I could see her apologizing if she actually attempted to sound asian, but she didn't even change her voice for the role that much.
I'm sure most people probably thought Diane was white.

Yeah I think it'd be one thing if she played a character for whom race was a really big part of her identity but Diane's ethnicity is barely brought up in the show so it's honestly not that big of a deal. Hell the show even points out that she knows nothing about her actual race of origin

Her being Vietnamese was barely touched upon in the show - I seem to recall one episode where she goes to Vietnam and actually finds out she knows nothing about the country/culture

Anime brings up a great point actually.

It's basically majority japanese characters, dubbed mostly by white actors.

Yeah that's a good point. The whole purpose of localization is to make it palatable for a foreign audience. Are they going to hold exclusively Japanese-American casting for anime VAs now?

And what if China or Japan wants to dub an American cartoon into Chinese/Japanese? Do they have to find white Americans who speak fluent Chinese/Japanese to work as VAs? Good luck there

I randomly had an ant problem last summer and used a couple of those Terro ant traps and after like two days there were no more ants and havent seen any since. Just put them in your kitchen.

I haven't seen any ants in my kitchen

I killed an ant in my room and an ant in the bathroom (this jackass was climbing on the tile wall of my bathroom) so I put the baits there but they still haven't gone for it. Maybe they'll do it at night when I'm asleep

I had a black professor and a black TA.

Never had a Black teacher in my life, although there were a few in my elementary school. When I moved out to the suburbs, I don't think a single Black person worked in my school district

Oh they will. Put those out last year and one of them was black with dead ants

See I'm not sure if I'm putting it in the right place. I put carpenter ant bait and that Terro ant bait side by side hoping the ants will go for one of them (not sure if they're carpenter ants...man I hope not)

Also I put some perimeter ant killer so maybe they're not getting into the house cause they're getting killed by the perimeter insecticide. I called a pest control company just in case and I saved the corpse of the dead ant I crushed so that I can have them identify it. Hopefully not carpenter ants. I have a tenant who lives in the same house so I can't be having an ant problem

Yeah but let's be honest, the people who care a lot about things like cultural appropriation are also the ones who'll tell you that STEM fields are prejudiced against women. Maybe if they care so much about women being in STEM fields, they shouldn't give the women in STEM such a hard time over an incredibly small and minor thing.

And I get that it's a dumb thing to do but let's be real, the fact that people care that much about it is rather telling also

And looking at her twitter the people most outraged about it are other women which, well...

this is actually on her. Why did she cosplay on such a solemn occasion? Would you dress like a ninja for your disertation?

And I get that, but it's weird that if someone wears something dumb to a PhD defense, it's what they wear, and not the defense itself that gets the attention - all the time you hear about how we need more women in STEM and how STEM is so prejudiced against women, yet when a woman goes out and gets a PhD in a STEM field and wears a stupid dress during it, the dress overshadows everything else and that's what everybody is going to talk about because of a very small segment of the population that's incredibly offended that a woman "appropriated" a dress worn by some people in Mexican culture which appropriated that same dress from old-world European colonial fashion

It's somewhat unfortunate that if a woman goes out and gets a doctoral degree in Bioinformatics from a prestigious university, the only thing that garners her any recognition or attention is her choice of dress

This has always been especially weird to me since virtually all of those restaurants are owned and staffed entirely by first and second generation Chinese immigrants. It would be one thing if it was Joes Wanton Shack but telling actual Chinese people what real Chinese food is seems pretty iffy.

I 100% agree

It's also a big coincidence that most of the people I find who complain about the "authenticity" of Americanized things are also usually people who don't speak that culture's language. The Chinese-Americans I know who complain about PF Chang's being "white people's Chinese food" are usually the ones who barely speak any Chinese at all and have no understanding of Chinese culture. The Chinese people who came to this country 30 years ago with no money in hand are the ones who not only couldn't give a shit...they're the ones owning these restaurants and cooking the "Americanized" dishes to make a living

For one, I'll say that many items offered at places like Panda Express aren't bad, and they're not as far from "authentic" Chinese culture as a lot of idiots claim them to be.

