This election may be the end of my relationship.

Not because I voted for Biden. That was accepted.

But because every last day since my fiancee says a new conspiracy theory of how Biden has cheated and Trump will win in court. Then I say you know that has been debunked already right? And she freaks the fuck out. Lol. Every single last day. Jesus.

I'm torn between limiting myself to sympathy and being blunt, and at the end of the day, I guess I'm kind of a dick.

Corrik, when people tell you "character counts", this is the kind of thing they're talking about. From what you say, Trump's constant, baseless conspiracy theory hype is now driving a wedge between you and your significant other. I do hope you are able to work through this; I don't want bonds between my fellow Americans and their loved ones to be rent asunder because of politics. It shouldn't be happening. But, as long as we Americans keep giving Trump and people like him - people that are glad to drive us apart if it garners them support - as long as we keep giving them our ears, our dollars, and our votes, it will keep happening. It won't always be you that it happens to; it might not always be happening to people you know. But when politicians foster division to build a power base, people end up divided.

but to go a step further, in battle, if you lower someone's brave below 10, they literally become a chicken. The funny thing is, this is probably a cosmetic thing to show how cowardly they've become, but its weird thinking about that when theres actual spells that turn people into frogs around as well.

You get the same damage bonus when attacking Chickens that you get when attacking Frogs, so I would argue that it is an actual transformation.

Mediators can decrease Brave by 20 (-5 permanent), Oracles by 30 (-7 permanent), and Beowulf by 50 (-12 permanent). Random enemies are generated with 46-74 Brave, so Beowulf can insta-Chicken a decent fraction of enemies, while Mediators and Oracles always need multiple actions.

Pretty sure there's a decent range of Br/Fa values in between "units start whining" and "units leave the party" but I prefer to stay out of the whining range entirely.

I think you pieced this together at some point, but FF12 is set in the distant past of FFT, when moogles and airships and suchlike were still around, and a fair ways to the east as well if I recall correctly.

Dancer is parallel to Bard. Bard requires a male unit with lv4 in Mediator and Summoner, Dancer requires a female unit with lv4 in Geomancer and Lancer.

In the Old English story of Beowulf, he has a sidekick named Wiglaf. FFT Beowulf uses a Chapter 1 Wiegraf sprite base. I don't think his name has more meaning than that.

Maybe if I used her she would have lines against her father.

Yeah, in the Murond Holy Place fight. I think the PSP remake also has a scene where she speaks to Kletian (the Shrine Knight wizard you don't really notice in Murond Holy Place and steamroll in Murond Death City.)

Apparently in the JP version the High Priest was "Marriage Funeral". "Marge" is probably an improvement.

I think it's generally agreed that lategame FFT plot should have spent more time on politics and less time on demons.

Thanks a lot to everyone who helped me with advice for this, and if there's sidequests I missed I still have a save on the world map so feel free to let me know now and I'll get to them tomorrow!

People have already mentioned the Deep Dungeon; I wouldn't bother trying to clear it without a FAQ, but if you want more FFT content, it's there. Also, if you fielded Cloud, you may have noticed that he can't do anything with his skillset - you need to equip him with a particular item in order to make it work. His unit quote in the formation menu gives a hint. Of course, even when you get Limit up and running, he's pretty far behind on levels. Cloud does get to equip the female-only ribbons in his base class, though, which I can only take assume is a reference to FF7's Wall Market sequence.

Go ahead and give Bard and its parallel Dancer a try, too. I'm not saying they're gonna outpace endgame setups, but they are unique gimmicks.

Trump wins if it is 269-269. It goes to house of reps, but by individual states in the house of reps.

Yes, it is weird.

And the Senate would pick the Vice President. Not relevant in this case, as I can't imagine a Republican Senate picking Harris over Pence to serve as Trump's VP - but, if the Senate were controlled by Democrats, they could do exactly that.

Elmdor's Blade Grasp is technically distinct from evasion, and it can block several attacks that normally ignore evasion, such as Jump and regular gun attacks. It's ridiculously good. If you've tried out Archer's Arrow Guard, that's a Blade Grasp clone that works against bows/crossbows only. Which does mean that you can Arrow Guard a Jump, as long as the Jumper has a bow or crossbow equipped, and yes that actually happened to me once. Glorious.

Meliadoul's skillset is useless against monsters in the base game, sadly (I believe the PSP remake buffs her to deal increased damage to them, instead.) She can equip spears and crossbows in her base job, but for obvious reasons, doing that stops her from using sword skills. If I recall correctly, Orlandu can equip both katanas and ninja swords in his base job, but runs into the same issue; no (Knight) Sword, no sword skills.

I leave it here today, hopefully I'll finally get some sidequest progression done next time.

