Try not to work in the living room. If you've got a spare room with not much in there to distract you, try taking your laptop in there and shut yourself in for most of the day.

Absolutely. I'm not a "lock 'em up and throw away the key" type for non-violent crimes, but I definitely believe that neighbourhoods need a breather for a spell from the selfish bastards who make life shitty for other people.

Burglary and theft aren't the same thing. I've had my home burglarized as well and understand where you're coming from but there's a wide range of theft that has nothing to do with burglarizing someone or repeat offenders, and equating the two doesn't help anyone.
totalnerdken wrote that: "prison should only be reserved for violent crimes". End of.

Which would mean no custodial sentence for career burglars, conmen who've defrauded elderly people out of their life savings, serial stalkers and habitual harassers, or a whole host of crimes that can impact hugely upon victims' lives without necessarily involving violence. When you definitively remove prison either as a deterrent or as a way of safely quarantining criminals from society, you're not giving them much incentive to stop doing what they're doing; you're handing them the freedom to continue victimizing innocent people.

I don't understand why anyone blusters about the failure right up until today to prosecute the perpetrators of other mass atrocities before, during and since WW2, but then totally undermines their own position with the argument that "if they've got away with it for this long, it seems kind of unfair to charge them now." A card they pull from the bottom of the deck only for the benefit of former Nazis.

I completely agree that in a sense, elderly Nazis are a soft target because you can safely prosecute them without the need to confront awkward questions about aspects of your own country's foreign policy over the last twenty-odd years. Witnessing how the French authorities allowed genocidaires from the former Hutu Power regime in Rwanda to live comfortably and with virtual impunity in France over the last quarter of a century makes French breast-beating and soul-searching over French complicity in the Holocaust seem like a parody of guilt.

But that's no reason for Germans, or anyone else, to give former SS concentration camp staff a get out of jail free card. We're not in some contest to see who can dish out the most exemptions from justice for the most appalling crimes -- we should be doing the opposite, as Izual said in post #157.

She's a German citizen who's been charged by a German state prosecutor's office in connection with crimes whose victims included other German citizens. But apparently some fuckwits here think she shouldn't be charged because the state prosecutor's office hasn't charged anyone for Pol Pot's crimes in Cambodia. Jesus Christ.

I'd even argue that theft (until a certain dollar value) shouldn't be punished with prison.
Yeah, you wait until you've been burgled a few times. The only way you're going to stop a career burglar is to deprive him of the physical freedom to break into other people's homes. Fuck that dumb pigshit about only violent crimes deserving a custodial sentence, just because you feel sorry for habitual crims who make other people's lives a misery. We're the ones you should be feeling sorry for.

To all the people who say they see no reason why they should feel guilt over a past during which they weren't even alive, over things that other, long-dead people once did... Can I just ask: Do you ever feel pride in a history that you took no part in, or for achievements that weren't your own? If so, why the difference?

What I'm trying to get at here is that when it comes to your country's past, you've gotta take the rough with the smooth. You can't cherry-pick your country's positive achievements and say, "Yeah, we did that! That was us, the USA!", but skip the bloodstained pages of its history and say, "Nothing to do with me, that was other people long before I was born."

I'm not insisting you should feel guilt; but just let's have a bit of consistency, people.

There's a difference between guilt and shame. Guilt rests upon the knowledge that you were personally culpable for something. Shame rests upon the knowledge that other people did terrible things in your name and let the team down.

Yeah, real liberals are against the concepts of jail, handcuffs, trials, and laws.

Real liberals think you catch someone and immediately, wag your finger at them, and pat them on the back. If you can't do that, then you have to forget it because time-delayed justice is cruel.
Genuine liberals care a good deal about justice. For genuine liberals, injustice is about innocent people being wrongly accused and punished, or the guilty going unpunished for reasons such as their position or their connections.

But fake liberals, on the other hand, who troll topics like this one because they reckon it'll be full of low-hanging fruit (having assumed in the predictably pigshit-ignorant, lazy way of trolls that only a liberal would still support the prosecution of ex-SS members) -- they like to turn this idea upside down and back to front. For them, injustice becomes all about the guilty being punished ... if they're former Nazis. And then they'll affect outraged, liberal horror about this because they'll think that somehow, it trips up the "real libs" and tricks them into exposing some kind of double standard.

they are signatories to the geneva convention, it makes sense they wouldn't risk getting caught violating it by putting chemicals on an unproven delivery platform.
Imperial Japan restraining itself from violating the international laws and customs of war is hard enough to believe (their track record from 1937 hardly shows the Japanese acting as if they were afraid of legal consequences), but it makes little sense that they're quite happy to discard such restraint if the balloon bombs actually reach their targets.
