I'm surprised at how many game players I've heard hating the controls (not on board 8). I thought they were the best flight controls I've ever used in a game--possibly the first time I've enjoyed a space or flight game's controls.

So easy to pick up, so easy to do exactly what I want. And you can hit stuff pretty hard and it's no big deal. And the auto-pilot is very convenient.

I mean, if someone hasn't played any first person game before, I'd totally understand not being good at these space controls...but surely most gamer people have played an FPS??

My only guess is maybe they only got as far as the toy spaceship in the tutorial? Which doesn't really feel like the rest of the game's flight.

Did our entering the Eye of the Universe trigger the universe's heat death? Obviously, the entire universe dies and is created anew, but throughout the game, ours is the only star in its final stages of life, yet the whole freakin cosmos dies in the last few minutes of gameplay (signified by all those lights going out in that trippy forest), so I'm thinking our interaction or mere observation of the Eye had to be the catalyst (though since we exist in a different quantum state entirely by that point, I suppose it's possible that the last few minutes of gameplay span billions of years in game time).

Ah, when you say "throughout the game, ours is the only star in its final stages of life", that's not true--go hang out with the guy at the campfire on Ember Twin, talk to him mid-way through the time loop, and then again and the end of the time loop, and they'll have some interesting stuff to point out for you!

Or if you don't feel like loading up the game, I'll tell you: all the other stars in the sky are also exploding as the 22 minutes pass!

I am a big Last Jedi fan because I super love the Luke stuff in the movie, it's just so funny and relatable to me. I also generally like stories that break conventions just for the sake of it, for example, I loved that Rey had no parents--I despise that trope of characters being surprise-related to each other, and I blame Empire for popularizing it. I also really like that red throne room scene visually. ...Then there's some other stuff in the movie that I don't care about, but that's true of all movies because I hate movies anyway.

Next is probably Force Awakens which has a long list of fun stuff, everything with Han, everything on Jakku. Also, a lot of cool music stuff going on I think? And then the rest of the movie I don't care that much for.

Return of the Jedi's first 45 minutes are exciting as hell, and then I pretty much despise the rest, even Vader's redemption feels a bit cheap to me, and I find most of the endor parts and outer space parts hilariously boring. Also _another_ two characters are related?? Ugh.

Then Rogue One I guess was all right, although I barely remember it.

Then Rise of Skywalker I somehow remember even less of, I think it put all its energy into resolving the trilogy or something. Or spent too much time undoing stuff Last Jedi did.

Finally, the prequel trilogy is absolutely unwatchable IMO, in fact I literally haven't watched III because I care so little.

(Also for the record, I like New Hope best by far, and I don't like ESB, but those are off topic.)

Admittedly, summons would be more interesting if using them was some sort of trade-off...but then many players would have avoided them entirely, and that would have been a lost opportunity for nostalgia.

For example when re-playing OG FF7 I basically never equip summons anymore, even though I have fond memoreis of them--I don't use them because equipping them hurts important stats, and using them costs so much mana, and also they're so tedious, and also they don't really feel that powerful anyway, and also they're limited use per fight IIRC.

So if it was a trade-off like that in this game, I probably would have strategically avoided them entirely once again, and that kinda would have been a bummer.

So yeah, I agree with foolmo, I like them how they are, just kinda fun to see and not terribly important.

Oooh masterpiece I'd say.

Although personally I thought a couple puzzles were too hard. Take out the harder puzzles IMO. Don't need 'em.

Also I like how it's basically a Metroid Prime game minus the combat. Platforming, outer space, scanning writings from an old civilization, lonely atmosphere, the tools are kinda like visors...the list goes on.

hmm I'm more of an album sort of person when listening to music, but I do very often put on these particular songs without listening to the album:

  1. The Grudge
  2. Hooker with a plz don't ban me
  3. Pneuma
Hmm I should do that with "H." as well, that song is cool, I never listen to that album anymore because I don't want to sit through Eulogy, I'm too sick of it. Actually, I never listen to any of the albums anymore except for Lateralus and the new one, 'cause they all have stuff I'm too sick of and don't wanna hear.