The next stop to advance the Goland rumor is Lesalia Imperial Capital.

I don't suppose you stole Balk's gun? It's not a unique item, but they are hard to come by.

Sidebar, I've unlocked the Calculator class! Multiple people have mentioned this being a great class, so I try it on a random battle and... oh god it's so slow. It's so slow and you can barely move and how does the Math skill even work, it's not really explained.

You know the classic Final Fantasy Blue Magic, Level 5 Death? Math Skill is inspired by that. In FFT, if you want Level 5 Death, you combine Level and 5 from Math Skill with Death from Black Magic.

Onto the next battle (I choose South if that changes anything)

North wall is a different generic battle but it's still generic.

We then get a weird gimmick battle with two water levers. Honestly I don't see how this is much different than a 'kill all enemies' map, as unless I did it the hard way you have to wait for the two knights' bodies to disappear before progressing anyway.

That's pretty routine. It is possible to provoke the Knights into moving (by inflicting Confuse, for example) but it's easier to kill them and wait.

I believe that in order to advance the Goug sidequest you'll have to check for unique rumors in Goland Coal City.

Is Dancer like in FE where it gives you multiple turns? Cos that is something I would be very interested in!

No, FFT Dancers specialize in debuffing all enemies. Bards can do something akin to what you're thinking of, but honestly, the best fit for a FE Dancer is a Time Mage with the Quick spell (if it resolves successfully, the target's CT gauge fills and it gets the next turn.)

I kept Abandon on my Ninja so he can hopefully evade more, and gave him Attack Up from the Oracle so he can do massive damage now

Attack Up is Geomancer; Oracle gets you Defense Up.

Cut to the roof, where Barinten is arguing with Rafa (Why did Vormav leave him alive?).

If I recall correctly, once negotiations break down, Barinten calls the guards and books it for the door. I suppose that got him enough of a head start.

Jump is an attack with a charge time, like spells, but since it's a command rather than a menu, you aren't able to see when it will resolve until you've locked in the Jump. It is most reliable when you are targeting enemies with low CT, because that means there will be more time before their next turn.

I'd recommend you go ahead and switch your jobs. (Make sure you can access the equipment first, though; not much point in making someone an Archer until you can buy a bow for them.)

See, one of FFT's quirks is that, when any of your units gain JP in battle, your other deployed characters also gain a bit of JP for the same job. Units will even receive this "spillover JP" for jobs they can't yet access! So if you keep a single Squire around - doesn't even have to be the same unit all the time - all your other characters will gradually build up Squire JP to spend on Squire abilities. And in the meantime, you can be experimenting with jobs that are significantly more interesting than Squire.

He may be able to do it federally, but its not a blanket pardon of any crimes he has ever or may ever commit

With regard to state crimes, it doesn't really matter what a hypothetical President Biden and his Department of Justice think, does it?

Edit: And with regard to pardons for offenses that have not yet been charged or committed, I think that's the kind of issue which a 6-3 conservative court headed by Roberts will have a powerful desire to avoid reaching a conclusion on.

I believe his argument is that prosecuting Trump would open up a can of worms, so we shouldn't do it. I agree with the first point and disagree with the second but I don't think the idea is incoherent.

Currently my best bet is that Trump, at some point in the middle of refusing to admit defeat, will declare that he is pardoning himself of any crimes he may or may not ever be accused of committing. Can he do that? Dunno, but it's hardly the first issue he's had his lawyers stall indefinitely.

Apparently a federal judge is taking the stance that, since Trump has announced over Twitter that he has authorized declassification of all Russia investigation related material, the Mueller report and suchlike should be promptly released to the public, unredacted. In response, non-Trump spokespersons for the Trump administration are arguing that things the President says don't necessarily represent the intentions of the President.

To be clear, layers of separation between "Trump tweets everything that comes into his head" and "actual policy decisions are made" seem highly desirable. Indeed, I seem to recall a time when the President declared via Twitter that transgendered persons were unwelcome in the military, and Matthis refused to treat those tweets alone as official presidential directives, which I think was the right thing to do. This is still another darkly amusing reminder of how unqualified Trump is for the position the Electoral College chose him for. Would be funnier if I wasn't part of the public he's supposed to be serving, of course.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/supreme-court-restores-witness-signature-002731363.html

"The Supreme Court weighed in again Monday night on procedures for conducting mail-in voting this fall, reinstating South Carolina's requirement that absentee ballots include witness signatures.

The state's Republican election officials and legislature had asked the high court to intervene after two lower courts ruled that the requirement was a risky imposition during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response, the high court temporarily reinstated the witness signature rule while the case progresses in court but said any ballots received in the next two days without the signature must be counted. Conservative Associate Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch said they would not have added that concession."

