely "bad" into the realm of being "ugly."

This trope isn't about just any unpleasant death. Sure, it's bad to get shot in the head...your blood spills all over the floor and you may void your bladder or your bowels. But compared to... oh, being eaten alive from the inside out, getting shot is a walk in the park. It is worth noting that for the most part, creators reserve these events for use as villainous karmic deaths (where the level of horror involved with the death is often part of the karmic punishment) and to get rid of unpleasant people who are Hoist by Their Own Petards... especially the embarrassing type. If this is done to a sympathetic character, on the other hand, it is usually the point where the killer crosses the Moral Event Horizon, if he or she is not on the other side of it already. If they do this on a regular basis, chances are they're a Complete Monster.

There isn't necessarily a correlation between the visible gruesomeness of the death and the actual nature of the character's death, some deaths that fall under this trope happen offscreen, and it's the very idea of it that makes it horrific. Deaths with a high horrible factor with less visible content can just as easily fall into scary, though.

TL,DR: A painful, unpleasant and/or humiliating death.

Nominations:
Oberyn Martell's head is crushed by the Mountain's bare hands (Game of Thrones)
Kiyomi Takada's death (Death Note)

Today's trope is Clipped Wing Angel. Here is the link: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ClippedWingAngel

The villain (perhaps after already going into another One-Winged Angel form and still losing to the heroes) shape shifts into an ultimate Super Mode. So awe-inspiring is this new form the very skies weep blood, so terrifying that it combines the power of every monster, and the hero and his love kiss each other goodbye. Problem is, the new super form is made more unstable by any of a number of things, be it an unstable Power Source, built-up side effects, incompatible Power Upgrading Deformities, or a "plain old" Super-Power Meltdown once the heroes poke him.

The results ain't pretty.

Much like a Fake Ultimate Mook, this boss goes down in three hits and goes into a Shapeshifter Swan Song and promptly keels over in an explosion of energy or guts. Hopefully not both. Hell, hopefully neither!

Usually, this is a subversion of One-Winged Angel by making the enemy an Anti-Climax Boss, or it may have just been that the writers designed a monster form without a corresponding battle. Can be played for either pathos or comedy.

TL,DR: The powerful new transformation comes with a crippling weakness the previous form didn't have.

Genie Jafar (Aladdin)
Testuo's final form (Akira)

Today's trope is Squishy Wizard. Here is the link: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SquishyWizard

It seems that many who possess great magical, mental, or otherwise mystical might are also in the worst of shape. They may be sickly, horribly ill, crippled, or just physically weak and puny; in general, people who have reality-bending powers seem to suffer for it in other areas.

There are usually reasons. Powerful psychics may suffer from this, as they can do anything with their minds for what do they need their bodies? It may also be the result of a magical Old Master experiencing the declining health that comes with age. Alternatively, physical health can sometimes be traded for magical power, be it through a bargain of some sort or the use of very draining magic... or it may be more mundane: rather than go outside or exercise, the magicians spent all their time studying spells, and are thus very weak physicallynote . From a Doylist POV, it's about game balance. Without their physical weakness there often wouldn't be any reason not to use them.

In game mechanic terms, the Squishy Wizard is usually a Glass Cannon, being able to dole out big hurt but generally dying if a tough monster looks at it funny. Although Squishy Wizard is sometimes not completely Glass Cannon. They can have decent, or even good magical defense, to tank out other wizard (or a monster)'s spell, but a single punch and they're down already.

TL,DR: A character who is very powerful magically, but their physical strength is poor to compensate.

Babidi (Dragon Ball Z)

Today's trope is Tier Induced Scrappy. Here is the link: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TierInducedScrappy

Two variations of The Scrappy specific to Video Games and/or Tabletop Games.

The first, often seen in fighting games, concerns the best characters getting hated not out of a hatedom but for being overused and/or downright difficult to defeat due to their high power, gameplay-wise; understandably, those two points get on a lot of people's nerves and tend to be favored by other people. Characters who are Difficult, but Awesome tend to avoid this fate because they are hard to play well, but disproportionately powerful examples can still earn this status. A typical Tier Induced Scrappy is a high tier character with next to no learning curve, though high learning curve characters who are unreasonably difficult to beat when played by a master (especially if they also happen to be extremely frustrating to play against and/or boring to watch) can and will earn this status. Stone Wall and Gradual Grinder characters are the most common candidates for this trope (especially heavy zoners), though touch-of-death rushdown characters (particularly ones with good approach options) also tend to earn the playerbase's hatred. Characters with massive weaknesses who are strong in spite of those weaknesses are also common targets just based off of principle; people hate Fake Balance, and these characters are often powerful when they shouldn't be. See also Too Qualified to Apply.

The other, more common to RPGs, is a character who is widely hated because they just suck in gameplay terms. They might be the nicest person in the world, but if they're The Load in combat or gameplay, their fate is decided. A Low Tier Induced Scrappy has no Magikarp Power; they're bad from the start and there just doesn't seem to be any point in training them when there are other, more rewarding characters on hand.

The final and rarest breed is a character who has been in both positions at least once; this tends to happen to characters with movesets that are very sensitive to metagame shifts (which can and often will make previously useless characters into rising stars), and characters with awkward or outdated movesets also tend to fall victim to this due to the difficulty of balancing them without giving them buffs that leave them obnoxiously overtuned rather than genuinely good or nerfs that make their whole kit fall apart. Gimmick characters tend to fall victim to this due to the inherent difficulty of balancing a character around one very specific gameplay element, and when they are powerful, they are often frustrating to deal with and/or overtuned to make up for their often glaring weaknesses.

TL,DR: This character is hated for being either way too powerful or way too weak, or both at different points.
