these things were not designed to be more challenging they were designed to keep you playing for as long as possible

Pretty much. The line between tedium and challenge can be pretty thin sometimes (the aforementioned example of Monster Hunter's QoL changes struggled with that line in that some "QoL" improvements actually made the game easier instead of just less tedious), but the number of people that completely conflate them is just silly.

What I never got were the WoW players that got outright angry about lowering the level requirement for mounts from 40 to 30 and making them more affordable. I played Vanilla from launch. Walking everywhere pre-mount was not a fun time. It was not challenging, it did not take skill, it did not feel like an accomplishment, it was just tedious. I'm all for delaying gratification here and there so that reaching milestones feels meaningful, but being upset that some unnecessary tedium was eliminated was just baffling.

at least 100+ of gameplay, and high replay value after,

As much as playtime/dollar is really the only objective metric of value that exists for games, it's really not a great one to cite because it overvalues game length. I'd much, much rather spend 3 hours of continuous fun playing a game that ends without overstaying its welcome than 100 hours slogging through 95 hours of padding, even if the games are the same price. Similarly, replay value only really matters if the game is genuinely fun to replay, not if it's tacked on there to create the illusion of extra value. The attitude that longer/more replayable=better is largely responsible for gratuitous grindy RPG mechanics and multiplayer modes being tacked on to games, which really isn't a good thing.

Also, 100+ hours is kind of a ridiculous standard. Even at $80 or $90, that's still less than a dollar per hour of entertainment, which is an incredibly good ratio compared to almost any other entertainment media. Personally, I treat $6/hour as a reasonable minimum, which is about what it costs to see a movie in theatres. It's really, really easy to get a whole lot more than that (just recently, PSO2 gave me over 400 hours and all I spent was a very voluntary $5 for a fourth character slot), which is always fun, but that minimum means ~10 hours out of a $60 game, which is pretty consistently doable and not unreasonable.

Take her to Walmart (or similar) and let her pick out one she likes and can be adjusted to her size. She gets the fun of a shopping trip with FatalUncle, she gets one she likes that you know will fit her, but you won't be spending a lot of money on something she'll have outgrown within a couple years. Maybe check with her parents first to make sure they're game for teaching her to ride it (since it'll most likely be them and not you putting in the actual work), but otherwise, that'll be your best bet.

That's mostly Diablo 3's power creep, which is a consequence of trying to keep it interesting season after season (since merely making it to the same point you achieved a year ago isn't as interesting as pushing further). I'm sure you can reach a point where going any further requires some more serious grinding.

That said, the nature of D3's itemization is that you pretty quickly get the legendaries you need to enable a build (which are basically mandatory if you want to be able to farm at a quasi-decent rate), then spend the rest of the season farming for different rolls that will provide incremental upgrades, which isn't the most engaging paradigm. Being locked out of a build being viable because a build-enabling legendary won't drop isn't much fun, so going too far in the other direction isn't ideal, but making it too easy means you stop getting meaningful gear drops a little too quickly. I think the magnitude of most set bonuses is just too great, since it simply isn't possible to balance a game around a 50,000% increase to a skill's damage without having that skill be largely worthless without that boost.

In general, if both the uninfected person and the infected person are wearing masks, and especially if distancing is also more or less maintained, the risk of transmission during everyday activities is quite low. Goggles would further reduce that risk (for the uninfected person, they won't do much of anything for the infected), but that's rarely going to be worthwhile enough to justify the discomfort and cost. For particularly high-risk people or people engaging in riskier activities (such as flying or working in health care), though, it's easier to recommend them.

It has gotten substantially easier to make omelettes since I got an actual non-stick pan (albeit a $5 Ikea one, though it's honestly way better than I was expecting for that price). Stainless steel isn't exactly ideal for eggs. The pan's still too small to actually cook a 4-egg omelette all the way through, but it does mean I can get a spatula under a smaller one without immediately rending it asunder.

More so, moving away from that, you can look at sequels in a series to get an idea for the trend. A great case-in-point is Pokemon S/S, which is by far the most gimped generation.