The Tool song I'm most impressed by might be Reflection, but I usually wouldn't want to listen to it without the album around it...

Forgotten gem!

It's like Ocarina of Time but with a much bigger emphasis on a fun story, fun characters, good jokes, lots of dialogue. Amazingly, it was fully voice acted, and IIRC pretty darn good voice acting, especially considering the time period.

I much prefer Musashi's gameplay over OoT's as well since it's top-down, so the controls are easier, so they can throw you into a lot more wild combat situations, and no janky camera, no janky first-person mode.

There's still plenty of exploration too, lots of heart pieces and other collectibles.

Also this song is the most adventure-inspiring song ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0J4X9oq4Lk&list=PL4A9348AFB63EBB15&index=26

I know there's some gigantic Desert Golfing fans on this board, just heard about this sequel and started playing it, I think it just came out maybe? It's on apple store as well.

So far I'm loving it.

Fundamentally, it's the same game--in fact, if you didn't play the original that much, you probably wouldn't even be able to tell what's different. But there's just a whole bunch of incredibly small tweaks, that totally re-invigorate my excitement about the gameplay.

I recommend playing it yourself and discovering the new features as you play, but here's a spoiler list of what I've noticed so far:

  • Many surfaces are curves instead of straight lines.
  • The ball is slightly bigger.
  • The hole is slightly wider.
  • The ball visually gets some spin on it after a bounce, which affects how it bounces and rolls after that (don't think it affects air movement). Love this change. Unless I'm super dumb and it was always like this and less visible.
  • If the ball goes off the screen...the screen scrolls, instead of your ball getting reset.
  • Some stages are multi-screen.

Yeah those are pretty good rules. The "Only change clothes while in town" one I came up with as well, for my second playthrough, because it sounded more fun to have to decide what clothes to wear on each mini-adventure, rather than swap at will.

The map restrictions are not my kinda thing though, the map is like 60% of the fun of the game for me! Staring at it, exploring it, unlocking pieces of it, marking things...so much fun.

Low point for me was hojo's lab, just such a long, repetitive dungeon, and I just wanted it over with to get to the end game stuff I was anticipating to be sooner.

Plot is an interesting category, I think both series are mostly games with little plot throughout, but good late-game twists. Metroid 2, Super Metroid, yep, good late-game twists. Aria of Sorrow, SotN, OoE, also all have good late-game twists.

A few metroid games went more heavy into plot: Prime 3 and Other M, and I think these were both pretty disastrous. Fusion also has heavy plot and it's a good one, but it also ruins the game a bit--I don't think I'll ever finish Fusion again, because the navigation room scenes are so tedious to sit through.

The castlevania games that went heavy into plot did a much better job I think, I love the story in both Curse of Darkness and Lament of Innocence, Lament probably has the best "story" of any metroid or castlevania. (People seem to like the Lords of Shadow plot as well, I never finished it though, didn't like the gameplay.)

Bloodstained also arguably went "heavy" into its plot, and it wasn't that great, but I'd give it points for several good late-game twists.

I loooove Bloodstained, really hard to choose between that and SotN, as my favorite metroidvania. There's such a long list of super fun aspects of Bloodstained. The combat's fundamentally really good, and all the abilities you find are really fun and fairly well balanced, you can really figure out your own playstyle. And then they added so many ridiculous systems that work well, I loved the hairstyle and color customizations, and how gear shows up on your character, and picking out books to activate in the library, and building up particular stats by cooking, and even the quests were a nice addition, unlike the DS Castlevanias, where they kinda just get in your way. It's just crazy how much they packed into that game.

...But you have to admit, it's pretty ugly, and the music doesn't quite reach SotN tier. And I tried pretty hard to like the story but ehhhh it was pretty nonsense.

Separately: that Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, the retro-style action game, oooooooh baby that is a masterpiece, might be even better than Rondo.

I do love metroid, but I'm trying to think of any aspect of metroid, that I like better in metroid than castlevania...

