TOP 10 FAVORITE GAMES OF THE YEAR PRESENTED BY DRAGON QUEST XI S: ECHOES OF AN ELUSIVE AGE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlbg1fDcUSA

WE DO IT! I revisited this game just a few weeks ago when they put in a new trophy to crossover with the upcoming RE3 remake and yes I confirmed this is indeed my Game of the Year. RE2 was already an all time video game and Capcom managed to top it with the perfect mix of old and new to make it feel like a completely new game. It combines the best elements of all 3 generations of Resident Evil. The originals survival horror gameplay and small enclosed areas, RE4's over the shoulder camera and shooting and Capcom's new RE engine they used for RE7, but have also since used it for this and DMC5, which gives it its hyper realistic yet stylized look. To me this a perfect video game and a perfect REmake.

Obviously the best thing they did was taking Mr. X, who previously only showed up in your 2nd playthrough of the original game and made him a constant threat throughout the entire game. The routes were different enough to warrant their own playthroughs and even had new segments where you played as Ada and Sherry in their respective routes. Resident Evil is also one of the few series where I really enjoy speedrunning going back to Code Veronica and the first REmake. Memorizing the exact order you're supposed to go through these environments and taking out enemies in the most efficient way possible and seeing what makes these games really tick.

I'm excited to see if they can use what they did in this game to make RE3 go from an average game to an incredible game and we only have a few short months to find out!

that was easy

#11. Mega Man 11

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftTX6mCnQkU

I swear I didn't do that on purpose...

Mega Man was slim pickings this past decade and I'm not going to count all the collections that came out. It was a decade known more for the death of the series and cancelled games like Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends 3. 11 really brought back the series in a way I was hoping. After Mighty No. 9 I wasn't even sure if I liked this style of game anymore, but Capcom was able to prove me wrong and it ended up being my 2nd favorite overall game in 2018. The new gear system I thought was the biggest change the series had seen since the introduction of the Mega Buster and I certainly hope they're working on a Mega Man 12 as we speak (or maybe an X9 I'd be okay with that too)

I don't know if this is the best Yakuza game, but it is certainly the MOST Yakuza game. 5 Playable stories that I spent 100+ hours playing; this game is so massive the PS3 was on life support even trying to run it. I look forward to the PS4 port hitting very soon! Also for real Akiyama is the best non-Kiryu character in the series, I would play a whole game as just him. For me this was the actual end of Kiryu's storyline while Yakuza 6 was more of an epilogue.

#13 Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhIMMp8_ceI

This is tough for me because I love every Ys game how can I choose just one? Ys Seven brought the change to the series of having a 3 party system and while maybe the series was no longer true to what made Ys what it was, I loved the changes that game brought to the series and has continue with to this day. Since I haven't play Ys IX yet, Ys VIII was the most recent refinement of this system. Adol and an entire cruise ship of passengers get shipwrecked on an island and they all must come together and build a community to survive and solve the mysteries of this Island

in reality this game is actually pretty similar to Death Stranding including having a woman who's destined to wipe out humanity and remake them over and over. It might actually be the first Strand game!

Other than that it's the core Ys gameplay I've come to know and love and definitely worth a check out

#15. Mortal Kombat (2011)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfqmGy98Mw4

The that that kickstarted the current generation of Mortal Kombat. It was a retelling of the stories of MK1-3 all in one game. The coolest thing it did was having seamless transitions between the story cutscenes and immediately going into a fight without load times. This game is also famous to have come out (along with Portal 2) the same day that the PSN month long outage happened. I got this game and immediately couldn't play it online so I just spent all that time practicing characters and working on the trophy list.

Here are some games that didn't quite make the cut for my 15 favorite games of the decade!

Also reminder I did limit this to only 1 game per franchise so I basically just took my favorite game in those franchise

TOP 15 FAVORITE GAMES OF THE DECADE HONORABLE MENTIONS

Persona 5 - The wait from P4 to P5 took forever! I think I still prefer P4 although I never played P4G. Still unsure if I'll be getting Royal I'm sure I will at some point.

