Topic | The Beauty of Reality: Why you should play Disco Elysium |
KanzarisKelshen 04/06/20 10:10:57 PM #1 | Picture a flower blooming in the garbage. Four white petals, so beautiful they seem to draw in the light to enhance their charm with a glow. Why is it there? How does its grey, hostile, drab environment allow it to exist? You don't know. No one knows. All we can possibly know is that it's a miracle, and we're lucky to be there to see it. That is Disco Elysium, and that is what it's all about. You might be wondering why anyone bothered to nom it. Its title sounds ridiculous, being a seeming riff on Disco Inferno. The answer, at least the one that I arrived at after playing through it is that it is Real. By this I don't mean it has a verisimilitudinous setting, or that it's dull and brown and boring. What I mean is that it has depth, and quirkiness, and horror and wonder and so much humanity it makes you want to scream, or maybe cry, or maybe laugh in frank joy. Its lead designer and writer, Robert Kurvitz, said in an interview that most games aim to entertain and serve as a form of escapism, a shield against a painful reality we can hide behind for a while. His hope while creating the game was to go a step beyond that. He wanted to do the same thing a good book or movie did, and instead equip players with the tools they needed to deal with their reality once they returned to it. Rather than try to persuade you that he did it, let me give you a couple examples of how him and his team tried to do that: -Maybe ten minutes after starting the game, you meet a filthy-mouthed kid called Cuno. His greeting is always, 'Fuck does Cuno care?'. He's ten years old, living in one of the poorest districts of the city you're in. He has no future, no hopes, no prospects. His father beats him up when he's not too doped up or half-dead to not care. He's addicted to speed, and offers you to split a dose with you if you can reclaim it from a place he can't reach. Cuno also dreams of a vivid detectivesque setting, the City of Rage, which he's tried to bring into reality through an insect farm. You can punch him, empathize with him, betray him, or ignore him. You can praise him for being a strong kid, or buy sportswear from him. No one will know how you talked to him aside from you, him, and your respective partners watching the scene. -When you call the police station to report you lost your badge, the entire station crew is listening in on your dispatcher. The second you admit it, they explode into jeers. Try to calm them down and you'll get owned. Like so: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/196447085627703299/635277633361543179/badge.png After the conversation ends, your skill representing your connections to your fellow policemen activates, and grants you a paranormal vision of them. They're all worried for you. Hoping your antics (and you've had many of them) won't totally catch up to you. They all laugh so they don't cry. -You can ponder thoughts to gain benefits. After enough time, you'll unlock an epiphany for them. Here are two of them, presented without comment: Problem Problem These are just a few facets of Disco Elysium. Objective facts to relate to our own, unique experiences. This is where my objectivity ends and my subjectivity begins. I'm a philosopher, by nature if not by trade. The whole time I played this game, I was thinking, as I do when I read a good book. Thinking about myself. Thinking about what my character was doing. Thinking about why things are as they are. Feeling a profound oneness with the world, and cognizance of how strange and endlessly complex it is. As I ran through the broken streets of a colonized postwar commune, I felt like my soul was about to fly. I felt myself growing, like a plant left under the sun and put on fast forward. I was challenged, amused, hurt, healed. I realized I was experiencing something I'd never seen before in videogames, and I felt so, so proud of the medium I love so much and which I grew up with for finally making such a great, unquestionable leap. When I was a little boy who was 3 years old, I played Doom with my father. The thrill of gaming started there, and it never really went away. Disco Elysium makes games more than partners in fun. Playing it is like seeing a friend who's a couple years your affable but immature and vapid junior blossom into a selfless, loving, questioning, mature adult. It is an emotion that goes far beyond simply being entertained. It's a part of my, our, everyone's process of growth as human beings. It is a blessing. it is truth. It is a miracle. Play Disco Elysium. --- Shine on, you crazy diamond. |

KanzarisKelshen 04/04/20 3:58:45 PM #345 | I'm glad my talking about DE got people curious about it :D I know I can come off as antagonistic or pigheaded at times, but if there's one game I wish could win game of the decade it's this one. I don't think I've ever felt so passionately about a game in one of our contests before, even though a lot of my favorites have made appearances. I'm not even mad that it's gonna lose to KH3, all I really want is for people to play it because it changes everything. I get the skepticism at it being more impactful than BOTW but I absolutely feel like more games will come out reshaped by DE's influence in the coming years than we'll see a surge of 'open world 3d adventure' clones. I'll stop clogging up this topic with this rambling, though -- when the time for its match comes, I'll put up a topic explaining why that game matters so much so anyone who's actually interested can read it without disrupting stats and discussion. --- On a different note, I don't think FO4 is comparable to New Vegas. New Vegas was hailed as a return to form on the narrative front, FO4 was seen as...yeah, 'more Fallout', p much. There's a big abyss in terms of perception even if sales for FO4 were likely better. The way I'd put it is, probably more people like FO4, but more people love New Vegas. --- Shine on, you crazy diamond. |