Combat, music, variety, all definitely points for castlevania...

Atmosphere, they're pretty close, I do enjoy the lonely self-directed exploring in metroid games, especially in Fusion... but naaaah SotN's Abandoned Mines are so creepy, I gotta give this point to castlevania as well.

Visuals, tough to compare, they've both had great looking games and mediocre looking games...

But then castlevania has the whole entire ARPG aspect, that Metroid doesn't really have an answer for!

And then you've also got the classic castlevanias, some of the best action games ever? That's like a billion points to castlevania right there.

Hmmm maybe a point for metroid in the 3d games category, because Prime 1 is really good. Although I really like Curse of Darkness for the PS2...

Not really, no, mostly just visuals, and audio. You're not breaking blocks or anything, and the weapons don't feel like minecraft weapons, except perhaps the bows.

The mobs do match the behavior of their original counterparts, pretty well, though, like skeletons, creepers, tiny zombies, are examples I've seen so far, and some others. I think they're all pretty fun to fight with these mechanics and controls. There are also some enemies I don't recognize.

I'm a couple hours in, I'm liking it a lot, it's definitely not amazing or anything though, yeah pretty much a simplified Diablo 3. Simplified in the sense that there are no classes, it's shorter, hardly any story, fewer events generated in the levels, and simpler loot system.

However, there are interesting/enjoyable choices to make when you do find loot that is a comparable quality melee/chestpiece/bow to what you have: once you equip it, you'll see it has a random set of perks, and you get to activate some of them. In the end I think I end up enjoying swapping gear a little bit more in this game than Diablo 3, because in Diablo 3 I'm usually just comparing numbers (until reaching like endgame Diablo 3 and making specific builds or something, but I don't even usually enjoy that very much).

I'm also finding the combat a little better than diablo as well, I find myself anticipating enemy attacks more, and attacking or moving at more carefully decided moments. In diablo I pretty much spam without much thought, unless I'm at a hard part, and then I just kinda backpedal kite and attack.

And my favorite aspect of all is, it's extremely pretty to look at, love the colors and UI and intricate environments.

I imagine diablo's replay value will blow this out of the water, but I'm enjoying this a bunch for now.

I love the combat, I think it's brilliant.

...Buuuuuut while I'm participating in the combat, I often kinda feel frustrated, and have to remind myself that I like it, and try to ignore the frustration.

For one thing, it's very unusual to have a game where you can dodge and block but you're basically guaranteed to be taking damage throughout a fight. In most games, taking damage means you made a mistake, well, except in turn-based games (like original FF7, or most RPGs) where you're clearly taking turns hurting each other, and there's clearly no avoiding it.

...But in FF7R, you're not necessarily taking turns hitting each other, you're fully participating in the action. I often felt bad about healing during a fight--I'd have to logically remind myself that this was okay and expected, I'm expected to be healing a lot just like the original FF7, I shouldn't feel bad.

The other main frustration is when there are boss-like enemies that just take excruciatingly long to kill if you don't understand the trick, or if you simply didn't bring the correct magic element. There were 2 or 3 bosses in the game that took me over 45 minutes to kill (one single fight, without starting over) because I didn't bring the right stuff. That's way too long to be in one fight.

But on the other hand, I admit, it was fantastic how every encounter felt quite fresh and unique, throughout the game. In the original game, 95% of the fights felt identical.

Anyway, what impresses me most about the combat is how differently everyone approaches it, and successfully. I've watched several streamers play through the game after I finished, and they all had extremely different styles, and I could tell everyone in the chats had very different advice as well.

High level thinking though, I think Game 2 beginning and ending with Nibelheim would be ideal. Chapter 1 Kalm flashback, which can also serve as the tutorial (for the rare new player, or for any battle system changes they've implemented since the first game). Ending in either Nibelheim (or Mt. Nibel) to bring it full circle, plus the fact there's plenty of cloaked men around and Sephiroth in the basement. Shinra Mansion itself isn't really enough for a final battle area though...