Sonic Generations - Tough pick between this and Sonic Mania. Both feed into my Sonic nostalgia in different ways, but I am a known fan of 3D sonic and that's one of the other few franchise I enjoy speedrunning

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep - This is the best KH game. You should play it some day (in the process of playing all the others)

Asura's Wrath - Maybe best ending to a video game ever?

Deadly Premonition - Hey Zach, did you know they're actually making a sequel to this game? That's wild.

Professor Layton & the Unwound Future - Layton time travel adventures and the twist of how it was all possible had me glued to my DS screen

Monster Hunter Tri - I convinced all my high school friends (although we were all like 24 by the time this came out) to get the game and Wii Speaks and we played this game for like 200 hours. I don't know if they've ever forgiven me, but I certainly loved it.

Mass Effect - I'm the weirdo that likes ME1 more than ME2 (I still haven't played ME3). I liked when it was more RPG focused over being a shooter and that first game was all about the world building which I'm super into

#2. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkYgqHZKcsM

Feels like most of my 2019 was building up to this release. After years of wondering if we would ever get it in English, Falcom finally switched from XSEED to NISA not just for Ys but for Trails as well. Once it was confirmed I kicked things into overdrive playing the Crossbell games as well as replaying Cold Steel 1 and 2 when they were re-released on PS4. This was finally the game that brought together everything from all 3 story arcs in an almost Infinity War type fashion and it was glorious to see. However just like every other set of games in this series, this game is just part 1 of 2. There's still Cold Steel IV End of Saga waiting in the wings to wrap up the Erebonian arc in what I'm hoping is an Endgame type of fashion before we can finally move on to the future arcs that are currently in development.

The game itself is structured pretty much the same as Cold Steel 1 was where you switch back and forth between events at school and going on field studies before the game decides it's time to get the big plot going and the you know what hits the anime fan and it gets all over the place. I really liked the new Class VII that was introduced they have their own unique style to them that's different from the old Class VII. I also really liked the new UI for the battle menus. Instead of scrolling through a menu, even part of it is assigned to the 4 directional buttons and 4 face buttons. It's kinda weird at first, but you quickly get used to it. The biggest surprise was that added the QoL improvements that were added to the later ports of CS1 and 2 like turbo mode to speed through traversing and battles faster as well as dual audio.

It's definitely the best Cold Steel game and in the Top 3 for series along with SC and Ao.

TOP 10 FAVORITE GAMES OF THE YEAR PRESENTED BY DRAGON QUEST XI S: ECHOES OF AN ELUSIVE AGE

#3 Apex Legends

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEAWC9eK1Ts

And now for my most played game of 2019. I don't have a counter, but I'm sure I've easily put more than 1000 hours into this game. Anyone who saw my 2017 list knows what a revelation for me that PUBG was. After playing pretty much every shooter in the 90s I had pretty much given up on playing them throughout most of the 21st century. The one thing I loved back then were the online deathmatches where every player only had 1 life and they didn't respawn until the next match. The entire battle royale genre is just that blown out into modern times. Apex builds on what PUBG started with better controls, better presentation, unique guns that feel great to shoot (PUBG's still feel better, but compared to stuff like Fortnite it's incredible), hero characters and its biggest feature being the pinging system so I can play with more than just my friends. As someone who hates talking to random strangers I would never play in random matches as a team in PUBG I would only ever do solo, but with pinging I can instantly just mute all my team mates and just ping where everything is and it works great! The only thing that really makes me still prefer PUBG is the atmosphere. Apex is very much a party atmosphere where everyone's having a good time while PUBG is straight up one of the most terrifying games I've ever played where I'm able to envision myself as the character in the game and getting overwhelmed with dread where if they die then I also die. I've played hundreds if not thousands of matches with the likes of @WiggumFan267 , @Arti , @iiicon and TLO . A different crowd than the people I played PUBG with, but a diverse group nonetheless. They helped me keep my interest in this game as long as I have and I'll still probably continue to play it into next year......