Meanwhile, many consider BotW to be one of the best Zelda games (I disagree, but that's just my opinion) and Odyssey to be one of the best Mario games (because it is). Dad of Boy is widely considered to be an excellent addition to the GoW series (if not actually the best), Bloodborne is many people's favourite Soulsborne (not technically a series entry, but still eligible to identify a trend in game quality) and Dark Souls 3 the favourite for many others. Looking at third party titles, Witcher 3 is far and away the most universally acclaimed game in the series, Sonic Mania is considered to be among the series' best offerings (though the Sonic series is a ridiculous roller coaster of quality and identifying any sort of trend there is a bit of a fool's errand), and I believe some of this generation's Assassin's creed games are generally considered to be among the best in the series (admittedly, I haven't paid any attention at all to the series).

Yeah, you can look at some series and find that this generation has seen their worst games, but that's far from universal enough to generalize into a trend that's affecting all of gaming. Especially considering that many series (particularly in the AAA market) tend to decline in quality over time anyway as the developers run out of interesting ideas but publishers want to keep milking the brand recognition and finding ways to make subsequent entries more profitable (see: Dead Space 3).

Zeus posted...
And my increasing apathy is a pretty f***ing solid sign for how much s*** has declined.

Not really. There are plenty of reasons for becoming apathetic, including simply losing interest in gaming because your interests are changing as you age. Heck, having too many good games available to buy can result in apathy because the overwhelming number of choices results in decision paralysis and it's easier to just give up on caring than to feel bad about missing something you probably would have enjoyed. I know I pretty frequently look at my Steam library with the intent of playing something new from my backlog, but the sheer number of options makes that decision so difficult that I just boot up DotA for the millionth time instead. That means I'm actually not buying all that many games anymore simply because I struggle to justify it due to my fairly stagnant backlog.

Perhaps the biggest difference, though, is that the market for games is larger than ever before, such that it takes some actual effort to stay on top of all of the good stuff that comes out (particularly where so many of the games that have the budget to dominate the advertising market are either glorified scratch tickets or games you already know about (or both)). If busy with work or other non-gaming aspects of life, or even just not engaged enough to bother with the effort of looking for recommendations, you can miss out on quite a lot, which can create the illusion of a dearth of good games.

Quite simply, there are plenty of good games out there. That so many people are so quick to disagree with your sentiment of "the quality of games is declining" should tell you that the problem is actually with you, whether because you're just not enjoying the hobby as much anymore or because you've failed to keep up with the good stuff. You shouldn't be fighting that. You should be trying to figure out exactly what the issue is so you can fix it (either stop trying to force yourself to like games and seek new hobbies, or start asking for recommendations) and have more fun because - all other things being equal - more fun is better than less fun.

wwinterj25 posted...
Seems silly to do that when it's current gen. You do you though.

Eh, I'd agree that there's a substantial period where new consoles can still be considered something other than the current generation, largely because the vast majority of the gaming community's discussion doesn't take it into account because hardly anyone is playing the new stuff (what new stuff olololol). The generation has technically started, but calling it "current" when it has nothing to do with most people's current experience doesn't make a lot of sense. "New gen" would be more accurate than "next gen," but it's kind of awkward to create a new term just to refer to such a transient period, so "next gen" continues to be used.

While I understand the practicality of having some over-sized buttons, it shouldn't have just been that one button since most games you're not just relying on one button no matter how much you use it.

While true, it's not like the other buttons were any harder to hit than they are on any other controller. It made A very comfortable to hit without sacrificing anything else. Making it much larger would have made the other buttons harder to hit, which would have been bad, but as it stood, I liked it a lot. The only real drawback was that it was basically impossible to hit B at the same time as X or Y, but that wasn't something that came up a lot.

Good scrambled and omelettes are about controlling the heat in contact with the egg.

I do this for a living. Constantly moving the cooked egg and exposing the uncooked egg to the heat is key. My omelettes and scrambled are so fluffy.

The heat part is easy. I'm quite capable of cooking good scrambled eggs. The only difficulty is in flipping the omelette without turning it into scrambled eggs, which has nothing to do with heat control.

For another, I'm inclined to wait a bit longer to ensure the vaccine is safe. June-July, maybe, but not April and certainly not sooner than that.

From how I understand it, you need to get first dose, and a second dose 4 weeks later. The reasoning is since some people get covid a second time, a quick booster will allow your body to get the idea to keep the anti bodies, instead of getting rid of them. Not sure if thats it, but thats how I understand it.

That's the gist of it. You get stronger, longer-lasting immunity with a booster shot than from a single dose. That's why Hep B's vaccine is delivered in three shots, HPV in two, and there are a bunch of newborn/toddler vaccines that get repeated several times over those first few years.

