#28. Kirby's Pinball Land (GB, 1993)

I have 4 Kirby games on my list, in 4 different genres. Kirby is the ultimate in flexible characters. He can be anything you want him to be. This time I want him to be a pinball. There is not a lot to this game really. 3 stages, a final boss and the same 4 songs OVER AND OVER AND OVER. But something about this game is just insanely fun. I can just sit down and play this for hours. Alongside Tetris, this game often got me all the way from Ottawa to Toronto on car rides or train rides in 1 life/game. If you know your timing in this dying is basically impossible. The soccer minigame is my absolute favorite part of the game, its so fun to ruin that squids life. Pokemon Pinball basically copied this formula 1 to 1 and is fine, but doesn't capture the same magic for me. Also I don't like pinball at all outside of this game. This is on 3DS Virtual Console I believe. Go get it!

Dishonorable Mention 3 (AKA the 3rd worst game of all time: Final Fantasy XII (PS2, 2006)

This was one of the first games I was hyped for in my FFXI days and was gonna pull me and my Linkshell friends away from the game for a week or two to play the new awesome FF game. Boy were we wrong. Within a day or two everyone was back on and taking a dump on this garbage. It plays like FFXI but offline, why would anyone want that!? The cast is easily the worst in FF history. I wonder if Zodiac Age fixed some of the problems, but the game is so bad I don't even know that it is worth it. As you can tell by now, games not living up to my hype is a huge part of being worst games ever.

#29. Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii, 2010)

I am typically not a fan of this style of combat, and I will say its honestly the worst part of Xenoblade, but there is so much wonder around it you forget the combat kinda sucks. The world is gigantic and beautiful. The music makes me feel the way 90s jRPG music made me feel. The characters are endearing while also being insanely cheesy. ITS REYN TIME! The entire start of the game it feels like the world is so alive and big, and then you get to Gaur Plains and realize this game is 100x bigger. I love just wandering around finding blue dots and seeing where I can explore. I'm really feeling it. The other games in the series didn't hit me the same. X and 2 were both whatever.

#30. Borderlands (PS3, 2009)

I don't like shooters really. So when this came out and my roommate would not shut up about it I was skeptical. For whatever reason I went against my usual rule of ignoring other people and picking games myself so I don't get burned. I am glad I got this. What a fun adventure, that at the time was hilariously unique and now has been copied constantly and all but ruined even by its own series. I only got to play this with people when it came out on PS4. Originally I played the game and the entire DLC solo. I was still lurking on B8 at the time so online gaming was not my jam yet. No randoms ever. EVER. The shooting feels good and responsive and while the guns aren't as unique as the game would like you to think, there are a ton of them so you can play a variety of ways. One thing this game did really well initially before patches and re-releases, was the sense that legendary items were actually special. I only found 2 I think. Maybe 3. Put that up against Borderlands 3 where I don't even understand why they have rarities on weapons. Enemies will drop 5 legendaries at a time and you will have an inventory overflowing with them in no time. I guess my point is, BL3 kinda sucked. It was fine to play with MSG, Wigs and Icon, but if not for them I would have quit ages ago.

#31. Final Fantasy 6 (SNES, 1994)

I first played this as part of FF Anthology. I think some of the impressiveness of the game is lost on my because I had already played stuff like Chrono Trigger and Mario RPG, so this didn't seem that huge. With hindsight now, FF6 is insanely bold in the stuff it tried. The game is massive and gorgeous. The music features some of the all time best FF songs like Terra's theme, Decisive Battle and of course the opera scene. The large cast does lead to a lot of whatever characters, but it was neat of them to not just say here are your 4 guys you can use and the rest die or leave and never come back.

#32. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS, 2011)

I might be the only person who loves this game of the people ranking here. I was always a 2D Mario > 3D Mario guy generally. So when this came out and played like Mario 3 but in 3D, I was in love immediately. This is one of the few games I actually played with 3D effects on. Those giant spikes man. Come right on me. The entire feel of this game reminded me of my childhood. That is a powerful feeling. Vibrant and magical. I don't know what else to say, it feels like a 2D Mario but it is 3D. The final boss is one of the best Mario stages ever.