.....until Phantasy Star Online 2 comes out >___>

I mean look....nothing I say is going to convince you one way or the other if you're going to like this game. You just need to play it and find out for yourself. I'm sure my Kojima BS tolerance is much higher than the average person, but from my perspective the story made perfect sense and is perfectly serviceable. Is it a mastercraft in story telling? Absolutely not and Kojima has never been about that, but for me it's also the part of the game that factored least into how much I enjoyed this game. For me it was layers upon layers (upon layers)^[UPON LAYERS] of systems this game lays on you and just keeps building on them over the course of the game. The actual act of playing the game where you're keeping your balance and delivering cargo and maxing out every point on the map for upgrades that will almost always improve your ability to deliver things was just so engrossing I couldn't stop. I was playing this game 12-16 hours a day just delivering and delivering and delivering and I loved it. I love it so much even after I finished the game when other B8ers like @WiggumFan267 I would willingly watch his twitch stream and help him out with his deliveries. There's so many systems that are so deep that no single delivery is the same as the last. There's always something that pops up I've never seen before and seeing the way other people do deliveries is fascinating. Maybe I should quit my job as a medical professional and sign up for UPS I don't know but the core loop of this game is addicting and once it hooks you it's got you for good.

#5. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuYcOkulhTA

Full Disclaimer I backed $100 to this kickstarter

Also Full Disclaimer I was scared to death this was going to be another Mighty 9 situation, especially after the multiple delays

Turns out IGA still has that magic to make another great game in the genre he basically invented. Ever since he left Konami I've played my fair share of metroidvanias that have come into popularity in his absence and while they all had their own unique spins on the genre, none of them really captured the same magic as the Castlevanias that IGA made. Turns out all you had to do was make Symphony of the Night again because that's basically what Ritual of the Night is. This game feels like the natural progression of what he would have made if he had kept going after Order of Ecclesia. I also respect it's willingness to let you completely break the game if you want to with equipment and shard builds that can kill any boss in 2 seconds if you really want it to. I hope IGA gets a chance to make another game whether it's another Bloodstained or something different because he's certainly earned it here.

TOP 10 FAVORITE GAMES OF THE YEAR PRESENTED BY DRAGON QUEST XI S: ECHOES OF AN ELUSIVE AGE

#6. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp7Ofgpfxoc

Now this is the only game on this list I haven't finished yet because I'm actively playing it right now (just started over the weekend). I'm maybe 1/3 through it, but I felt that was already enough to rank it this high on the list. Not sure I've played a game this year where the moment to moment combat feels so satisfying. Every swing of the sword and parry of the other enemies attacks feel like they matter and one mistake means your death. I'm not a good gauge of the difficulty of FROM games, but I feel like other than Bloodborne they had been progressively easier with each installment. Sekiro, however, is unique in that I feel like it's harder than these games have ever been, but at the same time your player character also feels more powerful than they've ever been. It's a constant power struggle between the two sides and why deflecting and countering attacks is so important. The majority of the time you're not even killing enemies by reducing their HP to 0, but instead deflecting attacks to lower your enemies posture meter so that you can do a OHKO once it breaks. There's also a collection of ninja tools for your prosthetic arm and different sword techniques you can learn that seem to be more situational in defeating various enemy times although I've found a lot of success with the firecrackers to distract enemies.

