Yeah, the wording of this is insanely vague, to the point of giving carte blanche to any Rambo wannabes to open fire on a peaceful protest as a preemptive measure. Defending property against an actual attack is fair game, but letting people shoot "suspected looters/rioters" or anyone engaging in "criminal mischief that disrupts a business" is just asking for that to be abused.

On one hand, I feel really bad for the grunts Trump has put on the front lines to staff that ridiculous farce of a hotline, given that I'm guessing most of them aren't even getting paid to deal with all of that harassment and abuse (or if they are, it's minimum wage and their last three cheques bounced). On the other hand, they were clueless/desperate enough to sign up for Trump's campaign, so I guess they kinda have it coming and could really quit any time.

You've got Disney+, don't you? You can check any of them out to see. Off the top of my head, I can think of Atlantis 2, Cinderella 2, and Tarzan & Jane (did become a TV series), plus a whole bunch of different holiday specials that follow a similar structure. Basically, they're "feature-length films" consisting of half-hour stories (basically TV episodes) played in sequence to make up a full hour and a half. There's sometimes an overarching plot linking them together, but generally it's just the bare minimum needed to have the series of episodes make sense. It's not a matter of having a single storyline told over three "acts."

I dont know

I think that we are being really stand offish towards China in some ways that dont really benefit us, but at the same time were looking the other way about some messed up shit that theyre doing

Pretty much this. Trump's approach of putting tariffs on a random assortment of goods was so directionless that it really didn't send a clear message about how China had to shape up to get on better terms with the US. There needs to be a focus on labour conditions and environmental impact (two of the major ways China cuts corners to be attractive to companies looking to outsource manufacturing) in any tariffs or sanctions that are levied, directly targeting the problems (such tariffs can also be made more general to prevent companies from simply moving their manufacturing to a less regulated country and repeating the whole process again) while not hurting companies that want to engage China for other advantages (such as the fact that their sheer population size makes it easier to find specialists to employ, for tasks that require a very specialized workforce).

Getting American boots on the ground to survey their various alleged (most likely true) human rights abuses is also in order. The UN's on the fence about such measures, but the US taking some initiative would really help spur that along and lay the groundwork for international pressure on China to get is act together.

This is not the sort of topic that somebody who believed there was no chance of the election flipping in Trump's favour would make. Ergo, you must believe that some states have a non-zero chance of flipping.

I'm not asking for you to identify states that are extremely likely/guaranteed to flip. Just the ones that you believe have a possibility of doing so and your reasons for believing that. The position was never "that isn't weird." The position was "there are plenty of reasonable explanations for it, so stop acting like it's proof that these election results aren't legitimate." Weird stuff like that happens all the time during elections. It's only making news this time because the election is being conducted under a microscope and Trump is so desperate to find ways to discredit the result that he'll latch on to any oddity he can find and call it fraudulent. Investigations are ongoing, so if you want to allege wrongdoing, wait for actual evidence to surface instead of jumping to conclusions from easily-explained oddities.

For whatever reason, biking is generally okay, probably because I tend to alternate between bursts of pushing really hard and coasting for a while. adjl
11/10/20 5:32:43 PM

If Covid hadn't happened or Trump had done a better job of managing it, I'm pretty much 100% certain he would have won. He's generated a ton of ill will with his mismanagement of the situation, and as much as he's got supporters that have kept humping his leg the whole time, that failure cost him a lot of his more lukewarm voting base. It also meant that his opponents were even more motivated to get him out of office, resulting in an aggressive push to get people voting that resulted in the largest voter turnout in the country's history (at least in terms of raw numbers), and it's unlikely that push would have happened (or been nearly as successful in swaying apathetic people and fence-sitters) if not for Covid.

MartianManchild posted...
Absolutely. Biden only won because of the mail in ballots. A good chunk of those mail in voters wouldnt have gone out to the polls like usual and Trump would have won handily. Basically it would have been what it was looking like late Tuesday night of the election with him ahead in most swing states.

Eh, I don't think that's quite accurate. There's generally a Democrat bias in mail-in and other advance votes, but the main reason it's been so pronounced this time is because of the clear left/right split in willingness to follow Covid safety protocols. Take Covid away, and a sizable chunk of those voters would just go to the polls normally. It's even more pronounced because Trump spent the last several months trying to convince the country that mail-in votes were going to be made illegal and telling his supporters not to use them, and again, that wouldn't have happened except in opposition to the push for expanding mail-in voting as a Covid precaution.

That's compounded by working from home, so I don't even have a regular commute to whip me into shape. It's hard to find the motivation to go out for a quick ride just for the sake of rebuilding my stamina, particularly where going anywhere interesting is pushing my current capabilities.

I don't think it's really the party itself that does the damage. Just parents who have one I feel are more likely to aggressively gender their children. Which doesn't just hurt trans and non-binary kids.

