Dude, if my daughter is in a position where she needs a job or needs to make money, and her options are slaving away at as a dishwasher versus going on X site to sell nudes, where the latter is more profitable, less time consuming, less physically exhausting, all around less demanding, what am I supposed to do to not worry about her picking the latter option?

False equivalency. The options had existed but were never on the scale that it is now thanks to X site. Said site is exploding in popularity where people are using it for the electronic equivalent of prostitution. We even have a politician condoning this. If I raise a daughter, I want her to value herself, her own body to more than a $10 a month subscription and be willing to take on honest work, take risks, and be creative to get to where she wants to be. Not take the easy way out with the oldest profession in the world. Is this too much to ask for?

I busted my tail taking on odd jobs and missed opportunities and gained others because I wanted to hold myself to a standard. Thanks to this, I've gotten opportunities of a lifetime that I'll be sure that (in a universe where this happens) my great great great grandkids will know about. How would I instill these values in my daughter if society is blasting tunes that contradict my values?

"The crowd" also believed in Mt Gox. "The crowd" regularly falls for scams like bitconnect. Based on everything I've read on cryptocurrencies, I see no revolution. Heck, not even the underlying tech of blockchain has much practical use. What we're seeing is hyped up speculation. It doesn't matter what "the crowd" believes if the thing they believe in is fundamentally flawed or outright worthless.

The crowd that believed in Mt Gox also committed a cardinal sin in leaving their crypto on an exchange. "Not your keys, not your crypto". If someone has access to your private keys or seed phrase, consider your assets stolen. I have 10 link tokens on Coinbase. Coinbase can for whatever reason shutdown my account and lock my funds. Or they can go down and I lose access to my wallet on there. The whole purpose of crypto is to manage your own assets as though you are your own bank. Leaving your stuff on the exchange is akin to treating them as a bank. You're not supposed to do that. You're never supposed to do that. Bitconnect, I haven't looked too much into it, but I can tell you that at the height of Ethereum's moonshot, people were creating fake projects to get investments only to exitscam. This is an issue with accessibility being bare bottom where anyone can whip out a youtube video on how to create their own token on the Ethereum platform to sell as shares.

1337toothbrush posted...
If I have a company and I use different time tracking software then I'm at risk of becoming obsolete? Sounds silly to me. As I said before, the manual audit is intentional. Removing the manual audit is more "efficient" but that's like saying removing safety features is more efficient. In reality, companies that allow people to enter whatever they want on their timesheets and automatically pay out what is inputted without checking are more likely to die off.

It's not just the verification (which you don't have to omit when integrating blockchain tech), there's also the aspect of sharing wealth with the employees more easily. There are so many other use cases for smart contracts, you can take a gander here.

https://blog.chain.link/44-ways-to-enhance-your-smart-contract-with-chainlink/

And I was just speaking with a friend who is invested in this one project that revolves around Proof of Stake. You have a point about persons can act maliciously even though I guess the theory is that the more invested they are, the more they're motivated to see the success of the network. I do recognize the other issue where PoS makes the haves have more versus the have nots when Proof of Work is open to anyone.

1337toothbrush posted...
The smart contracts are defined by the immediate individual you do business with. Saying "the trust is in the system" is akin to saying you can sign regular contracts without reading them because you believe in the court system.

I suppose I should have said faith in the network, but you still have a point on both ways.

Fees are small in the crypto space right now because there are a lack of regulations. Take coinbase, for example, they tend to follow regulations more than other exchanges, but with that they charge higher fees. It's the same narrowmindedness as claim of Uber making taxis "more efficient". Sure, as new players they came in charging less money, but after they're established they greatly increased their prices. It's reinventing the wheel but with technology that makes little to no difference.

No no no no. The fees are insanely low due to the nature of the network. Someone sent several hundred million dollars worth of BTC for 5 buckaroos. Regulation is not going to alter the fees. They can't even regulate them to begin with. The most they can do is flag the crypto addresses that have suspicious transactions and demand exchanges blacklist those addresses. Coinbase can slap on higher fees, but that's coinbase. Me sending crypto to you is solely dependent on the network itself. This is something you want to experience yourself. You gotta try it.

Your loan example makes no sense. So in order to get a loan for $1000 (I assume this is in real money), you had to put up *more* than $1000 equivalent in cryptocurrency? What if you wanted to loan bitcoin, what do you put up then? A different cryptocurrency? Why not just exchange instead of taking out a loan? The purpose of a loan is leverage.

Yes. I wasn't going to exchange because I didn't want to give up my Link but I didn't want to wait on my paycheque to buy at low prices. When I took out the loan through Nuo Network (a lending platform on Ethereum), I put up $2000 worth of Link for $1000 of USDC, US dollar stable coin. If the price of Link drops too low, as in my collateral drops to the value of $1000, then I autoliquidate. I had over a month to pay back my loan (even had the option for 3 months!) which cost me about $15-$20 altogether. There was another time, when I first learned about taking loans out at a high margin so I didn't have to collateralize so heavily and I miscalculated my liquidation price. That week, Link tanked which had me on the verge of liquidation, so I ended up taking out another loan to pay off the first loan.

These are rudimentary experiences, but I can't replicate them in the regular banking space. The link I posted above talks more about the DeFi space more intricately. In terms of how my example would work in widespread adoption, I can see in the future, assuming all assets possible are digitized, people collateralizing their car deeds for loans though that does open up a can of worms of how to appraise cars and keep track of their value in real time.

So you're not reading the smart contracts yourself. You're placing blind faith in others. You can go ahead and do that, but I'd rather put my faith in institutions that can't just disappear overnight.

