Something about Andrew Ryan though...

He has total control over you when you kill him. His 'A man chooses!' monologue seems at first that he's pleading with the player to 'choose' and overcome your slavery... ... but Andrew Ryan is the one currently in control. He's not pleading with the player character, he's acting in defiance saying that "I choose to die, I won't be a slave to Atlas".

There's a very easy thing with free education though...

The tax revenue generated from higher earners pays for the higher education by itself as long as said person maintains that higher earnings bracket for approximately 5 years (and what healthy person works only 5 years and then retires forever?)

Of course, there will be people who go to free college and not perform well - so just double that 5 year to 10 year and away we go.

I found the breakup platforming to be abnormally obnoxious - despite the game actually having speed gates to time travel being apropos to sonic's abilities.

If you consider Sonic 2 and 3 to be among the best Sonics, then I'd say Sonic CD is the perfect sequel to Sonic 1... it has all the best and worst aspects of Sonic 1 so if you are a Sonic 1 purist then I can legitimately see liking Sonic CD a lot.

I finally finished it (Rescue ending) and, well, ...

Was it just a product of its time? Perhaps it was a stellar piece of ludocinema... 12 years ago. That's the same year as Modern Warfare and Portal, both which have strong plotcentric stories and are executed in different ways.

At the time, the darker and more cerebral aspects of BioShock probably would have stood out among its contemporaries. I mean, if you were to compare BioShocks storytelling, plot, and general feel to, say, Metroid Prime 3, Phantom Hourglass, HL2 Episode Two or Uncharted - I would certainly have said BioShock has them beat.

But forget the gameplay... gameplay is a slog and one of the few games where you are practically invincible after you power up a little bit despite how OHKO weak you are at the start (played on the 2nd highest difficulty)... combat never really ramps up and I found myself using my nearly infinite $500 to hack things as a TIME saver since I didn't want to bother any more. Plus I think there were too many guns since there were so many I never used... but that's not really a problem, Dead Space and HalfLife are the same, although not as extreme as, say, Turok.

So lets get back to the story.

I think the problem is the pre and post "twist" stories are so disconnected. I enjoyed the exploration and lore of Rapture... did not enjoy an idle revenge quest embedded within someone else's revenge quest.

While I often hear this game as an exploration of Objectivism, and I haven't read Atlus Shrugged to make any comparisons, there was a lot of appeal to Rapture and Andrew Ryan's world view... if it was ever an option to AGREE with him, I probably would have taken it (cue the twist afterwards). I would have enjoyed more economic discussion amongst some of the earlier characters htough... IE: A mechanic is a parasite to the doctor, until something breaks; An artist is a parasite to the philistine "Doubter"... the expected link is the sharing of capital and currency; the mechanic gets his medical and the doctor gets his junk fixed - dubiously missing from the plot... instead displaying the narcissistic endpoint of this world view, massive disarray and lack of maintenance. The Doctor has no time for the mechanic, and his lab is flooded and covered in convenient boss melting oils. The Artist gives an inch to keep things orderly, and is betrayed immediately for it. ...

and I forgot what happened to the Mechanic, his was the crashiest level in the game...

I think the ultimate message is that Andrew Ryan's hubris forced him to ignore Fontaine, thinking he was a perfect model of the unrestricted capitalistic machine/Great Chain - only to later find out he was a, like, Alpha-Parasite... one who parasites off other parasites of his own creation thanks to the parasite-creation goop that is Plasmids.

Now I have finished it... (Someone on the Steam forum suggested changing the game to single-core affinity and it worked, didn't crash after that)

and frankly, ... not as good as Bioshock 2.

I was getting interested in the exploration of the unrestricted professionalism in the world of Rapture... but after the "mid-point", the plot kinda derped; but it's possible the late game is different if I Harvested instead of Rescued.

If anything, it seems like the true message of the game is that no matter what your outlook on ethics, morality, government, economy are... there's always a vice pusher ready to take it down... a virus, someone who parasites other parasites.