Pretty much. I actually heard about one couple who threw a second gender reveal party to help their teenage kid come out as non-binary, saying something along the lines of "we got it wrong the first time so let's try again." Conceptually, a gender reveal party is no different from telling your friends "it's a boy!", which most people do quite harmlessly. Committing to that to enough of an extent to have a party, though, does suggest that they value that gendering more than somebody who just tells people whenever it comes up in conversation.

Basically, as long as the people throwing it maintain an open mind and don't blow anything up, the party itself doesn't cause any harm. It's just often correlated with more close-minded attitudes and/or explosions.

Console exclusives in general have kind of died. Outside of first-/second-party titles, you only really see high-profile exclusives if the platform holder has funded the game's production (see: Bloodborne, Bayonetta 2) or paid for an exclusivity deal (which is becoming less popular as people catch on to how anti-consumer that is). There's just so much extra money to be made by releasing on more platforms, with relatively little work involved (compared to the game's whole development process).

What baffles me is that - to some extent or another - we're all gamers here. We've all played RPG's where 40% resistance to anything is a big enough deal to be worth seeking out. My idea was more along the lines of using full-on gene editing to permanently incorporate the viral proteins into the patient's genome, which would definitely be longer-lived (and effectively create an autoimmune disorder, which probably wouldn't be good). I don't actually know that an mRNA approach would create a longer-lasting response, though I can understand that they'd go with RNA over proteins to expedite the research (having to successfully create and clone a bacterial vector to express the mRNA after isolating it would take time, and isolating the protein directly from intact viruses leaves the risk of incorporating extra, virulent proteins).

A while back, I was talking to somebody (I think it was Whiskey) about hypothetical ways that a vaccine could produce longer-lasting immunity than natural exposure (this was in the context of people only getting ~3 months of immunity out of being infected), and one of the ideas that I tossed out without knowing whether or not it was possible was using genetic engineering to cause the body to produce viral proteins and trigger a pseudo-atuoimmune response and develop immunity that way. Good to know my semi-educated spitballing of ideas wasn't actually that far off the mark.

To be clear, I think anyone trying to ascribe meaning to stock market behavior and current events is basically trying to read tea leaves

Eh, you can usually make some reasonable inferences retrospectively. Just not in the present.

Which states do you believe have a non-zero chance of flipping in Trump's favour if they do a recount/by the time they finish counting ballots, and why?

Not THAT surprised, but it's still a rather baffling amount of desperation.

Has OhhJa really gotten so desperate as to stoop to "Trump didn't make this stupid-looking mistake, somebody in the administration that he hired did it on purpose to make him look bad!"?

My friend, Trump does not need help looking bad. There's no need for anyone to concoct any sort of plan beyond "let's give him back his twitter password" to achieve that, and there's no reason to presume that him looking bad is a result of some diabolical scheme. Especially not when he hasn't blamed anyone for it, because we all know Trump isn't exactly shy about pointing fingers when he doesn't want to admit to making a mistake.

I'm still in reality. Maybe you'd like to join me some time? The media calling the election is completely informal and the process doesn't end until all recounting and legal battles are done, or when one candidate permanently concedes (as opposed to a temporary concession we saw in 2000, where the decision was based on the media then the concession was retracted for a recount)

I believe there are a few Disgaea games on there (I know 5 is), which are both RPG's and strategy games. They're all relatively old, though, so you may have played them already (that, and Disgaea isn't everyone's cup of tea). Also, if you don't already have it on 3DS, I can't recommend Rune Factory 4 enough.

Paying off the mortgage? Isnt that low interest?

Pay the minimum and invest the rest.

That's generally going to be better for your bottom line, but there's something to be said for the quality of life improvement that comes from being debt-free, even if it ends up being financially suboptimal. One should do the math to see just how much potential income is being given up by paying off the mortgage (or other low-interest loans) quickly, since it will often be a pretty substantial difference, but sometimes, it can be worth it.

Ugh and so did my ex's test

It'd probably be a good idea to contact your local public health authority/testing centre/whatever your local protocol is to see what they recommend doing now. They may suggest going for a test, or they may suggest continuing to isolate while you watch for symptoms, in the interest of not going out unnecessarily. Either way, you're already isolating as best as you can, which is the right thing to do, so carry on with that. Odds are, you'll be fine even if you are infected, so try not to worry too much and just keep watching for symptoms.

Presidents don't get fired.

The organization that he's been working for has decided not to renew his contract, on account of his poor performance. It's technically closer to a layoff than to being fired, but there are definitely enough elements of "fired" in there that it's not inaccurate to say that.

And that's without considering that removing a president from office via impeachment can definitely be called "firing" them. That process hits every salient point in the term's definition.