Oh I love the idea of starting and ending with nibelheim, but yeah in the OG game almost nothing interesting happens in nibelheim and mt nibel, so they'd definitely have to add some stuff. There's totally room for them to add stuff though!

colliding posted...
Game Four: I think it's possible to finish the rest of the game here. Also I wouldn't mind if the plot of this game is completely new. Scenes I would like to see however are Aerith's parents in Ice Glacier. Cloud going bonkers, Tifa escape sequence, Three separate parties looking for huge materia (including some wacky new party members like Zack, Roche, and Reno), Tifa saving Cloud in the lifestream, Vincent flashback, optional Weapon superbosses and a new final dungeon. I never liked the original's tbh. And yeah, obviously "Under the Highwind" has to make an appearance to some degree.

All right yeaaah this does seem like a really good game...still maybe a little too short though!! But ok, get some Roche stuff in there and I'm set.

I'm finding it sooooo hard to guess where they would end part 2, if it's gonna be a 3 part series.

The two big mid-game climaxes left are sooooo far into the game... For example, there isn't that much content after the northern cave in the original game, mostly just short fetch quests to previous areas, and then a bunch of finale fights without much new plot development. And the other climax I can think of, at the city of ancients, is only like a couple of hours before it, so it wouldn't help that much...

I also imagine they would want to save some playable characters for the 3rd game...

So I'd say game 2 would mostly be flashback, fort condor, junon, mt. corel, gold saucer, cosmo canyon, and stick wutai in somehow too? Which honestly seems like a pretty jam-packed game. Not really a good climax there, maybe they would just invent a new part, that would be exciting to finish with. New playable characters would be red, yuffie, cait sith.

Then game 3 would mostly be nibelheim, rocket town, temple of ancients, city of ancients, snow stuff, northern cave, more junon, mideel, lifestream, more midgar, finale... New characters would be vincent and cid.

(Biiiig doom fan here, classic doom is my #1 game of all time, and doom 2016 is my #6.)

I'm pretty conflicted about eternal...

Visually, I think it's the best looking piece of media ever created. The skyboxes alone are physically jaw-dropping, the level environments wildly mesmerizing in their intricate creativity and variety. The gory creatures and animations and glory kills are so cool I 100% can't believe video games are capable of it.

The combat and gameplay, just such a fresh, impressive, ingenious take on action gameplay, especially for the shooter genre. The most satisfying abilities and effects I've felt in video games, swinging that crucible, spamming that chaingun turret mode, nailing that sticky bomb on an arachnotron turret...The sounds and music do a ton of the work here, in addition to the visuals, again.

...But...on the other hand, it's just so tiring to play. I'm not necessarily having what I would call "fun". I'm getting satisfaction, yes, definitely. I'm entering into an incredible trance, sure. But I'm just not sure I can call it fun. The missions...they're just so long. I can't make it through an entire level without exiting to take a break. And the combat...I'm kinda following the rules they've set up, I'm not really "playing", I'm "doing". I'm doing all the things they're forcing me to do, mostly just keeping up with my resources, not gleefully murdering like I want to.

And I've been trying to say the platforming was fine, there wasn't that much of it, it's not a big deal...but by the end of the game, I was really sick of it. You jump to a wall, look around to where to jump next. That's it. Over and over. The platforming was better in the first game, I might even say. I enjoyed the first game's argent tower level, that was pretty fun to climb!

(And my biggest gripe: I hated grabbing walls. Half the time I grab a wall, I suddenly start falling, and have to grab the wall again. I have tried every combination of button presses, it kept happening. )

Story and stuff was good though.

So in the end, I think I prefer 2016 better. I admit that Eternal is more interesting, more impressive, all that stuff, but I enjoyed 2016 more, and I think I'll be going back to 2016 more often in the future.

Mine is definitely: Half-Blood Prince > Prisoner of Azkaban > Deathly Hallows > Chamber of Secrets >>> Goblet of Fire > Order of the Phoenix > Sorcerer's Stone

Movies: Azkaban > Prince > Chamber > Hallows 2 > Hallows 1 >>> Stone > Goblet > Phoenix

Ugh, I get that the book is polarizing but I thought most people agreed that Prince was far and away the weakest movie.

