I feel like we're arguing 2 different things. Science at its heart, yes it's an idea meritocracy. But to create an environment for an idea meritocracy to thrive, something we can do in our own lives and worlds, I'm talking about this.

I'm in a small group trying to startup a project on food security and if we get to the point where it can be a company, this is the environment I want.

We have an "idea meritocracy" already, it's called science.

And you don't do science by having a bunch of people from different backgrounds throw out wild speculation to see who can come up with the snappiest rhetorical argument.

This isn't about how we show which ideas are best, this is only about how the best ideas are communicated.

The labs I've worked in don't reflect that kind of work culture of idea meritocracy described in Principles, where even the head director would test his own ideas on a knucklehead like me. But yes, you can do science by having people with vastly different backgrounds interact with one another and share ideas on their projects. The psychologist who penned the "flow state", Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, talked about this in his book on Creativity, where he brought in top leaders of their fields, from both the arts and sciences for that experiment.

pinky0926 posted...
TBH no i don't think this would solve anything and really just ties into the problem that COVxy pointed out, i.e. it paints the issue as a 50/50 "who knows whats right?" kind of deal. Like how are these two people opposing experts at all?

The best way to test ideas is to open the floor up to as many people as possible with as diverse of backgrounds as possible to challenge said ideas, i.e. creating an idea meritocracy. Ray Dalio's Bridgewater Associates, one of the most successful hedgefunds in the world, operates this way as well as a number of startups adopting that culture. Heck, 4chan is basically the messageboard equivalent due to its anonymous nature forcing people to generate good and creative content or good ideas if they want attention.

The concern with the committee panel is that you're appealing to authority by trusting their judgements only because they're experts. It's a safe judgement to make but it can be taken advantage of and will be taken advantage of if there's an opportunity to make or lose money, as we've seen with how so many authoritative figures deliberately spreading misinformation on the coronavirus. For instance the CDC is only now acknowledging that the 6 foot social distance isn't enough. Or how a number of authoritative figures in the US government on both sides downplayed the effectiveness of masks and of Coronavirus back in February.

I'm sure no one would complain about a podcast of a top level oil corporation CEO talking about climate change with an climate scientist not on his payroll.

Sounds like she needs direction and guidance in her life. Ideal situation would be her boyfriend leading her and supporting her. She has little incentive to come to this realization on her own that she needs to build up a future for herself as she'll be able to snag another boyfriend after you, meaning there's one less incentive to improve oneself. And it doesn't sound like she has a female support group (could be friends, older female role models, etc) to learn from. People want what others in their circle have. If a dude in his circle sees everyone making money in stocks or something, he'll want to get in as well. If a girl sees every girl in her group honing a craft, she'll want to have her own craft as well.

I was somewhat in this position where I punked out of starting a relationship with this one girl and let her get taken by some other dude. Still bitter about it but it lit a bonfire of a motivation in me to go improve my life. You don't seem to have much time on your hands to really invest in this relationship, specifically in her. Unless you could make the commitment, you won't be satisfied.

Who's to say whose life is more precious, whose life is more deserving, whose life is more privileged, whose life is more valuable, whose life is more expendable? Particularly who decides the criteria by which these questions will be answered??

Human rights are universal. Life is a human right. Birth is part of life.

I agree that human rights are universal but I recognize there forces out there who would impose their own will and there will always be a struggle for power between different tribes.

https://wikileaks.org/clinton-emails/emailid/12659&nbsp
Here is an email of Hillary Clinton's that talks about the motivations behind Frances' (and subsequently the US') "liberation" of Libya. The reason why is that Libya intended to create a new currency that would have challenged France's financial influence in the French speaking countries and Ghaddafi had a grand vision of uniting Africa under this currency. Due to his own oil production, this would have been a competitor to the Petrodollar, the US dollar.

He had to go.

The reason why I say such heartless things is because I recognize that these types of decisions are made and influence our lives. In the above case, it's to protect the value of the US dollar, our country's sovereignty and influence on the world. If you think this is wrong, if you want to fight back against this and make a safer, fairer world for all, there is a way. It's through blockchain technology.

Pro life. It's human life from conception. I don't care at all about the "my body my rights" spiel.

