I honestly really like the way TES does it, where each particular skill goes up depending on how much you use/train it My only problem with this, in a general sense, is a that youve got to be *very* careful with how you balance the game. Or you run the risk of railroading the playing into a boring, optimal strategy that doesnt allow them to level up the skills they might have more fun with. And because your preferred skills become underlevelled, you become less and less likely to invest in them as the game progresses. like Final Fantasy 2. >_> --- |

Very common type of effect in YGO its monster ability lets you search any card from that family and add it to your hand since its a pendulum card, its basically a one card combo. You can either search another pendulum scale and summon your hand, or if you already have both scales, search the perfect monster to summon. But its only banned because Konami is racist against pendulum cards --- |

Levels - characters learn new skills at pre-determined experience levels or other benchmarks. Examples: Pokemon, Final Fantasy 4, Mega Man. Purchase - Using a resource like AP or Gold, you can buy new spells and abilities, either at shops, or at certain benchmarks, like levels. Examples: Final Fantasy 1, Mass Effect, Xenoblade Chronicles. Equipment - Your abilities come from an item, weapon, or other character/spirit that you have equipped. Sometimes, these skills can be made permanent by "attuning" to them, either via AP or another system. Examples: Final Fantasy 7, 8, or 9. Discovery - Abilities are either found, or taught to you, by exploring the world and finding the relevant item or NPC. Mostly used in adventure games and metroidvanias. Examples: Legend of Zelda, Banjo-Kazooie, Super Metroid And I'm sure I'm missing some, but these are the big ones that I'm aware of. --- |