So if you sent out your ballot under the rules that stood at the time, and then a court decision changing those rules came in afterward, three out of five conservatives on the Supreme Court are OK with nullifying your vote.

It seems kind of weird that, potentially, the bulk of their sentences may come not from conspiring to intimidate potential voters, but from utilizing computers in the process. I guess that's where your defense attorney pleads for leniency.

If this were a federal crime, they could also have their defense attorney repeatedly update the President on the status of the case, which definitely certainly positively isn't an indication that there could potentially be some pressure from the highest levels on the "Justice Department". I wonder if there's a way Barr could declare that this is a federal crime so that he can decide there's not enough evidence to prosecute?

Even if it was true (which it wasn't) why does it matter? Running the country is not actually a one person job, when you elect a president you get a whole administration with them. You're not just electing George W Bush, you're also electing Dick Cheny and Karl Rove too. Presumably whoever is whispering in the earpiece would be an important decision maker in the administration, and if the candidate thinks this decision maker has better answers, then those are probably the answers that will get implemented, so...I want to hear what the person in the earpiece has to say.

I want to hear it too, but from their own lips, not from a nominee that they're using as a photogenic figurehead. If Mysterious Voice will be actually be running things, then Mysterious Voice ought to be the one running for office.

The concept of a debate where the candidates bring prospective Cabinet members and can delegate questions to them sounds fine, though.

(Sonja seems weirdly not super useful in Fog of War maps, replacing her with the +2 vision perk seems to do just as good a job).

Sonja's bizarre AWDS quirk is that all of her enemies are at a permanent penalty of -1 terrain star. (For example, cities normally give 3 stars which is base ~30% damage reduction, but if you have Sonja active then cities only give your enemies 2 stars.) To be clear, that penalty doesn't just apply to units currently in combat with Sonja, but rather to all units not allied with (or belonging to) Sonja. Find space for her as an active CO and she'll passively debuff the entire enemy army.

I'm not saying she's good but that's her AW:DS gimmick.

You also can't see the HP of units controlled by an enemy Sonja (that was her original gimmick) but the AI has never cared.

Been working my way through the Gilgamosh Pit, and today I had some struggles with FFXIII. Now, after the first attempt, I should have replaced my subpar Vanille with an off-realm healer, but I kept retrying with a full realm team instead, and eventually squeaked out a clear. (Incidentally, I ended up bringing good old Saint Cross for Lightning's Holy AASB; when you're at low chain and struggling with Savage Mode, a 1.7x multiplier is quite helpful.)

Then the Luck of the Realms gave me her lightning AASB1 to couple with it. Guess I could have saved myself a lot of frustration if I'd put this fight off for a couple hours!

Incidentally, is anyone else annoyed that Greg's Kotetsu (hit Slot 3 for 95% cHP and Paralyze) becomes lethal damage at Savage Level 3? I'm believe going to default to holding my second 6*/Historia in reserve for Greg's "below 50%, max out Savage Level" trick from now on.

I don't think there's any prohibition on the same person being both President and Vice President at the same time.

As I understand it, if the President and VP are from the same state, then electors from that state are unable to vote for the ticket. If Trump is still considered a resident of NY, no big deal, 'cause it's unlikely to be the tipping point. But if Trump has formally become Florida Man, then he would be ineligible to receive Florida's electoral votes. So, while not illegal, it would be unwise. Not like that'd stop him, of course.

I didn't see it as any sort of "chessmaster" behaviour on his part, he was just being sensible and watching out for an important underling.

Being ready to teleport in and save a key minion at the drop of a hat isn't chessmaster-type?

So in three out of four routes the final boss is either his enemy, or a superweapon who is also at best his enemy-in-waiting?

On CF, by killing a powerful enemy of Thales who he would prefer to eliminate through his minions, you are carrying out his plan. On SS, you're killing his enemy again, driven mad by (among other things) injury from his weapons. On AM, you're killing his superweapon, who in this route never turns against him and his.

I mean, you're the one who thinks he's a cunning genius, not me, so my answer here is easy: he's arrogant. He wasn't prepared for the surprise attack on other routes either, and no, "nuke my own base after I've been fatally wounded" is not an impressive backup plan.

Thing is, on other routes, we may reasonably assume that Thales isn't prepared to nuke the Alliance, etc, because he doesn't consider them to be a threat and (with Rhea victorious and Edelgard slain) is going back into hiding. But on CF, it's a safe bet that Thales is prepared to drop some nukes on the Empire; he was quick to employ one against Arianrhod the last time Edelgard stepped out of line, and implied that he'd lay waste to the Empire if it happened again. ...And yet, he doesn't, and we are not told why.