#33. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN, 2001)

Formerly a top 10 game and top 20 game for me, this has fallen over time mostly due to new entries in the series coming out. Melee and 64 both still have value as they offer unique Smash experiences, while games like Brawl and U are pointless to ever revisit now that Ultimate is out. Anyway all that to say, Ultimate is still coming on my top 100, but the rest didn't make it because while I think they are top 100 games, they seemed redundant due to Ultimate and I didn't wanna waste spaces on Brawl/U/3DS. Melee is a game I played nearly daily for years. Right up until Brawl came out, Melee was part of the regular rotation. It crossed numerous friend groups. With the rise of moronic crap like no items and Fox only, I had to adapt how I play the game. I am traditionally a guy that loves the items in the game. They are how I learned to play and what I am best at. Playing against 3 Fox's all the time got really old as my normal main of Kirby. Enter Samus, I became a notorious Fox counter in my friend groups with my Samus game. The only trophy I didn't get in this was the have a Pikmin save one.

This game is still insanely crisp and manages to remain relevant even 20 years later.

#34. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (PS4, 2016)

Barely better, but the pinnacle of the series. Uncharted 4 does everything that 2 does but just slightly better. My main difference maker here is that this is the only game in the series I played the multiplayer at all. While the one mode is absolute trash. Fuck you pirate god asshole! The other modes I spent months playing with Wigs and Bartz and MSG and Icon and others. ONE DOES NOT CROSS GABRIEL ROMAN!!!!! The truck chase scene is one of the best parts of any game ever. It made me feel really good. Also this game has no supernatural crap bogging it down. Well except in the multiplayer....

#35. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3, 2009)

So as I said in my UC3 write up, I had waited to play this and the original til right before 3 and played them each in a week. UC1 was really cool and you could see the groundwork for something amazing. Enter UC2. Uncharted 2 is almost the perfect movie is a video game. All the stuff from the original where combat was kind of a drag was fixed. The game is still gorgeous 11 years later. The places you go are so beautiful and cool. Yes it has the stupid blue men that take 13000 bullets but its is pretty brief that you have to deal with moronic super natural stuff. Sully is the man. There is a severe lack of Gabriel Roman. Wigs does an excellent impression of Lazerevic.

#36. Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4, 2017)

I wait a year to play this for some reason. When I finally got around to it I was blown away. This game is gorgeous, this game is massive. The sense of scale is fantastic. The combat can be as simple or complex as you want it to be. The creatures offer so many unique experiences. You wanna stealth? Sure. Wanna be an all out attack monster? Sure. While the gameplay is insanely good, the graphics are top notch and the music/atmosphere is excellent. What really hooked me was the story. I was slow playing this, an hour here, an hour there. Then the story grabbed me and I played like 30 hours in a weekend. The backstory of this game is amazing. The world lore and detail on everything is so great. I love that stuff. I was so angry when the thing happens late in the game in a video log of something already well established. I knew it was going to happen, and it still was amazing. That was how good the story was. When you can get angry or sad over something that is very obvious, you have been drawn in. I am so beyond hyped for Horizon 2. It will be my get a PS5 game. Go read the Horizon story timeline sometime. They put so much random detail in there. Love this game. Play it. Random thing too, my best friend named his kid Aloy.

#37. Kirby Air Ride (GCN, 2003)

Where is my Kirby Air Ride 2?! I am a big Kirby guy so i picked this up right away despite it looking questionable. I am glad I did. It is Super Smash Bros Melee if it was a racing game. The unlock screen is very Smash. The main title screen is also very Smash. That Sakurai I tell ya. City Trial mode is endlessly replayable. The racing is very unique with the super simple controls. God I wish we got this with an online mode on Switch. I nearly finished all the challenges in this game. Was missing like 3 or 4.

#38. Tecmo Super Bowl (NES, 1991)

Like many, I only played this years later, and completely fell in love. This is the best football game there will ever be. I have played every modded roster version for the last decade. Done countless sims for B8 and run leagues. The stat tracking for an NES game is insane as well as rosters and everything else. Watching these games can lead to some hilarious antics too. The NES obviously has limitations so the odds of weird stuff happening is pretty high just by virtue of being programmed in there. Of course there is also the legend of Tom Tupa. The later versions of this game on SNES are great, but not on the same level as the original.