While true, I don't particularly remember calling the previous generation "current gen" during that period. It becomes "last gen" pretty much as soon as a new round of systems come out, even though those new ones are called "next gen" for a while.

Krazy_Kirby posted...
you assume our health system is competent enough to not recount people?

That's really not a particularly high standard of competence. Every test result is personally identifiable (it has to be in order to communicate results), plus already-positive people that are getting retested will have that identified as their reason for being tested.

Furthermore, even if we assume that all numbers are being grossly inflated by clerical errors and the real numbers are, say, a quarter of that (bearing in mind that an assumption of that magnitude is completely baseless and utterly absurd), is that not still a concerning number of infections and deaths? That would still be ~300,000 cases and 65,000 deaths in 8 months, with no sign of slowing down. That's still an enormous number for an infectious disease and absolutely warrants a public response (and, again, there's absolutely no reason to believe the numbers are anywhere close to that low).

My girlfriend does actually follow Dance Moms (I don't particularly understand why, since it's generally just people being obnoxious for cameras, but we've all got our guilty pleasures), including some of the behind-the-scenes drama, and by the sounds of things, Sia's got kind of an unhealthy obsession with Maddie, to the point of a whole lot of people being concerned about grooming. I have absolutely no difficulty believing that she made this casting decision not because she actually feels that Maddie portrays autism or the character better than any actual autistic actresses could have, but because she wanted to give a big movie role to her favourite little girl. Being so defensive about it and lashing out like she is is kind of just reinforcing that belief for me.

More broadly, I don't have a fundamental problem with using non-autistic actors to portray austistic characters, provided they do it well (Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, for example, was amazing), but the attitude of "autistic people can't handle this role" is generally pretty awful and people should try to avoid letting it influence their casting decisions as much as possible.

Also, the fact that I'm mostly aware of Maddie as like a 12-year-old makes the "is she hot?" thing reeeeeally creepy, even by usual Duckbear standards. Especially when I'm pretty sure a couple of those pictures are actually from her early teen years. Not okay, dude.

how many of the deaths are from people who died from something unrelated?

In the sense of "they died in a car crash but then we tested them for covid and they were positive so now they're a covid death"? Virtually none. As much as paranoid anti-maskers would love to believe that every ambulance has some guy waiting with a Covid swab to test every dead person they find, postmortem testing isn't really a thing unless there's reason to suspect Covid was involved. In the sense of "They were covid positive and then they died of bacterial pneumonia"? Probably a non-trivial number, but it's extremely difficult to conclusively say that there was no relation between death of pneumonia and any respiratory comorbidities a person may have, such that counting those deaths as Covid-related is the only sensible way to document them.

Krazy_Kirby posted...
how many hospitalizations are from people going for something else, and already have the virus, but they were already discharged for that?

Virtually none. When people are hospitalized, the reason for their hospitalization is well documented, and again, a remotely competent public health agency will not cite anything other than that as their reason for being hospitalized. This is, again, presuming that their Covid infection doesn't complicate the primary reason for their hospitalization, since if it does, that absolutely should count as a Covid hospitalization.

I'm not sure why you're so desperate to insist that the statistics are being artificially inflated like this, especially when there's so much reason to believe that the complete opposite is true (I'm sure it's merely a coincidence that case numbers dropped precipitously the day after Trump decided that the CDC was no longer allowed to report them independently).

Last I checked, my thumbs were symmetrical

Your thumbs are, but controls schemes often aren't. It varies by the type of game, but most games' control schemes use the left stick more often than the D-pad and the face buttons more often than the right stick, so having the left stick and face buttons at the same level on the controller (and closest to the thumbs' neutral position) makes the most sense. Of course, there are plenty of games that use the right stick more than the face buttons (namely shooters), so a symmetrical configuration is still perfectly reasonable, but I personally prefer the asymmetrical one because it's better suited to the vast majority of the games I play (I really don't play console shooters).

I just wish the GC button layout had stuck. Having the most-used button (in a control scheme that's actually designed sensibly with the GC controller in mind) in the most neutral position for my thumb was great. I'm also not sure why the WiiU's approach to the symmetrical layout hasn't been more widely adopted, since it had both sticks in the thumbs' neutral positions (which makes the most sense for dual-stick schemes), but I guess the face buttons were a little awkward to use for schemes that used them predominantly.