Ooh I reckon I like movie 6 best because: it's the funniest movie of the series, like in terms of jokes/amusing stuff, like the Felix Felicis stuff, all the quidditch and romance stuff, the music even. And I always thought the humor was one of the most important parts of the series--the whole thing is bit of a satire about how adults act.

I also really enjoy the atmosphere: light-heartedness in a dark time, finding ways to enjoy life when everything in the world is at its worst. Feels good. Harry especially is at his most likeable in this movie--confident and fun.

I'd say the only issue I have with movie 6 is probably how the flashbacks got mostly cut, those were fantastic in the book. But I have to admit, I think most movies are too long (in general), so I'm ok with cutting things.

-----

I'd say the worst movie has to be 5--there's no mystery going on like all the other movies, the plot seems incoherent (IMO), Harry is emo, the visual balance is way too dark unless you have a bright TV, and a lot of really good stuff was cut, like the St Mungos stuff.

The best parts of book 5 IMO were the news/ongoings the trio kept hearing about in the outside world, about all the dark things going on in the world, and that context is pretty missing from movie 5.

Just saw this movie! Expected it to be totally uninteresting...

...but instead, I absolutely loved it, one of the best comedies I've ever seen, just an outstanding number of good jokes. A few lame jokes, but that's always gonna happen. Great, relatable characters and themes too, I found. I even liked Sonic as a character a lot, and usually I hate that type of annoying energetic character.

I love the original story...

But it could be much better. I'm hoping these are signs they're taking steps to build on it a lot more.

by the way, if you're playing Doom with a modified exe like GZDoom to make it more convenient to customize controls or to get higher-resolution, remember that jumping is not allowed in the original game, and looking up/down is also not allowed =] so disable those if you can, they're cheating!

but you're perhaps playing through Steam or something, so nevermind, this wouldn't apply =]

TopicWhat are some things to Cleveland and Pittsburgh?

I'm from Cleveland =]

If you're into museums, the Cleveland Art Museum is super super good, and it's free. Huge and very pleasant to walk around in.

Across the street is Severance Hall, a beautiful building where the Cleveland Orchestra plays, supposedly one of the five best in the country. Seeing a concert might be a big timesink if you're only going to be here one day though.

Both of those are in University Circle, a walkable campus area on the eastern-edge of the city, as well as a few other landmarks and museums, and not much interesting food, but the "Little Italy" part of town is in there too, which has some bakeries and italian restaurants.

It doesn't sound cool, but also in University Circle is the gigantic beautiful Lakeview Cemetary, which has a lot of interesting hills and nature stuff, and a couple landmarks like a chapel, a big dam, and a monument to president garfield which takes the form of a castle you can walk up and get a great view of the city. In March it might not be that fun to checkout lakeview cemetary, probably no leaves and probably pretty cold. Fall is best. But still pretty cool.

All of that (university circle) is like 4 miles east of Downtown. Personally I'm not into Downtown much. Apparently there's incredible food but I've always found it overhyped. Then again I'm an idiot into chain restaurants and taco bell, so what do I know.

Main stuff downtown is clubs, sports arenas, maybe a comedy club somewhere, but mostly food. The rock n roll hall of fame is downtown near the shore, but I found that a huge disappointment personally, even though I'm definitely a music fan. Just felt like a lot of old discarded clothes from 70s musicians. The science center is next door, but I think that's more for kids. Oh, playhouse square is downtown, for plays, but I have not been there. I think there's a new casino somewhere downtown too?

My favorite thing about Cleveland is the parks, hikes, and national park, but none of that will be great in March, and 1 day is not enough time to really enjoy it anyway.

Winter: 72F but still feel cold and usually keep a space heater nearby (also I take it down to 68 while sleeping)

Summer: 76 or 77F but crank it down to 71F while sleeping

I've never heard of anyone going below like 65, I'm shocked that's possible to survive in