That being said, one of the authors of Freakonomics, Steven Levitt, presented a breakthrough research paper in which they found a strong correlation between crime and abortion. The basic gist is that neglected and abused kids are more likely to fall into crime. Better access to abortion and other birth control options leads to a reduction of born kids raised in abusive homes which means less crime.

As a big believer in sacrifice the few (as long as it's not me) to save the many, if you can't take care of your kid for whatever reason, kill it. Abortion is legalized homicide so take one for the human race. This sounds morbid but people aren't equal in value. Women are the gatekeepers of humanity so they inherently are of higher worth than men. And boys need to be invested in so they can contribute and have a strong self worth (as the same with girls, of course). This is why it's imperative to have a community to help foster this growth so kids can reach that high level of value to better contribute back to society.

Some people like to tip, they like good service. I'm not saying it needs to be mandatory, but it shouldn't be a big deal like some companies make it out to be. If I am buying an expensive heavy bbq and 3 people help me put it in my vehicle, then I should be allowed to tip them 5 dollars each. Same with putting groceries in someones car. Shouldn't be a mandatory tip, or an expected tip, just not a shunned tip.

That's what Embrace means by the tipping culture needing to die. You guys are on the same page. No one should feel entitled to a tip as it defeats the original intention of tipping.

thats what his own attorney is saying happened at least, and thats whats shown in the clips the attorney included. If something happened between the trash can fire and the parking lot, its probably not favorable to Rittenhouse, otherwise the attorney would have included it.

I'm looking at 3:10 and they going over Rosenbaum apparently going off to start more fires and it cuts to a clip of Rittenhouse running with an extinguisher. It's not on camera showing Rittenhouse spraying off something on fire and I say presumably because I'm iffy if it's just Rosenbaum setting fires, could be another accomplice of his. But the effect is the same I guess, of a number trying to set more trash cans on fire.

I wonder how the story would play out if they got away with blowing up the gas station.

I didn't hear of where Rittenhouse got his gun from so this topic was enlightening. Before the video, I've been wondering what they could pin the kid on since he showed massive restraint in his gunfire and the videos make it pretty clear that he wasn't an aggressor. The only thing they could get him down on was if they could prove he provoked the first victim into an altercation. The video sheds light on how the "altercation" started. The victim had an argument with a dude dressed a lot like Rittenhouse, and probably mistook Rittenhouse for him when he was trying to blow up a gas station, to which Rittenhouse intervened with a Fire extinguisher.

I'm in slight shock that these rioters tried to blow up a gas station. My god, these people are out of control.

Somehow, I came across a leaked police report.

https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/read/63943132/breonna-taylor-summary-redacted1

From what I'm reading (which I'm halfway through), Breonna's car was implicated in an unresolved homicide case back in 2016. The victim was an associate of her baby daddy and boyfriend at the time. Fast forward to 2020, the detectives have been investigating her now ex-boyfriend for narcotics trafficking and received search warrants to do a bust on multiple houses in connection to him. They received a bank statement of the ex-boyfriend's from Chase and it connected him to Breonna's house. The detectives and the SWAT team did a simultaneous bust on multiple locations. At Breonna's house, she was with her new boyfriend when they starting slamming on the door. They didn't announce who they were, and barged in. Her boyfriend shot at them and this was the shootout that ended in the tragedy as Breonna was standing in the hallway at the time.

What was the story that was circulating and what can they get the police on? I haven't paid attention to the story till now. But the police report is super interesting and this could easily be adopted into a movie.

Some say they decided to transition after realising they were same-sex attracted, and that transitioning was partly driven by homophobia, either in society or in their families.

Most people probably arent aware I certainly wasnt, until I started researching this issue properly that ten years ago, the majority of people wanting to transition to the opposite sex were male. That ratio has now reversed. The UK has experienced a 4400% increase in girls being referred for transitioning treatment. Autistic girls are hugely overrepresented in their numbers.

The current explosion of trans activism is urging a removal of almost all the robust systems through which candidates for sex reassignment were once required to pass. A man who intends to have no surgery and take no hormones may now secure himself a Gender Recognition Certificate and be a woman in the sight of the law. Many people arent aware of this.