#39. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U, 2014)

I love Captain Toad. LOVE LOVE LOVE. What a perfect character, but it was not always this way. Way way back in 2007 I see this snappy looking Toad with an upbeat tune and think "Okay sure, its Toad and he has a headlamp, whatever. But then you did deeper. This isn't Toad, it is CAPTAIN TOAD, a completely unique Toad that is a Captain, he did not go to 14 years of naval academy to not be called Captain. You find out that Captain Toad has always been there, going all the way back to 1985 when we first see Toads. While most of them are hapless dopes barely able to protect the Princess. Captain Toad was out, exploring, opening new worlds for Mario. Yes all the warp pipes in all the Mario games, Captain Toad did that. Every cool item and new world? Captain Toad discovered them. He found the alien technology that allowed E Gadd to make the FLUDD. My point is Captain Toad is the single most important character in the Mario universe. He literally enables all of you to keep playing games.

It wasn't until Mario 3D World that we got to see HOW he does this, and let me tell you, it is with all the majesty of a roaring river, with the nobility of an erupting volcano and with the tepid warmth of a tree slightly taller than another tree nearby. The Captain Toad stages in Mario 3D World were an absolute delight. Look at this guy, he can't run, he can't jump, and yet he still allowed us all to play every Mario game. I wanted more. GIVE ME MORE. And so they did. Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is the pinnacle of puzzle solving. You may think the puzzles are super easy and just silly mindless fun. My god how wrong you are. Captain Toad is literally just so fucking brilliant that he makes it look easy.

HE FUCKING KILLS A DRAGON BY WADDLING AROUND!

If you tried these same puzzles with some scrub like Mario you might beat stage 1, but that's about it. Captain Toad is the only reason you can even comprehend throwing a turnip at a bird. His pickaxe is the single most powerful item in all of gaming. It bends space and time around it to smash things using a force equal to 12 black holes inside a blender!

Speaking of Smash Bros. I understand why we can't have Captain Toad in Smash. He would be too broken, no one would even have a chance. We would enter an era of ALL ITEMS MAX, CAPTAIN TOAD ONLY, NEW PORK CITY! In which 4 Captain Toads which cannot jump or run, slowly waddle at each other and unleash the pain! Matches would take hours even on 5 minute time limit, Captain Toad has no time for your time. His final smash of PICK AXE would end the universe as we know it.

As the war drums beat his theme and the trumpets blare you will bathe in the blood of your enemies. Forever knowing that you will

#40. Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, 2009)

Yeah I prefer 13 to 13-2. 13 > 13-2 > 13-3. A lot of people give this game a hard time for being a hallway sim, and fair enough a lot of areas are just hallways, but I would argue that while many other games don't specifically put you in hallways, they are the same thing. Old FF games may have a sprawling dungeon map, but at the end of the day you need to go A to B, there isn't another path, just dead ends with a treasure chest forcing more random battles which many people claim to hate(not me), Also while this is panned for being straight lines, everyone loves FFX and ... I mean look at those maps.... straight line hallways most of them. I think people will come around on this game later like they do with other games, seems take take around a decade to 15 years for people to accept things these days in long running series. Look out for FFXV love in 2030. I love the cast in this game. Hope is terrible, as I mentioned before, and remains so until 13-2, but the rest of the cast I at least like and in most cases really like. Lightning and Snow are just awesome, i love both of their characterizations.

#41. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3, 2011)

I think a lot of people played FF13, hated it and skipped the other 2 games. If that is the case they did themselves a major disservice. 13-2 is a polished and gorgeous game that handles time travel beautifully, features an excellent soundtrack and some of the coolest areas in FF games. Noel is a great character and Serah well... she is there too. One of the best things this game did was turn Hope from a garbage character to a great one. The monster capturing thing was cool too because who doesn't want to have a Tonberry friend? Caius is also one of my favorite FF villains. Better than almost all of them. I really wish they hadn't crapped the bed so hard on 13-3 closing out the trilogy. It's really not a very good game that I struggled through just to get closure and it then ended perfectly, only to immediately ruin all that with a post credit scene that actively makes all 3 games worse.