Most of the boss encounters I've come across have been me pretty much dying in record time and constantly retrying until you find the one opening in their attack pattern and exploiting it to a victory. The resurrection mechanics is nice, but is also probably what allows them to make this game as difficult as it is. Die too many times thought and NPCs around you get affected with DRAGONROT and they become too sick to interact with and thus locking you out of content until you can heal them. Luckily healing them seems easy enough just obtaining a certain collectable and using it at Buddha shrine, but I'm guessing they're limited over the course of the game. If I had more time to play this game maybe it would finish higher, but who's to say? I do look forward to playing it more over the next week or two and hopefully obtaining the platinum.

TOP 10 FAVORITE GAMES OF THE YEAR PRESENTED BY DRAGON QUEST XI S: ECHOES OF AN ELUSIVE AGE

#7. Mortal Kombat 11

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zwQPJmg-Kg

The sole fighting game on this years list (I feel there wasn't a ton of new fighters I was interested in this year outside of playing Smash and SFV DLC and listening to a certain someone ramble endlessly about the day to day happenings of Tekken 7). This game was the thrilling conclusion of the reboot started in 2011's Mortal Kombat. I've never been much of a competitive fighter (although I feel I'm decent enough at most of them to at least hold my own against random competition), I've always been the guy who plays through every character's arcade mode to get every bit of lore and no other fighting game franchise is more about doing that than Mortal Kombat. NRS doubles down on their story modes and I love every moment of them. I was concerned going into it because Mortal Kombat X's story was a bit of a let down with the Kombat Kids introduction and the whole Shinnok storyline done again (Shinnok was never good), but they really made both that game's story and MK9's story pay off in this one where the keeper of time, Kronika, has been the one pulling the strings throughout every game in the series going back to MK1 and has constantly been rebooting the timeline as she see's fit. Eventually Liu Kang and Raiden break the cycle of Konflict and defeat her although in the process Raiden becomes just a dude and it's Liu Kang who has ascended as the FIRE GOD and is now in control of remaking time as he sees fit. This is all very exciting for whatever they end up doing for Mortal Kombat 12 or whatever they end up calling it and I'll be on board when it happens. It might be crazy to say this was my favorite video game story of 2019, but I loved it that much.

It's hard to articulate exactly why I love Control. It's super janky (okay I love jank in games), none of the guns really felt all that great and it's not like I'm some big Remedy fan. I only played Max Payne 1 and 2 and thought they were fine, but that was it. I really only checked it out because Jeff Gerstmann said it was one of his top 10 games of the decade. Turns out this is secretly a sequel to Alan Wake as well so I need to go back and play that eventually. I think what it came down do was that it was a 3rd person Metroid prime with an x-files type of setting and a ton of cool physic powers you can use (similar to Psi-Ops)....and those are all things I really love and they worked together well to crate an environment I wanted to see every nook and cranny of while I'm basically this late DB/early DBZ character by the end of it. It had the right amount of challenge where while Jesse is sort of fragile and any random enemy or boss could take you out if you're not paying attention, but if you're on it you're just coming at them like a psychic god and no one can stop you. The only thing that really stopped it from ranking higher with me is the ending is kind of anticlimactic and abrupt like they know they already have 2 future DLCs planned with more story, but it's a minor complain in an otherwise great game.

TOP 10 FAVORITE GAMES OF THE YEAR PRESENTED BY DRAGON QUEST XI S: ECHOES OF AN ELUSIVE AGE

#9. Astral Chain

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHSdihDIkeM

Hot Anime Cops the game! So this is actually my favorite Switch exclusive game of 2019 so dash all hopes of seeing any others on here. This futuristic character action game which is totally not evangelion (but kinda is) has you and your twin sibling joining Neuron, an elite police force dedicated to defend the remains of humanity (which live on a giant island city called The ARK) from "chimeras" which come from the Astral Plane. Neuron has captured chimeras and use technology to tame them and they essentially become your Personas and fight alongside you in battle. Much like DMC5 each legion is basically its own fighting style and you're constantly switching between the 5 to form combos to defeat your enemies. The game is also split up between sections where you walk around areas investigating the town and doing actual police work, then once you discover the threat you switch to the action sequences. I found it extremely satisfying to play through and it's anime as hell. It's made by the majority of the same team that worked on NieR: Automata (minus Yoko Taro) so I think that alone should get people to try it if they haven't. Speaking of Yoko Taro this is actually his 2019 GotY you can't get a bigger endorsement than that!