In fact as far as I'm concerned the less the game deals with the Objectively Evil Molemen, the better

While I can certainly agree that Thales is Objectively Evil rather than a nuanced and complex character, the fact remains that Edelgard has decided that cooperating with Team Objectively Evil is an acceptable method of achieving her goals, which she justifies by resolving to deal with them later, once she rules the continent. So it is important that CF show that Edelgard is both willing and able to do that; that her reign will not be marred by countless Remire-style calamities, where Edelgard offers naught but assurances that she would have done something if she knew in time, which she didn't, but it's already done and she's not going to cut ties with useful allies just because they massacred a bunch of innocent people.

I do not believe that CF does an adequate job of demonstrating that Edelgard is ready to usurp control of that relationship. Apparently you disagree. *shrug*

Can you cite evidence for this? I just went back and looked at her boss conversations with them and the worst I saw is that she doesn't want them to become the next rulers of Fodlan.

On CF, you're not able to bring Edelgard or Hubert to the Leonie/Lindhart paralogue (in which you spar with a non-hostile dragon, and leave him alive). However, Lindhardt decides to leave them out of things on the grounds that it involves a saint, not that it involves a dragon; I don't think even Lindhart has yet connected those dots. So I do not believe that anti-Nabatean is the correct read.

Thales's introduction is literally "you have divine time-travel powers, but this man still outplayed you." Yes, I am inclined to respect that.

No, he is not the final boss. (The Evil Wizard archetype generally isn't.) If you ally with him, you never actually fight him, and the final boss is his most powerful enemy. If you don't ally with him, the final boss is either his superweapon, his other superweapon, or his most powerful enemy again.

The issue with nuking the winner of the Rhea/Edelgard fight is this: Rhea might be the winner. I mean, you're complaining about him "tipping his hand", it seems like dumping a volley of nukes on someone who can survive a volley of nukes is strictly a desperation move. So on routes where Rhea wins, Thales goes back into hiding. Then you catch him by surprise. He still has nukes ready to go, but Rhea saves your party. Thwarted!

On CF, Thales' plan to manipulate someone into killing Rhea for him succeeds. Agreed that it would have been wise for him to nuke Edelgard immediately afterward; apparently he still saw some use for her. Now, Thales did threaten to devastate the Empire if she crossed him again, so presumably Edelgard stays in line until she's ready to launch her own attack on Shambhala. And I'm sure that Hubert having located his HQ remains an unpleasant surprise to Thales. But even if he's not prepared for specifically a surprise attack on Shambhala, we can be confident that Thales is prepared for Edelgard to move against him, because she already tried it once and he was ready then, too. And yet, apparently, he isn't ready now. Why not? Why doesn't he devastate the Empire? Or if, perhaps, he decided instead to throw all his nukes at Edelgard and her attack force, then how does she survive without a dragon on her side?

Evidently, the writers did not consider answering those questions to be an important part of Edelgard's story. The game tells us that Edelgard plans to betray Thales, that Thales is prepared for Edelgard's betrayal, and also, in the epilogue, that she did it anyway and it worked. Seemingly the only in-game justification provided is "We're smart, and they don't realize how smart we are." Okay, Hubert, I might be more willing to accept that if the one time you tried to pull one over on the Slithers in-game didn't result in them demonstrating that you were behaving within expected parameters.

Footnote: I believe FE5 is the only Fire Emblem where the token evil wizard is also the final boss. They usually play the "have a dragon, lol" card.

I definitely don't think Thales is much of a chessmaster; in fact, to me he comes across as an arrogant buffoon.

When Jeralt is killed, Byleth uses divine time travel powers to save him and Thales (who cannot time travel) thwarts this. At the end of White Clouds, Thales is ready and able to remove Byleth from the field, even though Byleth has already broken out of magical imprisonment. I don't think it's fair to say that he makes no response to Edelgard announcing she plots to kill him, either, because when she actually takes a step in that direction (at Arianhod) he promptly drops a nuke on her new fortress in order to remind her who wears the pants in their relationship.

Speaking of which: SS and VW explain how the slitherers are defeated, I see little reason to believe similar events would not play out on CF.

On SS and VW, Thales nukes his own position, and your party survives because Rhea can tank nukes. On CF, the party would need another way.

Edelgard's goals aren't necessarily evil, but her methods certainly are. I think the best argument to be made for her is that her path, however ruthless, led to the most thorough eradication of the Slithers; however, personally I feel that "let's ally with and empower the cabal of evil wizards, then eventually stab them in the back, which we will achieve even though their leader is a skilled chessmaster who is not only smart enough to distrust us but who also has contingency plans in place to dispose of us when we stop being an asset" is a bad plan. Now, according to the CF epilogue, it works, somehow, off-camera. Still can't respect it.