@Cobalt_Wasps clownfish have the capability to switch sex. Taken from Wikipedia:

In a group of anemonefish, a strict dominance hierarchy exists. The largest and most aggressive female is found at the top. Only two anemonefish, a male and a female, in a group reproduce through external fertilization. Anemonefish are sequential hermaphrodites, meaning they develop into males first, and when they mature, they become females. If the female anemonefish is removed from the group, such as by death, one of the largest and most dominant males becomes a female. The remaining males move up a rank in the hierarchy.
Anemonefish lay eggs on any flat surface close to their host anemones. In the wild, anemonefish spawn around the time of the full moon. Depending on the species, they can lay hundreds or thousands of eggs. The male parent guards the eggs until they hatch about 610 days later, typically two hours after dusk.[

It would be nice if I had some feedback to see if we're on the same page. You do a class on this stuff. It's a lot of information to digest and I'm still learning and relearning as I type up these posts.

Alright, to recap, we've talked about:

1) The US dollar and its influence on the banking system
2) The bitcoin's banking system and it's influence on the banking system
3) some basics of the blockchain (by popular complaints)

And mind you, to learn blockchain technology, it's like math. To learn it properly you need to understand the problem and its significance before you learn the tool (math is taught tools/algorithms first, problems later, hence why everyone hates the subject). If I just give you information it'll go through one eye and out the other. Once you have the motivation and appreciation, the information will stick like glue and will be better digested.

Now, there's another breakthrough innovation made possible by blockchain technology, which will have a much larger impact on your own livelihood, smart contracts! Back in 2013, a 19 year old kid at the time, Vitalik Buterin, made the proposition: "We now have data on the blockchain, why don't we take it a step further and write programs on the blockchain?" So Fast forward to 2015 where a new blockchain was built up by the community specifically for the next paradigm of programming development; Ethereum!

So what makes smart contracts so special? Firstly they're applications that exist on the blockchain. Because of that they have some unique properties. Because they exist on the blockchain, they are immutable (can't be altered) once they're deployed thanks to the highly secure nature of blockchain technology. And more importantly, they can automatically execute based on events; "If X, then Y". In other words, automation.

Let's use a simple yet relatable example; If [Biden wins in November], then [I close my account]. If we were to do this, I can welch out of my obligation come November because there are no tools to keep me beholden to my promise. We could use an intermediary, SBAllen or perhaps another admin to close my account, but you'd have to trust that they go on their end of the deal. I could potentially strike a deal with them behind closed doors to get away with my account. If this site was integrated with blockchain tech, i.e. became a Web 3.0 application, we can use a smart contract and force me or other welchers to commit to their promise.

What this means is that you eliminate the need for trust.

There are also another couple components that are worth mentioning. In a blockchain network, all users have a universal bank account, i.e. their crypto wallet, and the property of which we now have digital assets. Think about how back in the day we used to copy/paste everyone's MP3 files onto our MP3 players. You can't do that in a blockchain environment. If I move an asset from one wallet to another, it's not longer in the previous wallet. These key components, the elimination of trust (the human component), universal bank accounts, and digital assets, combined with the blockchain for premiere blockchain development, Ethereum and an insanely passionate and excited community, a new world of opportunities will arrive.

So what you'll see in the future are people creating smartcontracts with brand new monetization schemes, and new digitization schemes. Simple example, take Uber. This exact concept can be recreated in smart contracts, but without the middleman company taking a cut. This decentralized version of Uber, dUber, will be more profitable because the wealth can be better distributed among those who contribute to the platform. dAirbnb, dEbay, all these are potential concepts will come into existence. And they will devour their original companies.

We're seeing this right now in the De-Fi, decentralized Finance world, where they're eating up the market share of regular financial world. We've taken 5% of their wealth. In just 5 years or so compared to a sector that has been stagnant for 30+ years, that's really damned good. And it's only accelerating. De-Fi can do everything the Financial world can do, but much easier and more convenient. You want a loan? When you go to a bank, you need an ID, proof of residency, proof of having a job and getting paid, and you need to be approved for the loan. De-Fi? This process can take days. You can overcollateralize and boom, get a loan within 10 minutes. You have your money in savings/checking account at the bank? The interest rate is going to be jack. In crypto? There are interest rates going up to 8% for some crypto. This is just the tip of the iceberg and it has gotten to the point where big banks like JP Morgan are jumping into crypto to even hold crypto as custody for customers and create other financial products revolving around the field. They recognize the threat of crypto. Adapt or die.