Saying something isn't authentic and complaining about cultural appropriation are the same thing?

I guess not entirely, but it's usually the same people who complain about it. It's the assertion that they have the right to determine how things ought to be done - if you cook Chinese food, it has to be done *MY WAY* with *MY* seal of approval. Like, I'm a second-generation Chinese American, and I freaking love Americanized Chinese food, even though it's not really the same thing we eat over in Asia, and I'm thrilled that non-Chinese people eat it, because that has raised millions of Chinese immigrant families out of poverty.

In reality, most immigrants do not care. I'm a second-generation immigrant and I've heard my people my own age complain about Americanized Chinese restaurants appropriating their cuisine and cooking it in a way that's "not authentic." I've never heard an older Chinese person who actually lived in China/Taiwan/Hong Kong complain about that, because they're smart enough to know that culture adapts and changes over time and if white Americans want to eat hot and sour soup their own way, who gives a shit?

What makes that dress quincenera-specific? The style just looks like a classical dress, a European little princess dress.

Yeah it's just a puffy ballroom dress worn by Europeans in the middle ages and eventually became part of Mexican culture because of colonization

Honestly I've found that, in my own experience, the people who get the *most* upset by so-called "cultural appropriation" are usually either white people overcompensating *or* second-generation immigrants who have serious insecurities about the fact that they're minorities who don't speak their parents' language well and can't really identify with their parents' culture so they're super defensive about "authentic food".

Like, I've never heard a 60-year-old Chinese person complain about Panda Express or take-out Chinese food, but you hear Chinese-Americans in their 20's who can't speak a word of Chinese talk about how "not authentic" it is all the time, and about how it's "not as good as the original"

This defeatism is exactly why I pity America. You guys realize you are very far behind right?

Behind in what way? Real life is not a dick measuring contest. Having high-speed rail just for the sake of having it is a waste of money. Infrastructure projects are expensive and building them just for the sake of building them is a waste.

KamenRiderBlade posted...
It makes no sense to fund that many rail lines that are losing money.

Exactly. I think what we definitely *should* invest in are a few high-speed lines that connect certain regions, but they have to be planned in conjunction with local governments.

For example, if Florida wanted to build a rail system connecting, Tampa, Orlando, Miami, and Jacksonville, that would actually be a good idea. But it'd be useless unless you actually built some local transportation in those 4 cities. What you need people to be able to do is go from Miami to Orlando and then once they get to Orlando they have ways to around without driving.

That's why improving the high-speed rail between NY and Boston would be good, since those are both cities with well-developed local transit lines, so you can go from NYC to wherever you need to in Boston without ever needing a car. But it's just not a wise idea in cities where the population density is so widespread.

I do think that cities need to invest more money into urbanization and improving urban transit. After that then you can have a conversation about connecting cities by high-speed rail. The key thing in China is that most of their cities actually have mass transit that takes you everywhere so that a car is a luxury, not a necessity. The parts of the country that could use this type of rail would be Boston-NY-Philadelphia-Washington DC, Miami-Tampa-Orlando, Dallas-Austin-Houston-San Antonio, and of course California, but we need those places to actually develop local transit first.

China has bullet trains because it has population which is centered in metro areas that have access to mass transit. So if you're in Beijing, you can hop over to Tianjin and take the Tianjin subway to go wherever you want.

In the USA you can't really do that. Say a train existed that connected Dallas and San Antonio. Once you get to San Antonio, how do you get around? There's no metro system or subway system, so you'd have to rent a car. Therefore, might as well drive one

In the books, Hermione seemed portrayed as a rather plain-looking character who became rather attractive when she actually put in the effort. Ginny, on the other hand, became so pretty that even guys from Slytherin had to admit that she was gorgeous.

That's what makes it hard when casting child actors for a series like that - you never know how they're going to turn out. Reminds me of Modern Family when they cast Ariel Winter to play the nerdy daughter Alex - that certainly wasn't in the plans.