I made it up to Lothric Castle, then decided to go do the Ariandel DLC and got stuck on the first boss there (Friede) and kind of drifted away a bit. And then PSO2 came out and I drifted completely away because if I hadn't I was going to suck at both games due to trying to use one game's dodge button in the other. And now I've gotten bored of PSO2 and should perhaps go back to DS3, but I'm embroiled in other games now. I'll get to it eventually.

No it doesn't.

It objectively does. Other people wearing masks substantially reduces their risk of transmitting it to me (which compounds the protection provided by my own mask), plus the further reduction in risk that stems from overall case numbers being reduced. This is not remotely up for debate. The only possible way you can argue against it is either by outright lying about what you believe (which, you know, don't.) or by willingly disregarding every single piece of data that has been collected on this pandemic (which is just plain stupid).

Just wear a mask. It's not going to hurt you, and you might save a life.

Youre contradicting yourself. What do you think he should have done? You say its impossible for him not to join the heroes and then you say that he cant be a hero.

He's not *the* hero. He can't be, because Shulk's the only one that can use the Monado. He can still be *a* hero by joining the party, but it's no secret that the whole adventure is Shulk & Friends, not a matter of everyone contributing equally. There's nothing contradictory if you recognize that there are different tiers of protagonist in the game (and in most stories, really).

The prologue was out of desperation. If he hadnt almost got himself killed Bionis would be swarmed with Mechon. Same thing with the raid, he went and got the Monado even though he wasnt strong enough to use it because he was desperate to defend the colony.

And? They're still examples of his self-destructive compulsion to be the hero, and examples where that flaw did have a clear negative effect on him. He became the hero in those situations because he felt that he had to, which is the same reason he worked himself up to the point of being able to use the Monado in the first place.

I don't get why you care what anyone else does.

Because what they do directly affects my personal risk level. Why do people struggle so much with this concept?

This is one step away from the fanboy timeline wars

Eh, BotW had some interesting lore, at least, which is what AoC is meant to expand upon (and a Warriors game is a very sensible way in which to execute that). I'd say it's fair, in this case.

True. Though, it isn't the first Hyrule Warriors. Which was something people mentioned. Which is why I don't think it would attract Zelda fans who just want more Zelda. They should know by now. That being said, if someone liked just BotW, that might be different. Which I mentioned somewhere else. Because if they wanted more BotW and bought this thinking it was more, they may be disappointed...

People should generally know better than to expect Zelda from HW, but this one is different in that it's telling a unique story that is going to be of interest to fans of BotW (as opposed to the first HW, which was a standalone crossover story that had nothing to do with any other Zelda games). To that end, I can see people who weren't necessarily fans of the first one (or gave it a miss because the gameplay didn't appeal to them) deciding to try AoC and being put off by the gameplay.

That said, youtube exists. If they want the story without the gameplay, it's not exactly hard to access it.

The sheer anti-musou/warriors bias some people have is so crazy.

To be fair, the style of game isn't for everyone, and crossovers like this in particular are going to attract people who want Zelda and get... something else. That's going to leave them less inclined to overlook minor flaws because they don't enjoy the rest of the game enough to do so.

It's why I'm pretty much ignoring reviews for the game (I often ignore reviews, but even more so here). I know there have been some less-than-flattering ones, but Warriors games rarely get reviewed well, and many of the things it's being criticized for are largely meaningless in the context of enjoying one.

A new season began yesterday, apparently. That's rather good timing on your part.

I get what you mean, though. While off-season play can still be perfectly enjoyable, the notion of a season ending soon does dissuade me from picking up a game until the new one rolls around, since they're offering an incentive that will make the game more interesting if I wait.

From the developer side, though, I can see the benefit. You're ultimately going to end up with fewer people getting back into the game at any given moment because some of those people that opted to wait will move on to other stuff, but those who do get back into it will all be starting around the same time. That means you've got more concurrent players, which translates to a more active community (both in terms of multiplayer and in terms of online discussion), which makes the game more attractive to people who are on the fence about buying it. I haven't seen detailed stats, by any means, but I suspect sales/account creations for games like this see a small boost for roughly a month or so after a new season starts (which means I doubt it's a coincidence that this one has started right before Black Friday).

You really can't. CNN's far from unbiased, but they're nowhere near as blatant about it as Fox News has always been.