There are so many other applications from digitizing identity (you hear about people complaining of Bill Gates' vaccines IDing people? It'll use blockchain tech in some form so go get those vaccines and make me some money boi!) to creating new currencies to incentivize certain behaviors like a current project that uses satellite data to monitor growth of reforestation projects and pay those for upkeep of the project accordingly, to even using a digital identity to prevent fraudulent accounts like underage kids on Tinder. And videogames will be REBORN thanks to now having digital assets.

The sky's the limit for these applications. Basically all big name companies and websites are on the chopping block where they can evolve or go extinct with this technology. I implore you all to jump into this field and learn all you can. This is our internet revolution, this is our time, and the future has never looked brighter.

To get your bearings and what to learn and to learn the state of crypto world now, I implore you all to take a look at this video.

Yes, blockchain makes bitcoin possible, but bitcoin isn't what blockchain is. You just talked about something that takes advantage of blockchain technology without explaining what blockchain is.

Yeah, cause Covxy gave a basic description that fits the bill. So I went on to talk about why it was so important and why you need to take it seriously by going through what the bitcoin accomplished. Remember, the focus was on to explain to Covxy why the blockchain is so important in revolutionizing the financial world.

If you want a description of what a blockchain is, in the case of the bitcoin, each block contains all the transactions from when the last block was "mined" to be added to a chain of blocks each containing a list of transactions of certain time period that, together, would encompass the entire history of the network transactions.

In the context of mining, (this is actually pretty fun), what miners do run a Proof of Work consensus algorithm. First they look for a hash (string of random characters) that meets a specified condition, finding a certain amount of zeros that preface the string. The way they create these hashes to find the condition is encrypting an integer with the SHA-256 Algorithm. So if I encrypt the number 118 using the algorithm (literally just plug 118 in to the algorithm), out spits

00cc2e9f7a37a0fdf0fc99d8fa0c7ce8f7cae298854c8581886c66dc1776fd00

Oh and would you look at that? It has a couple zeros prefacing the rest of the hash. This is a miner would use as the header for a new block. Each block is completed when a new header is found and a brand spanking newly minted bitcoin (actually 6.25 of them) goes to the miner who found the header. And a new block is created for other miners to find a new header for. What's so cool about this is that each number has their own unique hash. So the miner can broadcast to the network that he found a new header using the integer he found, in this case, 118. And mind you, there are no repeats. Once 118 is used, other miners have to look for another number that satisfies the criteria when hashed. We call a number used for headers, a nonce. A number that satisfied the criteria, used once. This is the concept of mining in the BTC network.

One big issue is that you don't want people mining too quickly. The above time it took me to find 118 as an acceptable nonce took me 0.00051 seconds on my 2014 15 inch Macbook Pro. To rectify, network comes to a consensus to amp up the difficulty by making people find more zeroes prefacing the hash. The hash I just did only has 2 zeroes. If I were to look for 4 zeros prefacing the hash? Took ~0.25 seconds 6 zeroes? 22 seconds. 8 zeroes? The last time I ran this simulation, it took me a few hours. What this means is that increasing the number of zeroes increases the difficulty exponentially. This is why people need farms to mine bitcoin. Last time I checked, headers need to be prefaced with at least 19 zeroes.

The main purpose of all this is to incentivize honesty. Mining incentivizes people to work together and for the nodes who don't have the technical manpower to mine, they can still participate and broadcast the transactions made and nonces found and be paid for it through the network fees.

I encourage you all to read up on the BTC whitepaper. It's a work of art. Satoshi Nakamoto is an absolute genius.

Sad_Face I really hope you realize that none of that covered blockchain at all

Nani? The blockchain, its public ledger system is what makes the bitcoin network possible. The bitcoin network is an application of blockchain technology. What do you mean it doesn't cover blockchain at all? What didn't you guys understand?

I understand blockchain to be a decentralized and cryptographically secure record of interactions (typically transactions).

Good good good. I especially like that you said interactions, a broader term, as that's important for smart contracts. But allow me to explain its significance from the context of the bitcoin as the bitcoin network is the first major application thanks to using a blockchain (gonna skip over how it works I assume we've all heard it enough). But... again, we gotta compare it to the USD.