BotW isn't nearly as revolutionary as Disco Elysium. I'm saying this as someone who's balls deep into RPG design: DE is so fucking important it's causing people to reevaluate how they do their games in an entire different medium (tabletop RPGs, if you're curious). There have been other open world adventure RPGs before Breath of the Wild, and there will be more after it that will take little influence from it. It innovates Zelda, but it only innovates Zelda. DE is like the Metroid Prime or Halo of its genre in how it sets an entirely new standard that can't be ignored. The closest thing to how deeply it gives weight to everything you do is Alpha Protocol, and Alpha Protocol had absolutely zero lasting legacy. There's just...like, I'm trying to think of a comparison to explain how out there that game is in what it does and I'm failing, partly because it's the wee hours of the morning, but also because there's no way to match its technical and conceptual achivements to games that are still playing around with conventions set up in previous decades. It's a complete alien, and that's what dooms it. Look at how Undertale did even before it got rallied in the previous games contest and that's about DE's ceiling, because that's probably the most similar game in terms of impact. --- Shine on, you crazy diamond. |

KanzarisKelshen 04/04/20 5:10:46 AM #303 | Disco Elysium isn't gonna be worth beans, much as I hate to say it It's literally paradigm redefining and completely changes everything for all future narrative RPGs but this is gamefaqs. Nobody here cares about the fact we finally have a game that can unambiguously compete with the best from Paul Auster, or Gabriel Garca Marquez, or any other lit fic authors worthy of the name. It's a game that aggressively defies the conventions of games and has an actively antagonistic, fiercely challenging vibe versus what might be the ultimate 'comfort food' game in this bracket. When was the last time this site took a revolutionary shake-up well? --- Shine on, you crazy diamond. |

The buster we're talking about is physical actually It just straight up oneshots tanks if they don't mitigate it hard. Like, you know how 30% mit is basically enough for every fight to this point? Shiva says fuck that and makes you drop way more to not die. She DOES do a truckload of magic damage too, of course. It's the one fight I feel where popping your 15% mit off CD is less 'nice to have' and more 'required to take significant stress off the healers'. --- Shine on, you crazy diamond. |

KanzarisKelshen 03/26/20 12:51:33 AM #198 | HeroDelTiempo17 posted... I mean yeah, Feint isn't great, we use it all the time for 6s tankbusters but it's not better. But the ranged stuff is also essentially a role action (it's the same skill reskinned and doesn't stack) so it's a fair comparison to it and Addle. Unless you want to talk about the "amazing" job-specific utility of Minne, Paean (now with an actual use in 8s!), and uh...Healing Waltz and Improvisation? FWIW, that mitigation is no longer optional these days. Shiva in particular forces literally everyone to mitigate and do it correctly or you just plain die. The very first raidwide of the fight hits for like 130k on dpses and healers, and the basic tankbuster requires about 45-50% mitigations to soak, which makes Feint suddenly super valuable because it's physical. And it still pales in comparison to Troubador/Tac/Samba, which lets you negotiate the like 40-50k raw damage septuple teamwide busters that come in at the tail end of the fight. Ranged pay tax because having 15 second 10% mit is just absurdly powerful. --- Shine on, you crazy diamond. |

Losing a handful of GCDs there isn't enough to send melee's dps plummetting down to match ranged. If there was an effective "melee tax" you would expect both melee and ranged melee to do the same DPS. And obviously SMN/BLM are DPS gods this tier but SAM still manages to compete with them. Check the 50th percentile values on fflogs. Every single melee job except Ninja (which has Mudras) takes a nosedive, and ranged actually do overtake melee. It just doesn't matter at high end because high end players greed everything so they don't feel that heat, but the melee tax absolutely exists. https://www.fflogs.com/zone/statistics/33#boss=70&dataset=50 (note how MNK plummets to barely better than Dancer...that's not a coincidence, Monk has no ranged attacks whatsoever) --- Shine on, you crazy diamond. |
