I've always been a bit sympathetic to Trumps slow response, chalking it up to taking everyone by surprise (not just the USA). But I'm seeing news reports now that Trump was being briefed on the dangers of the Coronavirus since November by intelligence agencies who were saying that China is hiding how bad this is. His continuous denials of its severity, which lasted through february into early march, is inexcusable. The slow action should have never happened.

And why would he say mail in voting was stupid when he did mail in voting? Is he subconsciously acknowledging that he is stupid?

With that being said, Trump v Biden sounds about as appetizing as Trump v Clinton did 4 years ago. Can we get a halfway decent person as a nominee please? I'm just looking for halfway decent here. My goodness.

I remember reading an article a while back on how evidence was showing that the number of Chinese deaths was far greater than reported due to factors such as state-issued cell phone cancellations and other figures which would indicate a lot more people than usual are dying. Presumably, most were from coronavirus.

I just personally hope that nobody wants the virus to be worse just to make Trump look bad, and I also hope people don't want the virus to not be as bad just to make Trump look good. I think we all should want this virus to be as least impactful as possible and we should all hope that our administration can assist in getting us out of this whether we like them or not.

Has she told you exactly why she doesnt feel the need to obey your state's stay at home policy? Does she just not think its a big deal? Is the need to see family/friends that strong? What is the driving force here?

I know the family I'm referring to has always been a very social family. The whole multiple trips to the store a day/seeing family all the time is something they have done before this all happened. They just haven't really changed anything in their behavior. Still making tons of pointless shopping trips and maybe even more family get togethers since theres not much else to do right now.

I think possibly, to ask some people to make such a major shift to the way they live their lives is just unfathomable to them, especially if no one they know is sick.

I have a feeling this pandemic is gonna end my relationship. Every single day is another argument about her going out and doing things. I don't see it lasting.

Yesterday was a birthday party. Day before was going around shopping for a birthday present. Day before was a fire at her sisters. Today is shooting airsoft guns at her mother's.

I dunno how people can't grasp things

I'm close with a family that acts this same way. They are literally making multiple trips a day to the gas station to buy snacks or this place or that. They often go to visit every relative they know, young and old. They have friends over all the time. I've tried to kindly tell them without sounding condescending but they just literally do not care at all. They say "as long as none of us are sick" even though you can have the virus without showing any symptoms!

And then they get all offended when I say I can't hang out with them. There are people, who, for whatever reason simply feel no inclination at all to follow these stay at home orders, and I don't think I'll ever grasp the logic behind it.

Jobs can be recovered. Lost lives cannot.

Now the talk about suicide is interesting, as suicide is already something that was happening a lot in the world before this pandemic even happened. There's no doubt this pandemic may lead some people to that. It's also possible people who would have committed suicide, now won't. It's kind of impossible to calculate.

What we really want to avoid is societal collapse. And if the healthcare system gets so overwhelmed that it can't function, that could be a tipping point.

Saw an article about how health officials in Spain investigating nursing homes they could not get in contact with. Turns out some nursing homes were just left abandoned by the staff with residents still inside. They found several residents dead in their bed and others living in squalor. First kind of article I saw about societal breakdown, even if minor.

The world is incredibly fortunate this pandemic isn't as deadly to the general population as it is to the elderly. Could you imagine? We could have literally been on the verge of global societal collapse. Kind of surreal to think about.

Edit: I know the world will recover from this, but just hypothesizing how this could have been the KO punch had this been a 20-30% death rate rather than 2-3%.

Why are they charging for tests when getting tested is ultimately for the greater good if society and not a personal benefit.

I mean, as long as I'm not paying for it doesn't make a difference to me either way. Of course, you're referring to people who maybe don't have insurance and so forth. I imagine that maybe people were being billed initially for COVID-related care, but it sure seems like the US is leaning towards unilaterally making Covid-related care free.

My sister is in London, where they have universal health care. It's really great to get care at no cost over there, but the wait times and limitations on selection are a legitimate thing. Also, my sister had a baby over there. It's her second. She had her first in the US. In the US, you get your own private room, a lot more flexibility with scheduling, and more time in the hospital if needed. In the UK, she had to share a room, scheduling was made for her, and they kicked her out earlier than what I wouldve liked (which led the tear in her c-section scar to break open from all the additional movement).

Bottom line is that its great that universal healthcare makes healthcare affordable to all, but we need to understand in America, that if that happens, the way we experience healthcare will decline to what we are used to experiencing now as far as service, availability, and selection goes.

I'm curious to see how the American and Canadian health care systems compare to eachother in how this all shakes out

I've heard americans are getting billed like $3k just to get tested, and that doesn't include treatment. That's sounds insane to me but maybe that's normal there. If everyone accrues thousands in medical bills/debt as a result of this at a time where income is also restricted, that sounds like a big problem.

In Canada, the failure would be that people just aren't able to get testing and treatment done in a timely manner.

I wonder if poor performance could provoke a change in either system

My health insurance provider (Cigna) just said all COVID 19-related healthcare will be 100% covered. I'm sure other large insurers will follow. If that does happen, then advantage US in that scenario.

Arguably the only thing bad about universal healthcare is the waitlists.

My moms church closed. At least around here it seems like most protestant churches are closing at least a couple weeks, but most catholic churches are staying open. This is the lenten season, so really the worst time for this to happen to the catholic church. For various protestant denominations, the focus is more on just Easter and not the lent part, so they will probably reopen for that if they can.

the paranoia over hospital overcrowding and the like is not unfounded. You just need to understand that the patients there will all be elderly people 60+.

The scaremongering happens when people act like hospitals are going to be overun by people of all ages, maybe even you or me. No. From what we've seen so far from this virus, the lethality is virtually nonexistent for anyone under 60. This is a nightmare situation for our seniors though.

Yes, very probable Im sure. My point though, how much worse is corona? Sounds like either case would kill the young or old, but would only put the strong in great discomfort.

Actually, unlike the flu, the young have been show to be rather unaffected by coronavirus. While kids can still get coronavirus, they don't get as sick from it and often develop little to no symptoms. Worldwide, there has not been a person under the age of 10 that has died from coronavirus. Kids are oddly faring better than healthy adults.