Do we actually know if it's Ys or Trails that is more popular in the west? Because I'd rather have Ys 9 first.
Ys is more popular in both regions as far as I know

Time for a proper top 10

TOP 10 FAVORITE GAMES OF THE YEAR PRESENTED BY DRAGON QUEST XI S: ECHOES OF AN ELUSIVE AGE

#10. Blazing Chrome

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzR7ldgPDro

In a year where Konami themselves tried to make a sequel to Contra Hard Corps and resulted in maybe the worst Contra game to date we got indie developer Joymasher out here making a true sequel to Hard Corps (with maybe a little Metal Slug thrown in as well). You can select the first 4 stages in any order you wish before going through the gauntlet of stages 5 and 6. I ended up replaying it multiple times on various difficulties and modes. It starts out with the girl and the robot, but you eventually unlock others including a ninja who only uses melee attacks and at that point I was basically playing it like ninja gaiden. By the end of my platinum run I was speedrunning the game on Hard and making the top 100 leaderboards. If you have any love for these types of games at all you should definitely check it out.

#1 The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

This is definitely an approach to take with a remake. Nintendo basically took the original Gameboy game as it was and made a 1 to 1 remake of the entire thing. I don't know what else to say beyond that because it's Link's Awakening it's still a great Zelda game except now it's 1080p and the new art style is gorgeous. The framerate issues while noticeable didn't really bother me too much. I wouldn't be against them remaking another Zelda in this style (cough cough give me a Zelda 2 remake you cowards).

I think it only missed my top 10 just because I thought they would do more with it like either completely redesign the game or after you finished the first playthrough having an entirely new game open up afterwards or something like that. Sadly no it's just that Game Boy game and nothing else. I think if this was a $30-40 game and not a full $60 that might have been more forgiveable, but alas.

#2. Devil May Cry 5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug6P1LoFZsg

I think I'm one of the few who really enjoyed the DmC reboot I thought that was a very fun game, but even I was very happy to have OG Dante back doing his Michael Jackson dances. I only did a single playthrough of this in my GotY catch up so I'll come back later and go for the platinum, but I really enjoyed what they did with all 3 characters. Nero felt he had very basic combos, but all his devil arms helped bring a variety to his combat. V was a fun new way to play of sitting back and letting your familiars handle 99% of the fighting. Very easy to S rank missions with him too. Dante is Dante he's got 4-5 different melee and ranged weapon each, he's got his 4 different combat styles just like DMC3 and 4, the man is just a pool of endless possibilities. It can honestly be overwhelming playing as Dante, but you eventually get the hang of it and what works for you. The actual structure of the game is the same as it ever was and comparable to DMC4. You spend the first half of the game playing as Nero or V in various missions, then you take over as Dante around the halfway point and play as him for 90% of the rest of the game. I like what this game did with the lore of the story and moving it forward and also even setting up DMC6. Also Niko is probably the best new character they've added in awhile. Too bad it came at the expensive of Trish and Lady basically doing nothing the entire game.

#3. Outer Wilds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwqRV1cpUfM

Bros it's Giant Bomb's Game of the Year 2019! I always have to make sure I at least play their GotY and The Game Awards GotY so even though I wasn't really planning on playing this one this year, it was winning enough awards that I had to give it a shot. It was a fun little game and although I can't really talk about it too much without getting into spoilers the elevator pitch is that it's a first person space exploration game where the world resets every 22 minutes and you have a Majora's Mask style bombers journal where you're logging everything you find throughout the various planets you visit and figuring out how it's all connected to solve the greater mystery of why the reset is happening.

