I think it's reasonable to believe something much greater than us exists.

I don't think it has anything to do with our preconceived notion of a 'god'.
I think we've got about as much hope of understanding it as goldfish have of understanding the nature and complexity of the human world just beyond the glass walls of their tank. They're vaguely aware there's something that sprinkles food on the surface of the water every morning ... and that's about it. That's all they'll ever know.

We're still clinging to Bronze Age superstitions in an attempt to grasp a tiny part of the universe, anthropomorphizing phenomena that we have no hope of comprehending. Imagining a bearded man in the sky who controls everything is a massive simplifier.

Why do idiots like TC pretend it's such a big deal?

This is what bothers me the most, I think -- the self-appointed "heroes" who think by acting in other's interests they have a right to tell everyone else what to do.

If you are so worried about "spreading the virus to vulnerable people" then quarantine yourself. But stop expecting everyone else to conform to your morals -- which are much more self-serving than you think.
If you live in a country governed by the rule of law, you already live in a country where people are expected to conform to "someone else's morals".

What bothers me the most, I think, are the amoral sociopaths who say they're actually more "disturbed" by those who want to see the lives of vulnerable people protected than they are by those who don't give a shit about whether or not they kill vulnerable people through their indifference, laziness and selfishness.

We disagree on the magnitude of it, and on whether our reaction as a society has indeed been proportional to that magnitude (relative to our reaction as a society to other things with much larger magnitude, such as the normal amount of deaths in any year).
Where we disagree is that in my country, the minor inconvenience of having to wear a mask in a crowded public place is too high a price to pay compared to the strain thrown on our health system by the knock-on effects of repeated waves of Covid-related demand.

And eight months is way too soon to pretend certainty about the longer-term trends. Re-post this topic this time next year, and we'll see.

The # of cases has increased 5 fold, and nothing happened. In fact, the rate of death has gone down. (5x increase in cases, but 3x increase in deaths).
In England, the number of patients waiting a year or more for treatment was 81 times higher in July this year than in July 2019. The proportion of cancer patients receiving their first treatment within two months dropped to one-third of the previous year's figure, while 4.4 million fewer potentially life-saving scans were carried out between April and September. You would need to be an ignorant, uncaring, shortsighted moron to pretend that Covid has, or will have, no impact on non-coronavirus illnesses and deaths.

Ignore the fatality rate for a moment. Let's assume that with hospital care, your chances of recovery are good. So what's the hospitalization rate for adults who are infected? Because even if you don't actually die, a constant upward spiral in hospital admissions is going to have the system creaking and groaning and splitting at the seams. Staff will become infected and not be able to work, operations and tests will be cancelled or postponed, beds will run short. Coronavirus is a danger not only to people who catch coronavirus.

But hey, who cares about that, because people have always been ill, right?

I wonder if having everything digital and pretty minimal would cause less memories to be remembered.
This is a bit of a tangent, but... Since the last decade, people have been documenting their lives more fully than ever before. It's now possible to have a day-by-day, and almost even hour-by-hour record of your life since birth.

In previous generations, memories were bound up in family snapshot albums in which you might find a photo of yourself taken maybe once every couple of years. My late parents took very few photos, and they ones they did take I treasure because they're rare glimpses into my childhood, like an isolated scene frozen in a flash of lightning. Now, there are kids growing up who'll probably have a complete record of their everyday life. I envy them for that.

It's more to do with laziness and an infantile, stubborn refusal to make even the smallest modifications to everyday behaviour under unusual circumstances than it is to do with politics. Imagine if there was a town called "Basic Town of Dakota" located in South Dakota, but people just called it "Dakota" for short. That's confusing as heck!
An analogy that I feel would work somewhat better if there was actually another country on the continent with "America" in its official name.

I suppose you could argue that "the European Union" is a bit of a cheek, seeing as it comprises only 27 out of Europe's 44 countries...