Believing in the wisdom of the crowd is a valid tool, especially when they're transparent in how they judging or coming to an opinion. And you can put your faith in institutions, or you can believe in a budding industry that will revolutionize the world and be apart of the revolution.

1337toothbrush posted...
Those things don't matter to companies. What exactly does a company lose by not adopting these things? There are commonly-used time tracking tools, it's not like smart contracts are universal. Also, on top of smart contracts you need to build the time tracking software that works with smart contracts. There is no universality there either. You assume it'll become universal because...? People use things if they provide something useful to them.

An Uber-like service with smart contracts sounds interesting, but the problem is a lack of customer support. What if something goes wrong? You record your bad review to the blockchain? Then what? There's no resolution.

They are at risk at becoming obsolete in the face of those that do adopt the technology to become more efficient, share the wealth with their employees more, be more accessible and ultimately become more profitable. The accessibility part I need to emphasize as that's a major factor in the reasons why no one gives a damn about gold in the face of the bitcoin. It's how the DeFi market is already eating to Wallstreet.

Regarding customer support, there's a lot of research right now going on in developing a reputation system. In the context of Chainlink, their goals of staking, where you hold your Link tokens up as collateral to give up as a penalty for poor reliability, is held up because they're trying to get this right. I couldn't say what other strategies people are looking into, especially when tying into behavior in the real world.

1337toothbrush posted...
The tricky part is crafting smart contracts in an infallible way AND having all parties understand the precise mechanisms. Thanks for taking the time for writing these explanations, but I'm just not seeing it. The ideal is a system that works when all parties don't trust each other, but this doesn't achieve that. At some level you have to put your trust in something, whether it's the author of the smart contract or within parts not necessarily covered within the smart contract (e.g. how does the employer know that the employee is correctly recording time?). Many of the things it does are things that are already possible or already being done without blockchain. There are already escrow services. For example, I needed to have money held in escrow when I was buying a house. The service didn't cost me anything. Blockchain wouldn't have benefited me there.

The trust is in the system, not an immediate individual you do business with. You gotta try this out for yourself. Seeing is believing. At least try sending money to a relative out of the country (the farthest distance from you possible) and then sending them bitcoin. I sent $500 into the Caribbean and paid $20 in fees and took a day to process. With crypto, that would have taken minutes and I would have paid cents. In the defi space, I went looking to take out a 3K loan at a local bank. I needed a valid form of ID, I needed pay stubs, I needed a letter stating I was working at the company I claimed to be working at. And it took a few weeks to process. With crypto, I got a grand out in 15 minutes of figuring out how the site works. And I could have taken out a larger sum. Granted, this required me to overcollateralize (put in collateral worth more than the loan) so I don't really know how this will work with widespread adoption. But it's insane how accessible these services are and it's only going to grow from here.

I recall the dude who played the leading hero of the Twilight series having to go to extremes to deter his swarming fans from getting close to him when the Twilight movie first came out. He eventually escaped to freedom and returned home, but he returned as a devout Christian to introduce the religion and instill the basic belief that every human being has value and should be entitled to fundamental human rights.

I bring this up to show that there are beliefs we have in modern day society that I feel are taken for granted.

Interesting. I got the answer by a different process that I think is more intuitive than what is shown at the link. Basically, I noticed that each column of a square has the same sum, so you're looking for the number to pair with 8 to add up to 11+12=23. Same principle, different way of spotting the pattern.

I got the answer by looking at the differences between opposite squares diagonally (6-4),(7-5),(9-7),etc, and looked to maintain that ratio for the last block.

Seems like a coincidence that it held up. I didn't think the riddle was clever though.

And I'd love to respond the "lol it's just a conspiracy" posts, but if I do, I'll get modded for trolling and I'll get suspended or go to purgatory for another week. I would like to keep my account. If you think I'm an idiot and don't want to see my thoughts, there's an ignore button right on my name. USE IT.

How come?

Because of the mountain of evidence for voter fraud and more importantly there are patents for the usage of blockchain technology to verify the authenticity of mailin ballots. I don't know if they'll be used this election but I'm tempted to gamble they will come into play this election cycle for the court case.

I've already said the problem isn't that b you need someone else at all, but rather the difficulty of completing the dex changes dramatically merely based on where you live on planet earth.
It has gotten much easier thanks to online. Even then, that's not something to hold a developer against as they're leveraging a specific functionality for their intended vision. That'd be like me complaining Splatoon isn't a good game because I don't have the internet stability to play it.

It artificially increases the difficulty of completing there pokedex. The game itself isn't hard but artificial difficulty isn't defined by how hard the game is by rather whether or not the difficulty has anything to do with the game. In this case the difficulty of completing the pokedex relies predominantly on your ability to find another player willing to make the trade.

Dude, the of the biggest drivers of the appeal of Pokemon is the social interaction between players to collaborate in order to fill up one's Dex. You being inhibited from completing the Dex on your own is in no way artificial difficulty.

Good. Police announced their presence, police get shot at by drug dealer, police return fire (as they should), drug dealers drug dealer girlfriend gets caught in cross fire.

They slammed on the door but didn't say who they were, at 2AM in the morning, which is why Walker shot as a reaction. In any case, Walker knows he screwed up. Taylor was the treasurer and accountant for her exboyfriend's drug dealing (which is what led the police to her door in the first place), Walker had to be aware of this, so he can be wary of a potential drug bust at her place.

Walker, a licensed gun owner who said he thought the officers were intruders, allegedly fired a shot that hit Mattingly in the leg.
Also, I thought it was a ricochet shot that from another police officer that hit his leg. Guess that's misinformation spread?
