Had a long talk with my ex-NYPD dad the other day (car was in the shop so he gave me a ride to work)

Man, this guy has openly bragged to me about breaking peoples' fingers, lying about his hours to get free OT, profiling, stealing drugs from people on the street (so he could get high)

It was a crazy talk. First real talk we had in a long-ass time. I could probs make a thread about it but I'm about to be at my post limit. He listens to hannity, and hannity was going on about the cop who murdered Brooks, and lying about what happened. I said "what that's not what happened, there's literally video" and my dad got visibly annoyed with me but didn't challenge me on it or anything.

When he picked me up after work he started talking about the murder, and that's when we had what felt like a real conversation. He said something that completely and utterly shocked me.

"The way it played out makes it seem like they killed that dude because he was running away and they were mad they couldn't catch him"

And I'm like "...yeah it's a bad look" and he goes on about how they were asking him questions leading up to it, like how much money does he have on him and why does he have so many bills. Again, my dad shocks me with "They only asked him that cuz he was black"

And i'm like damn. If my crooked cop dad can see it, why can't so many of you and so many others in this country

Meaningful change doesnt come from confirmation bias and ignoring facts because they weaken your argument. You see a bad shooting, you think all shootings are bad. You then think that, just because you think its unjustified, it should be murder. But the law is more nuanced than that, and situations are more nuanced than that.

Its not cut and dry when it comes to these issues, and none of it fits in a neat little box.

What percentage of the 1000 killings by cop is 50? Im pretty damn dumb apparently, but i reckon thats over 90% were armed. What were you saying... 9/10 were unjustified? How you feel about that now?

I thought the same thing. The D.A. is already attempting to make the case that a taser is a deadly weapon to prosecute other officers, and if it is a deadly weapon, the shooting is justified under Tennessee v. Garner.

His reconciliation of that will be key to the case.

Its honestly terrifying to see self identified cops defend the murder of a citizen. Just more evidence that there is deep rooted problems with the police force in this country.

Former national security adviser John Bolton claims in his new book that the House impeachment inquiry should have investigated President Donald Trump for potentially dubious actions beyond those related to Ukraine, according to the New York Times, which obtained a copy of the book in advance of its scheduled publication.

Specifically, Bolton highlights Trump's willingness to intervene in criminal investigations "to, in effect, give personal favors to dictators he liked," noting cases involving law firms in China and Turkey, the Times said. "The pattern looked like obstruction of justice as a way of life, which we couldn't accept," Bolton writes, according to the Times.

Bolton's book, titled "In the Room Where it Happened," is scheduled for publication next week but has been the focus of a months-long legal battle between the White House and the former national security adviser.

The legal fight over the release of the book, which is billed as an insider's rebuke of Trump's foreign policy, escalated Tuesday as the Trump administration went to court to try to claw back Bolton's earnings for the book and to potentially stop the its publication, arguing in a lawsuit that Bolton had breached non-disclosure agreements and was risking national security by exposing classified information.

The suit, filed in Washington, DC, federal court, alleges that Bolton's 500-plus page manuscript was "rife with classified information," and prosecutors say that Bolton backed out of an ongoing White House vetting process for the book that he'd been obligated to do as a result of the agreements.

"(Bolton) struck a bargain with the United States as a condition of his employment in one of the most sensitive and important national security positions in the United States Government and now wants to renege on that bargain by unilaterally deciding that the prepublication review process is complete and deciding for himself whether classified information should be made public," prosecutors write.

The legal approach in the case is one of the more extreme attempts in recent years to stop a former Trump adviser from recounting his experience, and the administration's longshot attempt to stop the book's publication raises major First Amendment implications.

The Atlanta police officer who shot and killed Rayshard Brooks was accused of covering up an earlier shooting he and other officers participated in, according to a judge who reviewed the case.

Garrett Rolfe was fired by the Atlanta police department following what officials called the unjustified killing of Brooks on Friday. Rolfe shot Brooks twice in the back as Brooks ran away after a scuffle with officers when they attempted to arrest him. It was among a recent spate of killings of black men by white police officers, which have ignited a national uprising against police brutality and racism.

In August 2015, Rolfe and two other officers opened fire on Jackie Jermaine Harris, who they chased after he was caught driving a stolen truck, the Guardian can reveal after reviewing court documents on the incident.

However, the shooting was not reported by the police involved. Harris, like Brooks, is African American.
