I finished your video game! As a long time fan of Dragon Ball games and especially Dragon Ball RPGs going back to Legend of the Super Saiyan on the Super Famicom, I was looking forward to this one for a long time. Is it a Game of the Year contender? Absolutely not. Did I still really enjoy it? You betcha! At the very least this the best DBZ RPG they've ever made surpassing both the previous mentioned Legend of the Super Saiyan, but also the Legacy of Goku games on GBA and Attack of the Saiyans on DS. They crafted a semi-open world that runs you through the entire story of DBZ in a single game (for the first time ever in an RPG), gave it a BT/Xenoverse type of battle system and filled it full of beautfiul cutscenes that recreate some of the most iconic moments of the series. I spent more time than I would like to admit just completely ignoring the story though and just searching every map for all the D-Medals hidden in every nook and cranny (which are needed for learning new skills on the skill tree and upgrading the training room, etc). It does feel like when you're in the actual story content you're kinda railroaded form exploring too much and just have to go from location to location, but before and after each arc there were intermissions where you can just do whatever and where most of the sidequests pop up. It also seems like most of the focus was put on the Saiyan and Frieza arcs. The Cell Games and Buu Saga feel like they kinda rushed you through its plot points and just threw all the good cutscenes at the end of each arc. I never once had to grind in this game though. I did all the story quests and sub quests along with my general exploration of every map and ended up with Mystic Gohan being level 106 and both Goku and Vegeta at 101. The rest were all lower than that because they're simply not as powerful, but you have a 3 man party so those were the 3 I mainly used. Vegeta in particular finally gets the respect he deserves as his Big Bang Attack (and its upgrades) is the most broken ability in the game. It comes out fast, has a big AoE for damage and just simply does way more damage than it probably should. You can end boss fights with that in seconds if you're of a similar level. Platinum requirements:
The rest will just happen naturally over the course of doing all of that. In the end as a video game it's good enough, but as a DBZ game it's excellent. I look forward to the DLC whenever it comes. They're promising 2 original episodes and 1 canon story episode. I can only hope it goes into Super as we haven't really gotten that story in video game format at all yet. I also may keep playing and fighting villainous parties as the level cap is actually 250, but DLC might help me get there anyway. --- |
