Kotetsu534 04/08/20 7:43:23 PM #420 | I'm really interested to see how Terraria does actually. It could completely bomb and get easily doubled by a pretty weak game, or it could do respectably, or it could even challenge for the win. I really have no feel for the extent this kind of "slow burn" indie with a huge playrate would pentrate GameFAQs (my guess is "not very much"). Minecraft got a bit of strength, but it's a global phenomenon (the kind of game that is known even by non-gamers). --- We are living our lives Abound with so much information |

TLoU with 82% of the vote (I promise I scrolled straight past you guys' scores so I'm not cheating!) Crusader Kings II is one of those games that on a different part of the internet is revered. Here, it's been in one poll where it got 2%, quintupled by FTL and absolute destroyed by the mighty XCOM. Yeah. The Last of Us was around in 2015 and did reasonably well - it doubled Halo 3 and got 60/40'd by KHII, which was disappointing at the time but KH2 did surprisingly well against Melee. Since then TLoU's sequel has received continued hype at big conferences and it just gets a lot of respect generally. It should crush CKII. --- We are living our lives Abound with so much information |

Kotetsu534 04/08/20 4:54:58 PM #13 | HALF parlay on Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Bioshock Infinite, Diablo III and The Last of Us Let's see, XBC2 v Arkham City. XBC2 managed to get 10% with SMO and BOTW in the poll - it shouldn't struggle to avoid being doubled by AC if it can do that. I think there's even an outside shot it wins this match! Bioshock Infinite v Terraria. There was a lot of hype and a bit of backlash as I recall for Infinite (I certainly enjoyed it much less than I expected), but it still did alright in the 2013 GOTYs. Terraria lost easily to Bastion. I'll risk Bioshock getting the doubling here, but it might flop. Diablo III v Zero Escape. I'm a little bit scared by this one. Zero Escape got 21% on ME2 and even if ME2 underperformed there's no way it won't do several points better on D3. D3 was also one of Blizzard's more controversial games so it'll probably get antivoted somewhat - I could see a KH3 style percentage. Still, it's x-stat from 2015 is absolutely awful. The Last Of Us v Crusader Kings II. CKII was in one poll in this site's history and it got 2%. FTL got 10% and XCOM got 34%. TLoU is probably stronger than when it was doubling Halo 3. Think it joins the 80% club tomorrow. --- We are living our lives Abound with so much information |

Kotetsu534 04/07/20 12:23:22 PM #13 | Half parlay on Hotline Miami, Rocket League, Yakuza 0 and Dead Cells On reflection, the only games to break 80% so far are: LoZ: BOTW (85% on The Outer Worlds) SMG2 (87% on Obra Dinn) God of War (85% on The Talos Principle) Witcher 3 (84% on Assassin's Creed Odyssey) SMO (83% on MK11) SSBU (83% on Tekken 7) RDR2 - vs. Dying Light (fractionally over 81% v Dying Light, still running) Horizon (81% on Fortnite) Bloodborne (80.5% on Black Ops) So so far you've either needed to be Big N, you were the Star of the Round (Witcher 3) and probably benefitted from SFF, or you scrape over 80% against something that gets mass antivoted (Horizon/Bloodborne), or you are against something truly unknown and you're very strong (God of War, maybe RDR2). 81% is really bloody hard to hit, even with all the blowouts we've had. --- We are living our lives Abound with so much information |

Kotetsu534 04/07/20 9:10:33 AM #10 | Change: Half parlay on Dark Souls, Rocket League, Yakuza 0 and Dead Cells Let's see... Dark Souls doubled Civ V back in 2015, and Dark Souls III blew out Dishonored. I'd obviously take both of those games to blast Hotline Miami so it should be joining the 80%+ club here. Maybe it misses fractionally. Rocket League is actually a game with some respect and a massive playrate. It went even with Shovel Knight in 2015 and that's probably a reasonable read on its strength. DBZF is just living on franchise value, which isn't likely to be enough (it lost to Ni No Kuni 2... I didn't even know there was a Ni No Kuni 2). Yakuza 0 is probably really weak, but The Witness managed to lose to INSIDE. Weakest match in the bracket? There's no reason why Dead Cells shouldn't get tripled by MGSV based on their polling histories, but I have a weird feeling respect for MGS has just fallen off what with the mess Konami have been since its release and Kojima's weird Death Stranding project probably hasn't helped either. I see a weird underperformance that probably drops it into the high 60s/low 70s. --- We are living our lives Abound with so much information |

I can see why people thought that then. I remembered KHII as being worth 41-43% on that level of near elite at its peak, but I guess it went up. Topic | ~GotD10s Spread Betting~ Day 12 feat. Red Dead Redemption 2 (-56)/Portal 2 (-34) |
Kotetsu534 04/06/20 5:28:16 PM #14 | HALF parlay on Portal 2, Animal Crossing, Kingdom Hearts 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Reasoning: Portal 2: Portal games did pretty well in 2015 - 32% on Melee and >45% on Sonic 2 is no joke. Back in GOTD I remember Portal hilariously crushing FFXII in a debated match. Portal's never really had a huge blowout win, but Tomb Raider has looked very soft in most of its polls over the last decade and I'm really not convinced this site is going to care about it much - Uncharted is pitched more squarely at this site's audience and it's never been very strong. Not much to go on but I feel good about Portal 2 doubling TR. Animal Crossing: New Leaf got a tripling off SMW in a SFF match. SFV got 1.8% in one of those ridiculous 9 way polls - you can say they're worthless, but still 1.8%! Another poll it was in saw it get 2.5%. Maybe it can avoid the doubling off franchise value, but I think modern fighters not named Smash are just not getting a hearing here, while AC has a recent release going for it (certainly didn't hurt Nioh or Ori). Kingdom Hearts III: There's some danger here, but DE is probably too niche to capitalise on the weak reception for KH3. Doubling Baba Is You is one thing, but it went and let an anti-vote magnet like GTA hit 80%. The only post-release KH3's ever been in saw it beat DMC5 - which did none too bad against Donkey Kong Country, so I'm encouraged. RDR2: Nothing obvious to stop it from joining the 80%+ like so many other big names in this contest when put up against ultra fodder. --- We are living our lives Abound with so much information |

Kotetsu534 04/06/20 3:43:18 AM #266 | I have a bit of a theory (which hasn't been substantiated) that these same-y sequels that don't improve anything actually hurt the original game more than bad sequels. What made the original game cool and unique fades with each sequel, while all the bad things get repeated and make people wonder why they liked the original game at all; this is a sentiment I often see when talking about the TR reboot trilogy. At least a bad sequel makes people clamor for the good ol' days... This is pretty insightful I think. The approach of many big western devs when they hit on something with mass market appeal is to play it extremely safe with repeated releases, which tends to result in games that are frankly a bit boring, even if well made and not rushed out the door. Whereas our old friends Square and (to a lesser but still noticeable extent) Nintendo tend to make pretty significant changes to their big IPs over the years, building nostalgia for the elements we remembered enjoying. --- We are living our lives Abound with so much information |
