360 Hz is the highest VRR capable monitor so far.

We'll get to 1,000 Hz or 1 kHz VRR panels eventually.

I'll be honest, I literally cannot see a difference between 144 Hertz and 240 hertz. There's no reason to have higher than that, other than to say you can.

It really is. A GPU that can quite literally max out every game available at 1080p above 60fps (hell, Gears 5 averages 80fps with Ultra textures and every setting on Ultra), and a lot of games right up to 4K in a 4lb aluminum unibody laptop.

It's legitimately crazy compared to how gaming laptops used to be.

That said, "Max Q" is more misleading than even other Mobile GPU configurations. Max-Q is a downclocked mobile GPU, which means theoretically it could be two steps below the desktop equivalent. But Razer supposedly clocks their Max-Q GPUs near the standard mobile variants, so that's nice.

RTX 2080 Max-Q is apparently somewhere between a desktop 2060 and 2070, which is disappointing and misleading from a naming standpoint. That said, it's legitimately amazing considering it fits in laptops that would've been considered nearly Ultrabooks a decade ago.

The problem with Razer Hardware is that they have a tendency to last just long enough to crap out right after the warranty expires.

I'm sure you've seen the stories about Razer ___ dying literally a month after the warranty goes away.

It's up to you if you want to deal with that when you're willing to spend so much money on a Gaming Thin & Light.

If you wait a few months, a lot of the AMD Thin & Lights got announced at CES.

There should be new Thin & Light gaming laptops using AMD's latest mobile parts.

Seriously, I haven't played a game that nailed this sort of "no clear good or evil choices" since Fallout II.

The Spacer's Choice thing, and now the Diet Toothpaste thing.

I normally play ostensibly as an all-good Paladin, but I'm surprised how often I've gone with the pragmatic "maintain the shitty status quo for the greater good" option.

As an example, Cassandra in the Diet Toothpaste quest. I killed her instead of letting her go. She clearly showed zero remorse for the people she killed. This is something I never do in other morality-based RPGs

I agree with this except for the life of a laptop. Unless you're just talking about gaming laptops then I dunno because I have a gaming desktop.

From what I understand, technology specific to gaming laptops has come a long way in the past couple of years. GPUs generate less heat relative to performance, and the laptops themselves while not price-competitive to gaming desktops, are actually relatively competitive with non-gaming laptops with similar computing specs.

Also, after dealing with too much bigotry and all the utter BS Trump and the GOP have been up to, I de-registered Republican and registered independent. I almost registered Democrat, and might still do it, even though it'll be a while before my qualms with them are overcome.

But I cannot in good conscience support a homophobic party that is so inundated with disdain for minorities, and especially now that they're getting friendly with the anti-vaxxer crowd. They're wrong on almost every issue I care about except a handful of economic issues, and that's just not enough.

We got married in December. A very small wedding because lesbian weddings in Oklahoma are still a bit taboo.

I still legitimately cannot believe that I went from closet bisexual to married to another girl in just a few years. I never even had a serious relationship with another girl until her.

Although her being from Ethiopia turned out to be the more interesting thing, because their customs regarding weddings and whatnot are so different from Europeans. It was a lot of fun, we had Ethiopian clothing and whatnot.

We're going to have a European-style wedding in a few months, again on the cheap. Being that I literally never wear dresses and am a tomboy, getting a wedding dress has been super awkward.

I know Razers are overpriced, but she's very much into style and substance and she's into thin and lights.

In any case...

Razer Blade 15
Core i7 9th Gen w/ 240 Hz 1080p display
RTX 2080 Max-Q 8 GB
16 GB RAM
512 GB SSD

Normally it's $2,999 but it's $500 off for $2,499
I would've paid the extra $200 for the OLED model ($3,299) but it never seems to go on sale, so the same computer for either $2,499 or $3,299... it's hard to justify the OLED one.

And yet Xbox One X upscaled OG Xbox games and 360 games in 4k because of work Microsoft did.

Only for select games. Ones with specific 4K patches. It's not like you can stick any Xbox or Xbox 360 game in the X1X and play it in upscaled 4K.

If you actually think they're going to release 4K patches for every game from this generation, you're in for disappointment.

At very best, you SHOULD be able to count on the vast majority of X1 and PS4 games working natively on the next systems. But actually improving underlying visual fidelity will have a dramatic variability in terms of performance hit.

So what you're saying is that Sony should exceed or match it for PS5?

Because I've never seen any other console company bump up older games resolutions and image quality for free.

Sony already said the PS5 will be compatible with PS4.

And the PS3 and PS2 both up-scaled PSOne games. The PS2 actually had some extra texture filtering options as well.

If the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro have shown us anything, it's that games that are not explicitly optimized for them generally benefit more on the side of frame rates and load times. I suspect you'd have to release individual patches for XO and PS4 games to run at 4K on the next systems, much like how it currently works with X and Pro.

It's really crazy to me how advanced mobile GPUs have gotten.

At this point, high-end laptop GPUs can play basically anything at max settings well above 60fps at 1080p, and most games relatively well at 4K.

It really makes me wonder if Nintendo may be onto something with this hybrid gaming platform idea. There will eventually come a point where the diminishing returns of dedicated console/PC hardware no longer translate into a tangible advantage over the convenience of portability.

Yes because they included that hardware.

Microsoft invest money into making old games work and also has enhanced many games to modern resolutions quality for free if you own the games. An initiative that will carry over to their future hardware.

No, Microsoft took advantage of the fact that the Xbox 360 (aside from the PowerPC CPU architecture) was vastly more similar to modern PC hardware than the PS3 was.

The PS3's Cell architecture was designed by absolute morons, and emulating it is completely bonkers. The Cell CPU was absolutely awful at some things and mind-numbingly advanced at other things.

Xbox One and PS4 games are going to be easily compatible with the next Xbox and PS5, because both systems used pretty much off-the-shelf PC CPUs and GPUs.

It's nothing to boast about. It's not revolutionary. It's the natural evolution of the shift away from proprietary console architectures.