You're not really given much direction you just get up and go and make your own game of it. The actual controls of playing game can be a birth rough, especially the spaceship although it can be remedied a bit by using the auto pilot. I saw a few people the game saying the ending made them cry, but I guess I didn't really get any of that. I enjoyed what I played I got the platinum and that was that. When I was first making this list it was hanging around at #9 or 10, but it eventually got pushed down and here it is.

#4 - Super Mario Maker 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyvzC2-6sxs

On paper this game is better than the first one. It had a ton of new features people were asking for, but at the same time had other features that turned out disappointing or were straight up gone. No more amiibo support meant no more 8 bit versions of all those characters to play as. The multiplayer feature is severely hampered by Nintendo's own online system that it's basically unplayable and the move from Wii U to Switch made it more difficulty to actually create levels. Despite all that I still had a blast playing through the 100 or whatever it was premade levels they packaged as a single player story mode and I even created a stage that got featured on Giant Bomb's Get on my Level series of videos. I think that alone is enough to get this game as an honorable mention for this year. Also I'm excited about the free Zelda update they did a few weeks ago. I hope they do at least continue to update it with new content over the next year or two.

TOP 8 GAMES I WISH I PLAYED IN 2019

I won't say much about these games since I obviously I didn't play them so let's just get them all done in one post!

8. Monster Hunter World Iceborne

I played about an hour or 2 of this to see what it was about, but I'm still reeling from the hundreds of hour I put into base Monster Hunter World and I'm just not ready for that type of commitment yet. I took me nearly a decade to play MH again after I did the same with Monster Hunter Tri.

7. Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order

I am a known fan of Star Wars video games (both good and bad) and it sounds like this might be one of the best ones yet. I didn't actually pick it up though until just last week and I was already deep into catching up on a ton of other games in 2019.

6. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

I know this game tops a lot of people's lists, but I haven't played an FE game since finishing Awakening a few years back and I haven't really gotten around to any of the other 3DS ones since then. Since I like to play series in release order it'll probably be awhile before I get to this one.

5. Luigi's Mansion 3

Luigi's Mansion was a fun launch game for Gamecube. I never played Dark Moon, but people seemed cold on it. Luigi's Mansion 3 came out and everyone's like THIS IS THE BEST ONE. So I need to definitely play this. Year of Gooigi was sadly not 2019 for me.

4. The Outer Worlds

Fallout New Vegas is rad

Not Fallout New Vegas also sounds rad

Maybe be playing this one sooner rather than later

3. Kingdom Hearts III

The other piece of my 2019 puzzle of series I was catching up on. If I wasn't finishing my PS2 Collection or playing Trails games, I was replaying all the older Kingdom Hearts games going for the Platinums in all of them so that I could eventually play this. I fell a bit short as I got 1/3 through Birth by Sleep before I ran out of time. Luckily it sounds like this is working in my favor since the ReMind DLC hits next month and it sounds like it's essentially the Final Mix version of the game.

2. Ys IX: Monstrum Nox (JPN)

I imported the latest Ys game because between that and Trails you never know when we'll get Falcom games in English. I would have played this when it came out, but Play Asia spent over a month actually getting it to me and by then I was already in GotY catchup mode and didn't have the time to dedicate to something I'd have to sit down and actively translate as I played. Don't worry though Adol I will get to you soon enough!

1. Judgment

The Yakuza team's detective based spinoff! With the main series now going the way of turn based JRPG I'm betting this will be the series will be the way to get your old school Yakuza gameplay. Everyone's who played it lists it very highly on their lists, some even their Game of the Year and I'm definitely regretting not getting to it this year. Obviously with me playing both Kiwami 2 and 6 (and Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise) this year a bit of fatigue was starting to set in and I just wasn't ready for it at release. I've made it a running theme now of playing games from this team a year after they release, but hopefully this is the end of it and I'll be ready by the time Yakuza 7 comes out in English next year.