Thanks to the Nixon Shock in the 1960s, the US dollar was forced to go off the gold standard as other countries were demanding the US allow said countries trade in their US dollars (which was at the time, and still is used as the world reserve currency) for gold, which was pegged to $35 per ounce as per the agreement from the Bretton Woods system. The US at the time didn't have the gold reserves to back up the amount of US dollars in circulation and as such, either had to call off the dollar/gold ratio or devalue the dollar. They chose to the former. This was the precursor to the US setting up an agreement with Saudi Arabia to do oil trades using the US currency, the Petro dollar! Thus giving countries a reason to stock back up US dollars and the US dollar can maintain its status as the world reserve currency.

With this privilege, the US is has massive influence on the banking system where they can enforce embargos on countries and big banks where should a bank decide to business with a country like Iran, the US could get away with fining the bank with a several BILLION dollar fee. And they have no choice to pay it because if they want to do business in the banking world. The other privilege is that there's nothing stopping the Federal Reserve from printing out US dollars whenever they want and so they do just that. If they want $100, they print it out. If any other country wants $100, they better fork up $100 worth or goods and/or services. And Federal Reserve very well abused this privilege, much to the frustration and annoyance of the rest of the world and they've been putting in overtime thanks to the state of the economy damaged by Corona-chan.

Back to the Bitcoin. The bitcoin development was first started up in 2008 after the financial crash to be the first e-currency. What they set out to do and accomplished was to:

1) be decentralized
2) Have a limited supply of 21 million bitcoins that can ever exist (we are up to around 18 million at the moment in circulation)
3) Be borderless
4) Be permissionless

So what do these mean? The first is self-explanatory, you need to take control of 51% of the network of independent nodes that all have copies of every transaction of in the history of the network if you want to fudge a transaction. 2nd, again, compare this to the USD, we are getting close to 2 Trillion US dollars in circulation if we haven't crossed that mark already. More notes in circulation, the less valuable each note would individually be, hence inflation. The bitcoin is the opposite of that as with more usage in the network and less bitcoins mined, it'll go through deflation.

Now the last 2 are super SUPER interesting. Think about how you would open a bank account. You need to have your ID, a show proof of residency, and maybe a couple other documents. Then you get "permission" to open an account with X bank. If you make a transaction where your depositing over $10K, it gets flagged, if it's a $100K deposit, your account is definitely going to get frozen, the IRS is gonna roll up to your door and everyone's going to demand, how'd you get the money, what do you do for a living, etc etc etc. Suppose you want to send money to a relative outside the country. I live in the Caribbean and did a Moneygram to a relative further down the chain. Of $500, $20 went in Moneygram's pocket and it took a day to clear. If I had family in Venezuela, the government (back in 2018) would have taken a 30% cut since they were in desperate times thanks their currency collapse. If I wanted to do business with an embargoed country, that's not happening.

Now with the bitcoin. How do I get a bitcoin wallet

atomicwallet.io -> Just download a crypto wallet, boom, access to the network.

Anyone can deposit BTC into your wallet once they know your address. On top of that, guess how much it costs to do a transaction, CENTS. So every so often the crypto world gets alerts that some anonymous whale moved 10s of millions of dollars worth of BTC to a wallet. No one knows who sent it. No one knows who received it. And it costs FIFTY FUCKING CENTS. I dare you to try this in our current banking system to some dude in Cuba.

The bitcoin, after over 10 years of development, has successfully moved billions of dollars transactions without a hitch and without fail. This can be considered THE greatest investment of all time. So now every big name institution is investigating blockchain technology, countries from China to Venezuela to even the US and Russia are all investigating it as well, to create their own central bank digital currency.

Makes sense why the bitcoin is so significant? I implore you all to try out crypto, get a feel for how the tech works. Buy BTC, trade between wallets (and trade it for Link when you're done). This is goddamned revolutionary stuff. And I haven't gotten to the fun part yet (which I will have to get to later since I need to stop procrastinating on work).

Lmao. How exactly do you expect this particular technology to do all that? What is it you think that this thing actually does?

How? Short answer: SMART CONTRACTS

Long answer: First, tell me what you know about blockchain technology. I'm willing to answer your questions to the best of my ability, but I don't want to waste time doing this if you're just going scoff at it and no one is going to read it.
